Semi-submersible drilling rigs are offshore plants that perform functions such as ocean exploration for oil and gas acquisition, drilling and production, and storage and unloading of crude oil and gas. Semi-submersible drilling rigs use watertight dampers as emergency buoyancy holders. Since the watertight damper is an emergency shutoff device, it is mainly driven by a pneumatic driving system that can operate without a power supply. The pneumatic driving system has highly non-linear characteristics due to compressibility of air and external disturbance such as static and Coulomb friction. In this paper, a new control algorithm is proposed for a watertight damper driving system based on the sliding mode control with a disturbance observer. To evaluate control performance and robust stability of the designed controller, the control results were compared with the results obtained using the state feedback controller. As a result, it was confirmed that the pneumatic driving system for driving the watertight damper using the sliding mode controller with a disturbance observer can obtain excellent control performance against the parameter changes and the disturbance input.
Air supply is required to the cathode of fuel cells for the provision of oxygen to produce electricity through chemical reaction with hydrogen in the cell, and supplied air should be free of impurities such as oil mist and tiny particles separated from sliding surfaces. Hence, air compressor for fuel cell air supply must be oil-less type and have no severe sliding surfaces inside. This paper introduces the concept of single-vane type rotary air compressor whose structure is particularly suitable for the fuel cell application: sliding action of the vane against the cylinder wall, which causes severe friction in the conventional vane rotary compressors, is made to be prevented by attaching the vane to the driving shaft with the compliant device between the vane and the rotor in this new design. For 2 kW fuel cell application, preliminary design has been carried out, and its performance has been estimated by using computer simulation program: for discharge pressure of 2 bar, the volumetric, adiabatic, and mechanical efficiencies are calculated to be 82.5%, 92.5%, and 96.3%, respectively.
One of the critical issues in a sensor network concerns the detection of changes in data streams. Recently presented change detection schemes primarily use a sliding window model to detect changes. In such a model, a distance function is used to compare two sliding windows. Therefore, the performance of the change detection scheme is greatly influenced by the distance function. With regard to sensor nodes, however, energy consumption constitutes a critical design concern because the change detection scheme is implemented in a sensor node, which is a small battery-powered device. In this paper, we present a comparative study of various distance functions in terms of execution time, energy consumption, and detecting accuracy through simulation of speech signal data. The simulation result demonstrates that the Euclidean distance function has the highest performance while consuming a low amount of power. We believe our work is the first attempt to undertake a comparative study of distance functions in terms of execution time, energy consumption, and accuracy detection.

In this research, a new type of haptic master device using electrorheological(ER) fluid for minimally invasive surgery(MIS) is devised and control performance of the proposed haptic master is evaluated. The proposed haptic master consists of ER bi-directional clutch/brake for 2 DOF rotational motion(X, Y) using gimbal structure and ER brake on the gripper for 1 DOF rotational motion (Z). Using Bingham characteristic of ER fluid and geometrical constraints, principal design variables of the haptic master are determined. Then, the generation of torque of the proposed master is experimentally evaluated as a function of applied field of voltage. A sliding mode controller which is robust to uncertainties is then designed and empirically realized. It has been demonstrated via experiment that the proposed haptic master associated with the controller can be effectively applied to MIS in real field conditions.

To obtain a robustness which is one of important characteristics needed in servo drive, the sliding mode control method is used as a control strategy. However, the undesired phenomenon of chattering is a serious problem. In this paper, an adaptive chattering alleviation algorithm for variable structure system control is proposed to solve this serious problem. Digital controller using the theory of chattering alleviation control is applied to the position control problem of an induction motor system. Comparisons of this algorithm with other variable structure system control algorithms indicate that the chattering can be alleviated. This controller is implemented using IBM-PC(8088 CPU) which controls current controlled PWM inverter consisted of IGBT as a switching device to drive motor.
This paper was undertaken to recognize the pattern of the wear debris by neural network as a link for the development of diagnosis system for movable condition of the lubricated machine surface. The wear test was carried out under different experimental conditions using the wear test device was made in laboratory and wear testing specimen of the pin-on-disk type were rubbed in paraffine series base oil, by varying applied load, sliding distance and mating material. The neural network has been used to pattern recognition of four parameter (diameter, elongation, complex and contrast) of the wear debris and learned the friction condition of five values (material 3, applied load 1, sliding distance 1). The three kinds of the wear debris had a different pattern characteristic and recognized the friction condition and materials very well by the neural network. The characteristic parameter of the large wear debris over a few micron size enlarged recognition ability.

This paper was undertaken to do shape analysis of wear debris on oiliness agent and extreme pressure agent. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the wear test device was made in our laboratory and were- specimens of the pin on disk type was rubbed in paraffine series base oil by materials, varying applied load, sliding distance, oil additives such as stearine acid, DBDS, TCP. The four shape parameters (50% volumetric diameter, aspect, roundness and reflectivity) on a kind of the additives are different on applied load and sliding distance and Its are affected by absorbed film and reaction film. DBDS and TCP have a role of extreme pressure agent but a role of absorbed film of stearic acid decrease in high load. The maximum wear volume on applied load be in existence in three kinds of the specimens because of reaction characteristics of the additives.
Recently, study on the weak interaction energy between the soft polymer surface and liquid crystals has been a primary topic for new LC device applications. In this paper, to understand the switching property of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) at the interface with a weak anchoring boundary, we investigate experimentally the rotation property of surface nematic director by electric field on non-treated Poly-Methylmethacrylate (PMMA, $T_g=110^{\circ}C$, Sigma Aldrich) film observed under various temperatures including the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of the polymer layer.

This study was undertaken to investigate tribology characteristics of the alumina ceramics($Al_2O_3$) of the various purity for the variation of ambient condition such as air and vacuum. The wear test was carried out under different experimental condition using the wear test device, which was designed for this study, and in which the annular surface of wear testing specimens as well as mate specimen made of STB2 steel, were subjected to sliding speed, applied load and the sliding distance. The results obtained were as follows. As the ambient pressure decreases, the friction coefficient increases because the protective layer made of absorption due to decrease of the amount of ambient gas can not be formed. As the friction coefficient paticularly for 85% alumina lower than 95% and 99.7% in the alumina purity increases by an influence of heat accumulation caused by small elastic modulus and thermal conductivity. The friction surface of ceramics can be protected in the air by the influence of the oxides transfered from STB2. However, in the vacuum, the protective layer made of the absorption substance can not be formed due to the decrease of ambient gas.

Surface hardening of plain carbon steel (SM$%C) by Laser are usually much finer and stronger than those of the base metals. The present study was undertaken to investigate the wear resistance and a processing parameters such as, power density, pulse width, defocusing distance, and molten depth for surface modification of plain carbon steel. The wear test was carried out under experimental condition using the wear test device, and in which the annular surfaces of wear test specimens as well as mating specimen of alumina ceramics(Al2O3) was rubbed in dry sliding condition. It is shown that molten depth and width depend on defocusing distance. The wear loss on variation of sliding speed was much in lower speed range below 0.2m/sec and in higher speed range above 0.7m/sec, but wear loss was little in intermediate speed range. It depends on oxidation speed and wear speed.
