  • Talocalcaneal coalition known as the most common tarsal coalition is a congenital failure of segmentation. Talocalcaneal coalition with complete bone bridge is very rare, and there are few references in the literature about the clinical results and the operative method for this type of tarsal coalition. We report a case of 15 years old female with complete talocalcaneal coalition, who showed good clinical results by lateral sliding calcaneal osteotomy.

  • Dynamic responses of a multi-span simply supported bridge are investigated to examine the effect of bearing damage under seismic excitations. The damaged bearings are modeled as sliding elements with friction between the superstructure and the top of the pier. Various values of the friction coefficients are examined to figure out the effect of damaged bearings with various levels of peak ground accelerations. It is found that the global seismic behaviors are significantly influenced by the occurrence of bearing damage. It should be noticed that the most possible location of unseating failure of superstructures differs from that in the bridge model without considering the bearing damage. It can be concluded that the bearing damage may play the major role in the unseating failure of a bridge system, so that the damage of bearings should be included to achieve more rational seismic safety evaluation.

  • The failures of the agricultural reservoirs that most have more than 50 years, have increased due to the abnormal weather and localized heavy rains. There are many studies on the prediction of damage from reservoir collapse, however, these referenced studies focused on evaluating reservoir collapse as single unit and applyed to one and two dimensional hydrodynamic model to identify the fluid flow. This study is to estimate failure probability of spillway, sliding, bearing capacity and overflowing targeting small and medium scale agricultural reservoirs. In addition, we calculate failure probability by complex mode. Moreover, we predict downstream flood damage by reservoir failure applying three dimensional hydrodynamic model. When the reservoir destroyed, the results are as follows; (1) the flow of fluid proceeds to same stream direction and to a lower slope by potential and kinetic energy; (2) The predicted damage in downstream is evaluated that damage due to building destruction is the highest.

  • It is very important to determine a target probability of failure in reliability based design such as an allowable factor of safety in working stress design because they are indices to judge the stability of structures. We have carried out reliability analyses of nationwide gravity type quay walls and found that sliding and foundation failures of quay walls were dominant failure modes for every case of loads. And a target probability of failure for bearing capacity of foundation of quay wall was also determined in this study. Of several approaches which have been suggested until now, a couple of reasonable approaches were used. Firstly, in order to consider the safety margin of structures which have been executed so far, the reliability levels of existing structures were assessed. And then a mean probability of failure for the quay walls was estimated. In addition, life cycle cost(LCC) analyses for representative structures were performed. Probabilities of failure for several quay walls were calculated with changing the width of each quay wall section. LCC of quay wall which is requiring case by case during the service life was evaluated, and also the optimum probability of failure of quay wall which minimizes LCC was found. Finally, reasonable target probabilities of failure were suggested by comparing with mean probability of failure of existing structures.

  • A set of tests were accomplished in order to get better insight of the basic material properties of masonry made of normal concrete brick and different type of mortar compositions. Three different types of test were performed. Masonry unit and prism were tested by compressive strength test, Masonry wallets were tested by compressive strength test. Masonry wallets were tested in diagonally under tension. A significant influence of different mortar compositions on compression strength of masonry prism was observed, The tests have shown that for diagonal compression three different mode of failure were possible : tension crack along the loaded diagonal sliding along a mortar joint and combined sliding and diagonal crack according to the adhesive strength of a mortar.

  • Many types of door system are used in the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU). The door system is categorized to the two types of door system, sliding door and plug door. The sliding door is widely used in the EMU but has weak point for the noise problem. The plug door has advantages for the noise reduction characteristic. Nowaday electric door system is widely used and motor is a main part of driving system in the door system. We have to know the exact driving position of door system to control proper operation of the door. Actually encoder or tachometer is used for the position controlling, but it makes price increase and failure increase. In this paper, we study and describe motor current calculation method to contol and know exact driving position of door system.

  • In lateral ground flow, slope stability, and land slide problems, H-piles have been often used for a horizontally deforming ground to prevent the failure of mass of soil in a downward and outward movement of a slope. Here, Theoretical equations are derived to estimate the lateral force, assuming that the Mohr-coulomb's Plastic states occures in the ground just around H-piles. In this study, the mechanism of lateral force acting on passive pile that is in a row, situated in the ground undergoing plastic deformation was discussed, and its theoretical analysis was carried out considering the interval between H-piles. The solution of the theoretical equation derived from here showed resonable characteristic for constants of soil as well as for the interval, widths, and heights of H-pile.

  • Maximum allowable PV values of oilless composite bearing materials (70% epoxy-resin/30% Graphite) were measured and compared at various types of test rigs that have different contact geometry and the operating conditions. Test results showed that material failure was mainly characterized by the sharp increase in both coefficient of friction and surface temperature, and different PV values were measured under different Contact geometry. The discrepancy in measurement of PV values was analyzed in the light of theoretical frictional heating analysis. Results show that surface temperature rise depends on its contact geometry, and PV values could be overestimated in the testing conditions of high sliding velocity. Test data of different contact geometry were normalized by using a normalized contact pressure and sliding velocity; it showed a good correlation. This work suggests that normalized PV values could be more effective in evaluating bearing materials than conventional PV values for a design parameter of journal bearings.

  • In lateral ground flow, slope stability, and land slide problems, H-piles have often been used, on a horizontally deforming ground, to prevent the failure of mass of soil in a downward and outward movement of a slope. Here, theoretical equations are derived to estimate the lateral force, assuming that the Mohr-Coulomb's plastic states occur in the ground, just around H-piles. In this study, some model experiments were performed to check the lateral forces determined from theoretical equations, using several pile widths, heights and various interval ratios between H-piles for sand specimens. The solution of the theoretical equation, derived from previous studies, showed reasonable characteristics for constants of soil, as well as for the interval, widths, and heights of H-Pile.

  • The FPCB is used as the important component of the sliding mechanism of mobile phones. FPCB have been used as jumper cables(fixed wiring) in various types of circuits because of their flexibility and bending property. The dominant failure mode of the FPCB is open that was caused by fatigue. The fatigue is repeated whenever the sliding is open, so it is a mainly cause of FPCB fatigue. We examined the bending-fatigue lifetime of FPCB. we focused on observing the contact resistance degradation of FPCB of mobile phones according to different test condition of bending strain. As a result, it has proved that lifetime decreased by increasing bending strain.
