  • In recent years, the micro-tribological behavior of silicon has been the topic of much interest. peformance of thin film under light load is important for potential applications in MEMS. In this work under light load and various humidity, the tribological behavior of undulated surface with various width and shape was Investigated. The results show that undulated surface of linear type had good tribological properties abrasive wear occur depending on the sliding condition. Also the effect of humidity on friction and wear was not important if exist undulation. Finally, undulations on HDD were found to be effective in trapping wear particles.

  • Tribological phenomena such as wear or transfer are influenced by various factors and have complicated behavior. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the behavior of the gribological phenomena because of their complexity. But, those tribological phenomena can be considered simply as to transfer micro material particles from the sliding interface. Then, we proposed the numerical simulation method for tribological phenomena such as wear of transfer using stochastic process models. This numerical simulation shows the change of the 3-D surface topography. In this numerical simulation, initial 3-D surface toughness data are generated by the method of non-causal 2-D AR (autoregressive) model. Processes of wear and transfer for some generated initial 3-D surface data are simulated. Simulation results show successfully the change of the 3-D surface topography.

  • The behavior of abrasive wear on counterpart roughness of glass fiber reinforcement polyurethane resin (GF/PUR) composites were investigated at ambient temperature by pin-on-disc friction test. The friction coefficient, cumulative wear volume and surface roughness of these materials against SiC abrasive paper were determined experimentally. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, ploughing, delamination, deformation of resin and cracking by scanning electric microscopy (SEM) photograph of the tested surface. As increasing the counterpart roughness the GF/PUR composites indicated higher friction coefficient. The surface roughness of the GF/PUR composites was increased as the sliding velocity was higher and the counterpart roughness was rougher in wear test.

  • This paper is to investigate the wear behavior of submerged-arc clad materials by the wear test with a ball-on-disk type wear testing machine in air. The specimens were clad with Stoody105 alloy wire on a carbon steel (SM45C) substrate by submerged-arc cladding process under different welding parameters. The wear behavior of the cladding through ball-en-disk test has been studied under the wear load from 5N to 16N and sliding speed from 8cm/s to 35cm/s. The weight of the specimen loss was measured. Scanning electron micrographs of the worn surface show a layer of oxide film formed on the worn surface. Oxidation wear mechanism controls the wear process. The spalling of the oxide is caused by the repeated rubbing fatigue mechanism.

  • Rapid increase of refrigeration & air-conditioning system (r & a system) in modem industries brings attention to the urgency of research & development as a core technology in the area. And it is required to the compatibility problem of r & a system to alternative refrigerant for the protection of environment. Then, it is requested to study the lubrication characteristics of refrigerant compressor which is the core technology in the r & a system. The study of lubrication characteristics in the critical sliding component is essential for the design of refrigerant compressor. Therefore, theoretical investigation of the lubrication characteristics of rotary compressor for r & a system is studied. The Runge-Kutta method is used for the analysis of the behavior of rolling piston in the rotary compressor. The results show that the rotating speed of shaft and the discharge pressure have an important effect upon the angular velocity of the rolling piston. This results give important basic data for the further lubrication analysis and design of the rotary compressor.

  • Shaking table tests to investigate the dynamic friction behavior of interfaces between dense dry granular soils and construction material(concrete) were performed and the results are reported. The results show the variation of dynamic interface friction coefficients between dense dry granular soils and construction material was small in the sliding velocity range employed in this study. It was also observed that dynamic interface friction coefficients decreased as mean grain sizes of granular soils increased. These coefficients were compared with the friction coefficients obtained from the peak internal friction angles of the same granular soils by plane strain compression tests.

  • The effect of interlamellar spacing on tensile behavior and fracture mode at high temperatures has been studied for unidirectionally solidified $Al-CuAl_2$ eutectic composite. The tensile properties at room temperature in $Al-CuAl_2$ eutectic composite improved as the interlamellar spacing decreased due to the constraint effects of closely spaced lamellae, while the opposite behavior was observed at high temperatures due to the annihilation of the constraint effects by phase boundary sliding. The $Al-CuAl_2$ eutectic composite exhibited brittle fracture mode below the temperature at which the reinforcing phase softened but ductile fracture mode above the temperature.

In this work under light load and low speed, the tribological behavior of coated silicon was investigated. The results show that both adhesive and abrasive wear occur depending on the sliding condition. Also the effect of humidity on friction was influenced by the apparent ares of contact between the two surfaces. Finally, undulations on the silicon wafer were found to be effective in trapping wear particles.

  • Wear behavior of self-mated stainless steels in NaCl solution has been investigated. The experiment was done in the corrosive liquid of which NaCl concentration of $0\~3\%$ and temperature of $15\~90^{\circ}C$. Two kinds of wear type were observed: one is 'severe wear' type which shows gradually increasing wear volume with increasing sliding distances, the other is 'mild wear' type which shows change of wear rate from high value to low at transition distance. The specific wear rate in severe wear type was not sensitive to the liquid temperature and concentration of NaCl but stable at value of $1\times10^{-3}\;mm^3$ approximately.
