  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the lubricated wear properties of Saffil/Al, Saffil/$Al_2O_3/Al$ and Saffil/SiC/Al hybrid metal matrix composites fabricated by squeeze casting method. Wear tests were done on a pin-on-disk friction & wear tester with long sliding distance. The wear properties of the three composites were evaluated in many respects. The effects of Saffil, $Al_2O_3$ particles and SiC particles on the wear behavior of the composites under lubricated conditions were elucidated. Wear mechanisms were analyzed by observing the worn surfaces of the composites. The variation of coefficient of friction (COF) during the wear process was recorded by using a computer. Comparing with the dry sliding condition, all three composites showed excellent wear resistance when lubricated by liquid paraffin. Under intermediate load, Saffil/Al showed best wear resistance among them, and its COF value is the smallest. The dominant wear mechanism of the composites was microploughing, but microcracking also occurred for them to different extent.

  • This paper is studied to know wear mechanism in variation of austempering temperature and holding time of austempered ductile cast iron against mating material SM45C hardened by heat treatment. The wear tests were carried out by rubbing the annular surface of two test pieces in dry sliding friction. The wear mechanism was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and the retained austenite volume fraction was investigated by X-ray diffractometer. The experimental results show that the wear characteristics depend largely on the oxidation of the testing materials which is influenced by the sliding velocity and distance. The retained austenite has a negative effect during frictional contact because it has increased severe wear by softened surface layer. It is shown experimentally that hard metals have lower frictional resistance and hence the resistance to adhesion is increased due to stronger interatomic linking bonds and increase in the surface energy.

  • This paper is studied to know corrowive wear characteristics of austempered ductile cast ironin corrosive environments against mating SM45C hardened two test pieces in distilled water and NaCl aqueous solution. The corrosive wear mechanism was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and retained austenite volume fraction was investigated by X-ray diffractometer. The experimental result show that the corrosive wear characteristics depend largely on the $\textrm{Fe(OH)}_{3}$which is influenced by the critical sliding distance $L_{cr}$ and $L_{cr}$ shorted with increasing NaCl concentration. It was found that the carbides in matrix have a significant effect on their corrosive wear resisance and the fine acicular bainite showed corrosive wear resistance stronger than that of the coarse acicular and platelet bainite. From above results the model of corrosive wear mechanism in corrosive environments is proposed.

Shoulder and waist of the robot are adjusted by sliding mechanism to increase the workspace of the robot arms. Manipulators are designed and built and their workspaces are analyzed. Experimental studies of the robot for cleaning the floor are conducted.

  • The aim of this paper is to solve the chattering and delayed response problems caused by gear backlash. In the gear mechanism based systems, for example, in robot systems, the actuators provide the reduction gear with motors to transfer effectively electric power to mechanical power. Therefore, the gear backlash exists and is an unavoidable fact which makes many undesirable problems. In this paper, the authors try to make a solution for this issue and, introduce several control methods which are PID only, PID with Smith predictor and super-twisting algorithm based SMC(sliding mode control). Each control method is applied to the real plant in which strong backlash is included. By comparison results, it is clear that SMC gives the best control performance with little backlash effects. Also, the usefulness and effectiveness of proposed control method is verified by experiment.

  • This paper proposes a novel type of pressure control mechanism which can apply to vehicle ABS (anti-lock braking system) utilizing the piezoactuator based valve system associated with the pressure modulator. As a first step, a flapper-nozzle of a pneumatic valve system is devised by integrating the piezoacuator to the flexible beam structure. The dynamic modeling of the valve system is then undertaken and subsequently the governing equation of pressure control is derived considering the pressure modulator. A sliding mode controller is designed in order to achieve accurate pressure tracking control in the presence of actuator uncertainty as well as input pressure variation. It is shown through computer simulation that an accurate pressure tracking for sinusoidal motion whose magnitude is 40 bar is achieved by utilizing the proposed pressure control mechanism.

  • In this paper, the seismic analysis and the modeling techniques have been introduced for seismic performances assessment, when seismic isolation bearings are applied to a real bridge. Nonlinear time-history analysis is carried out using finite element analysis program. El Centro earthquake(1940, N00W) used as earthquake ground excitations. The seismic response of seismically isolated bridge is compared with that of a bridge using conventional Pot Bearings, after obtaining the displacements of the deck, the deformations of the piers, shear forces and moments of the bottoms of the piers. The analytical analysis results show that seismic isolation bearing, especially seismic isolation bearings with sliding mechanism, could reduce earthquake forces.

  • This paper is concerned on kinematic analysis and simulation of an automatic feeding mechanism subjected by the motion of a curvilinear inverse can. The curvilinear cam is rotated by positioning a translating roller and the automatic feeding mechanism is moved to the sliding position by the motion of a campin fixed on the curvilinear cam. The curvilinear cam consists of two arcs of circles and two straight lines. The modular approach is used for the kinematic analysis of the feeding mechanism. As the first part of the paper for the motion simulation of the cam-feeding system, this paper discusses the algorithm to simulate the motion of the cam-feeding mechanism. The second part of the paper presents the state-of-art for the graphics-oriented CAD technique,

  • Recently PZT is used in ultra precision mechanism field. PZT itself has a small driving range although it has a high resolution. Many methods, such as inchworm, impact driving, inertial sliding method, etc., have been applied for moving range expansion. In this study, a new actuating mechanism for rotational motion with two driving PZT is proposed. The Fixed-Fixed beam support is applied for compensation of the difference in driving force between expansion and contraction of PZT. The behavior and design parameters of the proposed mechanism are analyzed for improving performance.

  • Tribaloy 800 (T800) powder is coated on the Inconel 718 substrate by the optimal High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) thermal spray coating process developed by this laboratory. For the study of the possibility of replacing of the widely used classical chrome plating, friction, wear properties and sliding wear mechanism of coatings are investigated using reciprocating sliding tester both at room and at an elevated temperature of $1000^{\circ}F\;(538^{\circ}C). Both at room temperature and at $538^{\circ}C$, friction coefficients and wear debris of coatings are drastically reduced compared to those of non-coated surface of Inconel 718 substrate. Friction coefficients and wear traces of both coated and non-coated surfaces are drastically reduced at higher temperature of $538^{\circ}C$ compared with those at room temperature. At high temperature, the brittle oxides such as $CoO,\;Co_3O_4,\;MoO_2,\;MoO_3$ are formed rapidly on the sliding surfaces, and the brittle oxide phases are easily attrited by reciprocating slides at high temperature through complicated mixed wear mechanisms. The sliding surfaces are worn by the mixed mechanisms such as oxidative wear, abrasion, slurry erosion. The brittle oxide particles and melts and partial-melts play roles as solid and liquid lubricant reducing friction coefficient and wear. These show that the coating is highly recommendable for the durability improvement coating on the surfaces vulnerable to frictional heat and wear.
