  • In this study, the electromagnetic coupling through a narrow transverse slit in the upper wall of a parallel-plate waveguide(PPW) covered by a dielectric slab with a nearby conducting strip on the slab is considered. Two contrastive coupling phenomena, cavity-type and parasitic-type, observed in the geometry have been distinguished by differences in the resonant strip lengths and offset positions, induced strip current, radiation pattern, frequency bandwidth, and electromagnetic field distributions near the coupling slit.

  • The flow behavior of polymer melts within a slit die is an important consideration when designing a die geometry. The quality of the extruded polymer product can be determined through an evaluation of the flow homogeneity, wall shear rate and pressure drop across the central height of the die. However, mathematical formulations cannot fully determine the behavior of the flow due to the complex nature of fluid dynamics and the nonlinear physical properties of the polymer melts. This paper examines two slit die geometries in terms of outlet velocity uniformity, shear rate uniformity at the walls and pressure drop by using the licensed computational fluid dynamics package, Ansys POLYFLOW, based on the finite element method. The Carreau-Yasuda viscosity model was used for the rheological properties of the polypropylene. Comparative analysis of the simulation results will conclude that the modified die design performs better in all three aspects providing uniform exit velocity, uniform wall shear rates, and lower pressure drop.

  • The authors developed a new type of steel slit shear wall (SSSW) having the function of structural condition assessment through visually inspecting the out-of-plane deformation of the designed tapered links subjected to lateral deformation. To facilitate its practical application, this paper studies how to design dimensions of the tapered links. Two parameters, the width-to-thickness ratio of the tapered links and steel yield stress, were studied. The performance of structural condition assessment was affected by both parameters with the width-to-thickness ratio being the controlling one. Through both numerical and experimental study, the designed width-to-thickness ratio of tapered links for different levels of structural condition assessment was established considering the effect of different steel grades used. In practice, the dimensions of tapered links can be determined following the design equation provided. Finally, a design procedure for the proposed SSSW system is provided.

  • Recently, some attempts to construct slit caisson-type breakwaters are made in Korea. Since slit caisson-type breakwaters are suitable for relatively deep sea areas, a lot of theoretical and experimental researches have been performed. In this study, the reflection characteristics of vertical slit caisson breakwaters are investigated based on the measured data in two-dimensional hydraulic model tests with irregular waves. The experiments were conducted for various cases; variation of porosity of perforated-wall, width of wave chamber, number of slits for single-and double-chamber, respectively. It is found that in the case when the wave steepness (H/L$_{s}$ ) is small, the reflection coefficients are large. The existing researches have shown that the wave reflection is minimized when the nondimensional width of wave chamber B/L is about 0.2~0.25 for the regular waves. However, for the irregular waves the reflection is lowest when $B/L_2$, is 0.13~0.15. For a same porosity condition, the wave dissipation is stronger as the width of s1it is larger. The double-chamber caisson is superior to single- chamber caisson in the wave dissipating effects.

  • In this study, we present a mobile robot for ultrasonic scanning of weldment. magnetic Caterpillar mechanism is selected in order to travel on the inclined surface and vertical wall. A motion control board and motor driver are developed to control four DC-servo motors. A virtual device driver is also developed for the purpose of communicating between the control board and a host PC with Dual 'port ram. To provide the mobile robot with stable and accurate movement, PID control algorithm is applied to the mobile robot control. And a vision system for detecting the weld-line are developed with laser slit beam as a light source. In the experiments, movement of the mobile robot is tested inclined on a surface and a vertical wall.

  • Hydraulic experiments were carried out to investigate the reflection characteristics of perforated breakwaters in regular wave conditions varying the width of wave chamber and the shape of perforated wall. It was found that the reflection coefficient of the perforated breakwater was very sensitive to the change of wave chamber width. giving its minimal value when the width of the wave chamber is approximately 0.2 times the wave length in the wave chamber. This phenomenon may be resulted from the wave resonance inside the wave chamber. The reflection coefficients slightly varied for all shapes of perforated wall. i.e., vortical slit, horizontal slit or circular hole. However, the reflection trend of the structure was not significantly affected by the shape of the perforated wall.

  • Mathematical models have been developed to calculate hydrodynamic characteristics of perforated-wall structures. Most of the models separate the fluid regions into front and back of the wall, assume the solution in each region, and calculate the solution by using the matching condition at the wall. The matching condition involves the permeability parameter, which can be calculated by the methods proposed by Mei et al. or Sollitt and Cross. In this study, we compare these two methods. The former is advantageous because all the related variables are known, but it gives wrong result in the limit of long waves, i.e. zero transmission and perfect reflection of very long waves. In deep water, the latter predicts smaller transmission and larger reflection than the former, and vice versa in shallow water. In the latter method, the friction coefficient decreases as the wall thickness or the porosity of the wall increases.

  • This study investigates the wave pressure characteristics of the pile-supported breakwater with single or double perforated walls through 2-D hydraulic experiments and the measured wave pressures are compared to those of wave pressures by Goda's formula. For single chamber, the measured wave pressures in the front wall and rear wall decreased to about 25% and 30%, respectively, compared to those of wave pressures by Goda's formula. Also, the decrease in the wave pressures for double chamber were about 27%, 53%, and 64% in the front wall, middle wall, and rear wall, respectively. It was found that the pile-supported breakwater with double perforated walls was more efficient than the single chamber due to wave dissipation effects of double slit walls with horizontal slits.

  • The present study is aimed to improve the PIV performance by suggesting a two-frame particle identification technique and by introducing estimation method of wall pressure distribution from the velocity data. Adopted image processing system consists of one commercial image board slit into a personal computer, 2-D sheet light generator, flow picture recording apparatus and related particle identification software. A revised particle tracking method essential to PIV performance is obtained by particle centroid correlation pairing (CCP) and its effectiveness is ascertained by comparison with multi-frame identification.

  • This study introduces a newly developed PC non-bearing wall system to prevent the damage of RC wall-type apartments that have been heavily damaged by the 2017 Pohang Earthquake. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed PC non-bearing wall system, a static cyclic test is conducted. The prototype of test specimen is from the RC wall-type apartment which has been severely damaged by the 2017 Pohang Earthquake. The specimen with the conventional non-bearing wall system showed the similar damage of RC wall type apartment suffered from the Pohang Earthquake. In case of the specimen with the developed PC non-bearing wall system, cracks and damages were not transmitted between the walls due to the seismic slit and there were almost no cracks in the non-bearing walls. Therefore, the proposed non-bearing wall system, separated from the structural walls, could prevent spreading cracks to bearing walls and make it possible to effectively control damage due to earthquake loads.
