In many practical lubricated contacts such as a rough concentrated contact on the sliding of nominally flat surfaces, the fluid may be of molecular (nanometer) scale owing to the asperity interactions on the surfaces. Under this condition, there is insufficient lubricant on the concentrated contact spot to maintain a realistic continuum. Rheological behavior for this kind of concentrated contact has been studied extensively to know whether the application of viscous fluid model is appropriate. The interaction of two rough surfaces is simplified as perfectly flat-rough surfaces contact under certain conditions by "composite topography" and for a nanometer scale fluid film, three kinds of rheological fluid behavior are analyzed in elastohydrodynamic asperity point contact.t contact.
Sputtering parameters such as N$_{2}$ flow percentage and bias voltage in reactive TiN film deposition by RF magnetron sputtering system were selected to investigate the effects of sputtering deposition conditions on tribological characteristics of TiN films. Wear scar of the steel ball damaged by TiN films was measured by SEM to understand wear behavior of deposited TiN films. Crystallization and induced strain of TiN were detected by XRD. Wear mode changed from plastic to brittle with increasing N$_{2}$ ratio. Wear scar by sliding with TiN film deposited at around 27% N$_{2}$ ratio was maximum. The results indicate that bias voltage affects tribological behavior by formation of high density film and internal stress.
Understanding steel/skin contact phenomena is important for the study of object manipulation in robotics and has been a topic of great interest. In this study, pig skin was taken as a surrogate model for human skin, and its adhesive, friction, and deformation behaviors were measured under various exposure times to air. Indentation, friction, and scratch tests were performed at $25^{\circ}C$ and 45% relative humidity. The influences of adhesion and deformation on the coefficient of friction were characterized; the pig skin was found to be sensitive to the sliding velocity and normal load under the controlled experimental conditions.

A two-dimensional Euler code based on flux vector splitting scheme has been developed to simulate the behavior of supersonic shock wave over the cylinder. AF+ADI scheme was used for time integration. The sliding multiblock technique was implemented to handle the relative motion of the moving cylinder and the stationary tunnel. The code is validated with a problem of subsonic flow around a Naca-0012 airfoil. The Computation results show complex phenomena of the propagation of shock waves and the reflection as expansion wave at tunnel exit.

An attempt is made to predict the wear behavior of ion-nitrided metal, when wear arises from asperity interactions. The analysis demonstrates that wear mechanisms are not inconsistent with observed behavior, indicates and approaches to a better appreciation of the effects of such factors as nitrided layer formation and surface topographical features. It was found on ion-nitriding that penetration rate and case development are faster and wear properties of the final product are more improved than conventional gas and salt-bath methods of nitriding.

Thermal deformation of cast iron exhaust manifold for turbo diesel engine is investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). The FE model included the temperature dependent material properties as well as the interactions between exhaust manifold, cylinder head and fasteners. It also considers the sliding behavior of the flanges of exhaust manifold on cylinder head when either expansion or contraction of the exhaust manifold exceeds the fastener pretension. The result of analysis revealed that remarkable thermal deformation along the longitudinal direction. Compressive plastic deformation at high temperature remained tensile stress in manifold and resulted in longitudinal contraction at ambient temperature. The amount of contraction at each fastener position was predicted and compared with experimental results. Analysis results revealed that the model predicted deformation qualitatively, but more elaborated cyclic hardening behavior would be necessary to predict the deformation quantitatively.

Using the modified DEM (Discrete Element Method), which we proposed in order to improve the accuracy of the simulation, soil behavior and reaction by lugs of rotating wheel and a soil cutting process by a high speed blade were calculated and compared with experimental data. The DEM is one of computational mechanics, where the object body is supposed as an assembly of small particles called elements and not a continuum as in the case of FEM. We can easily treat some discrete phenomena such as cracking, separating and sliding by the DEM. We had to modify the original mechanical model, which induced too free movement of elements, adding a tension spring, which would display the role of soil adhesion. The results of DEM simulations were successful from both the soil behavior and reaction points of view.

An experimental study was performed to discover the effect of environment on the tribological behavior of Si-incorporated diamond-like carbon(Si-DLC) film slid on a steel ball. The films were deposited on Si(100) wafers from radio-frequency glow discharge of mixtures of benzene and dilute silane gases. Experiments using a ball-on-disk test-rig was performed under vacuum, dry air and ambient air conditions. It was observed that coefficient of friction was decreased as the environmental condition changes from vacuum, to dry air. It was also observed that the coefficient of friction decreased with increasing silicon concentration in the film. Chemical analyses of debris suggested that the low and stable friction coefficient is closely related to the silicon rich oxide debris and the rolling action.
The effect of silver particle introduction on the rolling friction of AISI 52100 steel pairs has been investigated. Experiments ware performed in dry conditions using a thrust bearing-type rolling test rig at a load range of 12-960 N and a sliding velocity range of 8-785 mm/sec with pure (99.99%) silver particles. Results showed that introduced silver particles formed transfer layers, which protected the virgin bearing surfaces and resulted in the low lolling friction. By changing the quantity of silver particles, transitions in the rolling friction were found. Results also showed that the variations in normal load and rolling speed also affected the rolling friction behavior. Analyses of SEM and EPMA showed that the formation the transfer layer was mainly governed by the silver particle quantity, normal load and rolling speed, and this resulted in the different behavior of rolling friction. In this study, it was found that the low and stable rolling friction was resulted from the, shakedown phenomena occurred at the silver transfer layer.
