  • In this paper, we report a self-balancing robot wheelchair which has the capability of keeping upright posture regardless of the terrain inclination in terms of the three dimensional balancing motion. It has the mobility of five degrees of freedom, where pitching, yawing, and forward motions are generated by the two-wheeled inverted pendulum mechanism and the rolling and vertical motions are implemented by the movement of the tilting mechanism. Several design considerations are suggested for the sliding type vehicle body, wheel actuator module, tilting actuator module, power and control system, and the riding module.

  • The wear behavior for the two types of composites, those are epoxy matrix composites filled with silica particles and aluminium matrix composites filled with SiC particles, were compared to investigate the wear mechanism for these composites. Especially, the effect of the volume fraction for the epoxy matrix composites and the particle size for the aluminium matrix composites according to the apply load and sliding velocity were investigated. Wear tests of the pin-on-disc mode were carried out and followed by scanning electron microscope observations for the worn surface. The addition of the fillers in the composites were improved the wear resistance significantly and changed the wear mechanism for the both composites. These results were identified by the observation of the worn surface after testing.

  • On a rotating contact surface of arbitrary shape, the relative velocity of the contact point sliding between the surfaces is computed with the basic geometries of the rotating surfaces, and the acceleration of the contact point between the contact surfaces is computed by using the relative velocity of the contact point. Thus the equation for the acceleration constraint between the contact surfaces in muitibody dynamics is not coupled with the parameters such as the relative velocity of the contact point. In case of the kinematic analysis, the acceleration of the contact point on any specific instant may also be efficiently computed by the present technique because the whole displacement of a full cycle need not be interpolated. Employing a cam-follower mechanism as a verification model, the acceleration of the contact point computed by the present technique is compared with that computed by differentiating the displacement interpolated with a large number of nodal points.

  • The tribological behavior of an Fe-based bulk amorphous alloy while sliding against a AISI 304 disc is investigated using a unidirectional pin-on-disc type tribometer in dry and distilled water environments. The rod-shaped bulk pins are fabricated by suction casting. The crystallinities of the bulk amorphous alloys before and after the friction tests are determined by X-ray diffraction. The friction coefficient and specific wear rate of the amorphous pin in the water environment are found to be twice and thrice as much as in the dry environment at a low applied pressure, respectively. However, at a higher pressure, the friction coefficient and specific wear rate are 0.4 and 1.02 mg/(Nm/s), respectively, in the water environment. A microstructure analysis shows that the worn surface of the alloy is characterized by delamination from the smooth friction surface, and thus delamination is the main wear mechanism during the friction test in dry sliding environment. In contrast, brittle fracture morphologies are apparent on the friction surface formed in distilled water environment. For the sample tested at a lower sliding speed, the XPS data from the oxide layer are similar to those of the pure element with weak suboxide peaks. For higher sliding speeds, all the main sharp peaks representing the core level binding energies are shifted to the oxide region.

  • This paper summarizes the results of a study which uses the recently developed Optical Profile Microscopy technique (Dove and Frost, 1996) as the basis for investigating the role of geomembrane surface roughness on the shear mechanism of geomembrane/geotextile interfaces. The alternative roughness parameters which consider the direction of shearing are described. These directional parameters are compared with the existing roughness parameters, and the relationship between these directional and non-directional parameters are investigated. Then, the relationship between interface shear strength and surface roughness quantified at the interface is investigated. The results show that interface friction can be quantitatively related to the surface roughness of the geomembrane. The peak and residual interface strengths increase dramatically through the use of textured geomembranes as opposed to smooth geomembranes. For the smooth geomembranes, the sliding of the geotextile is the main shear mechanism. For the textured geomembranes, the peak interface strength is mainly mobilized through the micro-texture of the geomembrane, however, the residual interface strength is primarily attributed to macro scale surface roughness which pulls out and breaks the filaments from the geotextile. The results of this study can be extended to the other interfaces such as joints in rock mass, and also can be used to provide a quantitative framework that can lead to a significantly improved basis for the selection and design of geotextiles and geomembranes in direct contact.

  • The mechanism of various spherical particles formation from wide range of tribo-systerns is suggested and deduced by the action of micro-explosion on the basis of the thermally-activated wear theory, in which the flash temperature at contact could be reached clearly upto the material molten temperature due to the secondary activation energy from the exothermic reactions involving lubricant thermo-decomposition, metals oxidation, hydrogen reactions and other possible complex thermo-reactions at the contacts. Various shapes of spherical particles generated from the tribosystem can be explained by the toroidal action of micro-explosion accompanied with the complex thermo-chemical reactions at the contact surfaces or sub-surfaces.

  • Electrostatic micro-motors can be divided into three classes: (i) salient type side drive motor, (ii) radial gap type wobble motor, (iii) axial gap type wobble motor. The working mechanism, torque evaluation, fabrication, and operational characteristics of each micro motors are compared. It is proved that axial gap type wobble motor has the bigger generating torque than that of the other type. The gear ratio of wobble motors increases the driving torque at the cost of a decreasing angular speed and decreases the friction because of the rolling motion instead of sliding at the bearing. Techniques for characterizing micro-motors performance are presented.

  • The adhesion between wheel and rail plays an important role in the braking performance of trains. Though there have been numerous studies on the characteristics of adhesion phenomenon, a general understanding from the physical point of view is still lacking. In this work, the adhesion mechanism between wheel and rail was investigated by studying the mechanisms of pure rolling and sliding experiments. Tests were performed under various conditions to determine the physical phenomenon responsible for adhesion between wheel and rail. The results of this study is expected to aid in improving the braking performance of trains.
