The aim of the present paper is to analyze the friction and mass flow in a rough microchannel using Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). The LBM is a kinetic method based on the particle distribution function, so it can be fruitfully used to study the flow dependence on Knudsen number including slip velocity, pressure drop in rough microchannel. The surface roughness elements are taken to be considered as a series of circular shaped riblets throughout the channel with relative roughness height up to a maximum 10% of the channel height. The friction coefficients in terms of Poiseuille number (Pn), mass flow rate and the flow behaviors have been discussed in order to study the effect of surface roughness in the slip flow regime at Knudsen number (Kn), ranging from 0.01 to 0.10. It is seen that the friction factor and the flow behaviors in a rough microchannel strongly depend on the rarefaction effect and the relative roughness height. The friction factor in a rough microchannel is higher than that in smooth channel but the mass flow rate is lower than that of smooth channel. Moreover, it is seen that the friction factor increased with relative roughness height but decreased with increasing the Kundsen number (Kn) whereas the mass flow rate is decreased with increasing both of surface roughness height and Knudsen number.
This paper introduces a pressure correction method for microflow computation. Conventional CFD methods with no slip boundary condition fail to predict the rarefaction effect of the wall when simulating gas microflows in the slip-flow regime. Pressure correction method with an appropriate slip boundary condition is an efficient tool in analyzing microscale flows. The present unstructured SIMPLE algorithm adopts both the classical Maxwell boundary condition and Langmuir boundary condition proposed by Myong. The simulation results of microchannel flows show that the proposed method has an effective predictive capability for microscale flows.
The present study deals with a numerical investigation of heat and mass transfer in a Sweeping Gas Membrane Distillation (SGMD) used for desalination. The governing equations expressing the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species with coupled boundary conditions were solved numerically. The slip boundary condition applied on the feed saline solution-hydrophobic membrane interface is taken into consideration showing its effects on profiles and process parameters. The numerical model was validated with available experimental data and was found to be in good agreement particularly when the slip condition is considered. The results of the simulations highlighted the effect of slip boundary condition on the velocity and temperature distributions as well as the process effectiveness. They showed in particular that as the slip length increases, the permeate flux of fresh water and process thermal efficiency rise.
The present paper addresses magnetohydrodynamic pulsating flow and heat transfer of two immiscible, incompressible, and conducting couple stress fluids between two permeable beds. The flow between the permeable beds is assumed to be governed by Stokes' [28] couple stress fluid flow equations, whereas the dynamics of permeable beds is determined by Darcy's law. In this study, matching conditions were used at the fluid-fluid interface, whereas the B-J slip boundary condition was employed at the fluid-porous interface. The governing equations were solved analytically, and the expressions for velocity, temperature, mass flux, skin friction, and rate of heat transfer were obtained. The analytical expressions were numerically evaluated, and the results are presented through graphs and tables.
Mass and flow resistance in a square ribbed microchannel have been studied numerically using the Lattice Boltzmann Method. It has been build up on two dimensional nine velocity vectors model with single relaxation time method called the Lattice Bhatnagor-Gross-Krook model. To analyze the roughness effect on the flow resistance namely the friction factor and mass flow has been discussed at the slip flow regime, $0.01{\leq}Kn{\leq}0.10$, where Kn is the Knudsen number. The wall roughness is considered by square microelements with a relative roughness height up to maximum 10% of channel height. The velocity profiles in terms of streamlines near the riblets are demonstrated to be responsible for the roughness effect. It is found that the roughness effect leads to increase the flow resistance with roughness height but it is decreased significantly with increasing the space between two roughness elements as well as the Knudsen number. In addition, the mass flow decreased linearly with increasing both roughness height and gap but significantly changed at the slip flow regime.
Numerical and experimental investigations are peformed for the rarefied gas flows in pumping channels of a helical-type drag pump. Modern turbomolecular pumps include a drag stage in the discharge side, operating roughly in $10^{-2}{\sim}10Torr$. The flow occurring in the pumping channel develops from the molecular transition to slip flow traveling downstream. Two different numerical methods are used in this analysis: the first one is a continuum approach in solving the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions, and the second one is a stochastic particle approach through the use of the direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method. The flow in a pumping channel is three-dimensional(3D), and the main difficulty in modeling a 3D case comes from the rotating frame of reference. Thus, trajectories of particles are no longer straight lines. In the Present DSMC method, trajectories of particles are calculated by integrating a system of differential equations including the Coriolis and centrifugal forces. Our study is the first instance to analyze the rarefied gas flows in rotating frame in the presence of noninertial effects.
This paper presents an experimental study on the performance of a micro-mixer using AC electro-osmotic flow. The microchannel is made of PDMS for the side and top walls and glass patterned with ITO for the bottom wall. We first investigated the effect of the applied potential as well as the frequency on the slip velocity. We have found that the slip velocity is roughly proportional to the applied voltage in line with the Helmholtz-Smoluchowski equation and there is an optimum frequency at which the slip velocity becomes maximized. To find the optimum parameters for mixing device we tested our device for various design parameters. It turned out that the best mixing effect is obtained approximately when the electrode angle is $30^{\circ}$, electrode width $200\;{\mu}m$, and the frequency of power supply 700 Hz.

In the very low specific speed range ($n_s=0.24$ < 0.25, non-dimensional), the efficiency of centrifugal pump designed by a conventional method is very low in common. Therefore, positive-displacement pumps have long been used widely. Recently, since the centrifugal pumps are becoming higher in rotational speed and smaller in size, there expects to develop a new centrifugal pump with a high performance to replace the positive-displacement pumps. The purpose of this study is to investigate the internal flow characteristics of a very low specific speed centrifugal pump and to examine the effect of internal flow pattern on pump performance. The results show that the theoretical head definition of semi-open impeller should be revised by the consideration of high slip factor in the semi-open impeller, and the leakage flow through the tip clearance results in a large effect on the impeller internal flow. Strong reverse flow at the outlet of semi-open impeller reduces the absolute tangential velocity considerably, and the decreased absolute tangential velocity increasese the slip factor with the reduction of theoretical head.

A slip factor is defined as an empirical factor, which should be multiplied to theoretical energy transfer to estimate real work input of a centrifugal compressor. During the last century, researchers have tried to develop simple empirical models to predict the slip factor. However most of these models have been developed based only on design point data. Furthermore flow is assumed inviscid. As a result, these models often fail to predict the correct slip factor at off-design condition. In this study, various models for the slip factor were analysed and compared with experimental and numerical data at off-design conditions. As a result of this study, Wiesner's and Paeng and Chung's models are shown to be applicable for radial impeller, but all the models are found to be inappropriate for backswept impellers.
This paper presents the slip behavior of composite fabrics by high speed resin flow in high pressure resin transfer molding. In order to observe the fiber deformation behavior, we constructed the measuring equipment for friction coefficient between fiber and mold, and the monitoring system for deformation of fiber preform in high-pressure RTM process. Coulomb friction coefficient and hydrodynamic friction coefficient between fiber preform and mold were measured and the external force induced by fluid flow causing the deformation of fiber preform was measured. Friction force calculated by friction coefficient and the external force upon fiber deformation were compared, which showed that preform deformation occurred when the external force was bigger than the friction force. The slip behavior of the fiber preform was mainly influenced by the volume fraction of fiber preform and the friction coefficient.
