  • The behavior of a hemisphere-cylinder flight vehicle at high angles of attack and side slip angles have been studied. $0^{\circ}{\sim}35^{\circ}$ angles of attack and $0^{\circ}{\sim}5^{\circ}$ side slip angles were selected as fright conditions at Mach No. 0.3. Flow changes from low angles of attack to high angles of attack were compared and analyzed. We changed from low to high angles of attack with small side slip angles. We compared normal, side and axial force coefficients among various test cases.

  • It has been known from Willoughby's empirical equation that rating cone index can be determined if wheel sinkage and slip of a vehicle can be measured on soil surface. A field data of wheel sinkage and slip was collected from two tractors of different sizes on gravelly sand and gravelly loamy sand. Using the data, rating cone index of the soil was estimated. The estimated rating cone index demonstrated that it could be determined in real time by measuring wheel sinkage and slip. It was also demonstrated statistically that the same soil strength could be obtained under the same soil conditions regardless of the vehicle platforms used for the wheel sinkage and slip measurements.

  • The fluid mechanics and operating conditions of gas-lubricated proceeding bearings in micro rotating machinery such as micro polarization modulator and micro gas turbine are different from their larger size ones. Due to non-continuum effects, there is a slip of gas at the walls. Thus in this paper, the slip flow effect is considered to estimate the pressure distribution and load-carrying capacity of micro gas-lubricated proceeding bearings as the local Knudsen number at the minimum film thickness is greater than 0.01. Based on the compressible Reynolds equation with slip flow, the static characteristics of micro gas-lubricated proceeding bearings are obtained. Numerical predictions compare the pressure distribution and load capacity considering slip flow with the performance of micro proceeding bearings without slip f]ow for a range of bearing numbers and eccentricities. The results clearly show that the slip flow effect on the static characteristics is considerable and becomes more significant as temperature increases.

  • In this paper, a 4-wheel vehicle model including the effects of tire slip was considered, along with variable parameter sliding control, pushrod force as the end control parameter, and an antilock sliding control, in order to improve the performance of the vehicle longitudinal response. The variable sliding parameter is made to be proportional to the square root of the pressure derivative at the wheel, in order to compensate for large pressure changes in the brake cylinder. A typical tire force-relative slip curve for dry road conditions was used to generate an analytical tire force-relative slip function, and an antilock sliding control process based on the analytical tire force-relative slip function was used. A retrofitted brake system, with the pushrod force as the end control parameter, was employed, and an average decay function was used to suppress the simulation oscillations. Simulation results indicate that the velocity and spacing errors were slightly larger than the results that without considering wheel slip effect, the spacing errors of the lead and follower were insensitive to the adhesion coefficient up to the critical wheel slip value, and the limit for the antilock control on non-constant adhesion road condition was determined by the minimum of the equivalent adhesion coefficient.

  • The wheel slip control systems are able to control the braking force more accurately and can be adapted to different vehicles more easily than conventional braking control systems. In order to achieve the superior braking performance through the wheel slip control, real-time information such as the tire braking force at each wheel is required. In addition, the optimal target slip values need to be determined depending on the braking objectives such as minimum braking distance, stability enhancement, etc. In this paper, a wheel slip control system is developed for maintaining the vehicle stability based on the braking monitor, wheel slip controller and optimal target slip assignment algorithm. The braking monitor estimates the tire braking force, lateral tire force and brake disk-pad friction coefficient utilizing the extended Kalman filter. The wheel slip controller is designed based on the sliding mode control method. The target slip assignment algorithm is proposed to maintain the vehicle stability based on the direct yaw moment controller and fuzzy logic. The performance of the proposed wheel slip control system is verified in simulations and demonstrates the effectiveness of the wheel slip control in various road conditions.

  • The transfer of forces across the interface by bond between concrete and steel is of fundamental importance to many aspects of reinforced concrete behavior. Bond stress - slip relationships were studied using a symmetrical tension test specimen. This type of test is intented to simulate conditions in the tension zone of a concrete beam between primary cracks and below the neutral axis. These relationships between local bond stress and local slip are quite different at different locations along the bar. The present study allows more accurate analysis of reinforced concrete structures by employing more realistic bond stress-slip relations.

  • In order to ensure the high-integrity of reference stations of satellite navigation system, cycle slip should be precisely monitored and compensated. In this paper, we proposed a cycle slip algorithm for the integrity monitoring of the reference stations. Unlike the legacy method using the Melbourne-Wübbena (MW) combination and ionosphere combination, the proposed algorithm is based on ionosphere combination only, which uses high precision carrier phase observations without pseudorange observations. Two independent and complementary ionosphere combinations, Ionospheric Negative (IN) and Ionospheric Positive (IP), were adopted to avoid insensitive cycle slip pairs. In addition, a second-order time difference was applied to the IN and IP combinations to minimize the influence of ionospheric and tropospheric delay even under severe atmosphere conditions. Then, the cycle slip was detected by the thresholds determined based on error propagation rules, and the cycle slip was identified through weighted least square method. The performance of the proposed cycle slip algorithm was validated with the 1 Hz dual-frequency carrier phase data collected under the difference levels of ionospheric activities. For this experiment, 15 insensitive cycle slip pairs were intentionally inserted into the raw carrier phase observations, which is difficult to be detected with the traditional cycle slip approach. The results indicate that the proposed approach can successfully detect and compensate all of the inserted cycle slip pairs regardless of ionospheric activity. As a consequence, the proposed cycle slip algorithm is confirmed to be suitable for the reference station where real time high-integrity monitoring is crucial.

  • In this study, a finite element model based on the SU/PG scheme was developed to solve shallow-water equations and the influences of parameters and internal boundary conditions on depth-averaged flow behavior were investigated. To analyze the effect of roughness coefficient and eddy viscosity on flow characteristics, the developed model was applied to rectangular meandering channel with two bends, and transverse velocities and water depth distributions were examined. As the roughness coefficient adjacent to wall increased, the velocities near the wall decreased, and the reduced velocities were compensated by the expanding mid-channel velocities. In addition, the flow characteristics around a circular cylinder were analyzed by varying the internal boundary conditions as free slip and no slip. The assignment of slip condition changed the velocity distribution on the cylinder surface and reduced the magnitude of the shear stress up to one third.

  • The lattice Boltzmann (LB) method has been used to simulate rarefied gas flows in a micro-system as an alternative tool. However, previous results were mainly focused on a simple geometry with flat walls because the LB method is modeled on uniform Cartesian lattices. When previous boundary conditions for the microflows are applied to curved walls, the use of them requires approximation of the curved boundary by a series of stair steps, and introduces additional errors. For macroflows, no-slip curved wall boundary treatments have been developed remarkably in order to overcome these limits. However, the investigations for the slip curved wall boundary have rarely been performed for microflows. In this work, a curved boundary treatment of the LB method for a slip flow has been introduced. The results of the LB method for 2D microchannel and 3D microtube flows are in excellent agreement with the analytical solutions.

  • This paper introduces a pressure correction method for microflow computation. Conventional CFD methods with no slip boundary condition fail to predict the rarefaction effect of the wall when simulating gas microflows in the slip-flow regime. Pressure correction method with an appropriate slip boundary condition is an efficient tool in analyzing microscale flows. The present unstructured SIMPLE algorithm adopts both the classical Maxwell boundary condition and Langmuir boundary condition proposed by Myong. The simulation results of microchannel flows show that the proposed method has an effective predictive capability for microscale flows.
