  • Sliding mode control (SMC) is an effective method of controlling systems with uncertainties which satisfy the so-called matching condition. However, how to effectively handle mismatched uncertainties of systems is still an ongoing research issue in SMC. Several methods have been proposed to design a stable sliding surface even if mismatched uncertainties exist in a system. Especially, it is presented that robustness and efficiency of SMC for linear systems with mismatched uncertainties can be improved by reducing mismatched uncertainties in the reduced-order system. The reduction method needs a new sliding surface with an additional component based on Lyapunov redesign technique. In this paper, a stable sliding surface which contains additional component to reduce the influence of mismatched uncertainties, is introduced. It is designed by using linear matrix inequalities that guarantees the stability of the system. A numerical example demonstrates the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • In this paper, we present a new time-varying sliding mode system that guarantees stable error convergence. The previous papers have dealt with stability of the time-varying sliding mode system by point-wisely investigating the stability of time-invariant system every time. However, it may be unstable even though it guarantees time-invariant stability every time, We designed the time-varying sliding surface so that the resultant time-varying system on sliding mode may be Stable. The initial sliding surface is obtained so that shifting distance of the surface may be minimized with respect to an initial error, and the intercept is produced so that the surface may pass the initial error.

  • In the conventional sliding mode control(SMC), the states of controlled systems are linearly dependent because of the characteristic of the sliding surface. This means that conventional SMC can not add its robustness to other control methods. To overcome this problem, a special sliding surface with additional dynamic states has been proposed. However the additional dynamic states make it difficult to design a controller because the order ofa controller becomes higher. So, in this paper, a novel sliding surface design method, which does not require any additional dynamic state, is proposed. The relationships between the states with desirable responses can be expressed by using SVM and included in a sliding mode dynamics. The robust optimal controller with the optimal performanceand the robustness of SMC is considered.

  • Laser surface dimple patterning is a method of laser surface texturing to reduce lubrication sliding friction. The dimple pattern improves friction properties by reserving lubricant and trapping worn particles. This surface texturing technology can reduce coefficients of friction and extend the service life by applying a uniform load to the surface of the material. This study investigates the friction properties using PMMA, a highly compatible polymer material, as a specimen. We observe the friction properties of untextured specimens by processing specimens with dimple pattern densities of 5 and 10 on the surface area using laser. Dimple pattern density affects the coefficient of friction. We present the following friction property results using a pin-on-disc sliding friction test under saline lubrication. The coefficients of friction for the dimple patterned specimens are lower than those for the untextured specimens. As the normal load and sliding speed increase, the coefficients of friction of the dimple pattern specimens decrease differently from those of the untextured specimens. The specimen with a dimple pattern density of 5 at a normal load of 24.5 N and a sliding speed of 0.22 m/s has the best friction properties. Notably, different friction properties are exhibited depending on the dimple pattern densities.

  • In this paper, we present a fuzzy moving sliding mode control for two-degrree-of-freedom robotic manipulator. 17he sliding surface parameters are designed by fuzzy inference. The proposed sliding mode control makes the error always remain on the surface from beginning and therefore, the system is insensitive to system uncertaintics and external disturbances. Simulation results show the effectiveness of proposed scheme.

  • In variable structure control algorithm, sliding mode makes the closed loop system insensitive to modelling uncertainties and external disturbances. However due to imperfections in switching, the system trajectory chatters, which is very undesirable. And the insensitivity property of a sliding mode controller is present only when the system is in the sliding mode. To overcome these shortcomings, in this paper, new sliding mode control algorithm using time-varying sliding surface and fuzzy PI structrue is proposed.

  • In this paper, the discrete optimal control is made to have the robust property of Sliding mode controller. A augmented system with a virtual state is constructed for this objective and noble sliding surface is constructed based on this system. The sliding surface is the same as the optimal control trajectory in the original system. The states follow the optimal trajectory even if there exist uncertainties. The reaching phase problem of sliding mode control is disappear in this method.

  • One of the serious challenges in developing rotary compressor with HFC refrigerant is the prediction of scuffing times and wear amounts between vane and roller surfaces. In this study, the tribological characteristics of sliding surfaces using vane-roller geometry of rotary compressor were investigated. The sliding tests were carried out under various sliding speeds, normal loads and surface roughness. During the test friction force, wear depth, time to failure and surface temperature were monitored. Because severe wear was occurred on vane surface, TiN coating was applied on sliding surfaces to prolong the wear-life of vane-roller interfaces. From the sliding test it was found that there was the optimum initial surface roughness to break in and to prolong the wear life of sliding surfaces. Depending on the load and speed, the protective layers, which were composed of metallic oxide and organic compound, were formed on sliding surfaces. Those would play an important role in role amounts of friction and wear between miler and vane surfaces.
