Tubular joints have been widely used in offshore platforms and space structures due to their merits such as easy fabrication, aesthetic appearance and better static strength. For existing tubular joints, a grouted sleeve reinforced method was proposed in this paper. Experimental tests on five tubular T-joints reinforced with the grouted sleeve and two conventional tubular T-joints were conducted to investigate their mechanical behaviour. A constant axial compressive force was applied to the chord end to simulate the compressive state of the chord member during the tests. Then an axial compressive force was applied to the top end of the brace member until the collapse of the joint specimens occurred. The parameters investigated herein were the grout thickness, the sleeve length coefficient and the sleeve construction method. The failure mode, ultimate load, initial stiffness and deformability of these joint specimens were discussed. It was found that: (1) The grouted sleeve could change the failure mode of tubular T-joints. (2) The grouted sleeve was observed to provide strength enhancement up to 154.3%~172.7% for the corresponding un-reinforced joint. (3) The initial stiffness and deformability were also greatly improved by the grouted sleeve. (4) The sleeve length coefficient was a key parameter for the improved effect of the grouted sleeve reinforced method.
The Buckling of the member under compressive stress is likely to occur, which is an important factor determining the strength of structures. The objective of this study was to evaluate the member buckling strength of a circular hollow steel with ball joints and to compare with design specifications for load resistance factor of our country. Furthermore, we would like to suggest basic data for evaluation of buckling length of a circular hollow steel with ball joints according to comparative analysis. These results were summarized as follows: Buckling stress according to the test results on buckling was 1.21 times greater than LSD specifications of our country estimated the entire length of circular hollow steel with ball joints as buckling length. In addition, it was 1.16 times greater than when estimating the length except the ball as buckling length and 1.14 times grater than when excluding the ball and sleeve. Therefore, when estimating buckling stress of circular hollow steel with ball joints, their buckling length may be measured by the length except ball and sleeve.
The void volume fraction of cables is one of the effective parameters to characterize the joints of superconducting magnet. Because electrical resistance and cooling stability in the CICC (Cable-in-Conduit Conductors) joint are governed by the void volume fraction, it should be controlled constantly in the termination of cable. The change of cross-section shape in the cable was fecund during the unidirectional compaction of terminal sleeve. The non-uniform thickness of the sleeve after compaction is expected because the loading is not taxi-symmetric, and the plastic flow is also not axi-symmetric. The CICC was compacted from 45% void volume fraction to 15% by using two-piece compaction jig, which could be pressed mini-directionally. Commercial code, ABAQUS, was used to analyze the plastic flow in the sleeve during the unidirectional compaction. The increment of radius of curvature of compaction jig could minimize the change of the deformed shape of cables. The calculated results were agreed with the experimental observations.
To study the stress concentration factors (SCFs) of concrete-filled tubular Y-joints subject to in-plane bending, experiments were used to investigate the hot spot stress distribution along the intersection between chord and brace. Three concrete-filled tubular chords forming Y-joints were tested with different reinforcing components, including doubler-plate, sleeve, and haunch-plate reinforcement. In addition, an unreinforced joint was also tested for comparison. Test results indicate that the three different forms of reinforcement effectively reduce the peak SCFs compared with the unreinforced joint. The current research suggests that the linear extrapolation method can be used for chords, whereas the quadratic extrapolation method must be used for braces. The SCF is effectively reduced and more evenly distributed when the value of the axial compression ratio in the chord is increased. Furthermore, the SCFs obtained from the test results were compared to predictions from some well-established SCF equations. Generally, the predictions from those equations are very consistent for braces, but very conservative for concrete-filled chords.

The joints between the superconducting wires are inevitably needed from the requirement of a high magnetic stability with respect to time in the superconducting MRI magnet. In this study, a new superconducting joint using Cu/Nb-Ti sleeve has been tried on the MRI type Nb-Ti superconducting wires. The transformer induction type apparatus was made and applied to measure the joint resistance. A very low joint resistance of 10\ulcorner $\Omega$ could be successfully obtained from this joint method. It was confirmed that the initial rapid current decay occurs before the very stable current decay due to only superconducting joint. Some unstable part in the joint like exposed filaments causes the initial induced current to lower and influence on the increase of the joint resistance.
Forefoot disorders are often seen in clinical practice. Forefoot deformity and pain can deteriorate gait function and decrease quality of life. This review presents common forefoot disorders and conservative treatment using an insole or orthosis. Metatarsalgia is a painful foot condition affecting the metatarsal (MT) region of the foot. A MT pad, MT bar, or forefoot cushion can be used to alleviate MT pain. Hallux valgus is a deformity characterized by medial deviation of the first MT and lateral deviation of the hallux. A toe spreader, valgus splint, and bunion shield are commonly applied to patients with hallux valgus. Hallux limitus and hallux rigidus refer to painful limitations of dorsiflexion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint. A kinetic wedge foot orthosis or rocker sole can help relieve symptoms from hallux limitus or rigidus. Hammer, claw, and mallet toes are sagittal plane deformities of the lesser toes. Toe sleeve or padding can be applied over high-pressure areas in the proximal or distal interphalangeal joints or under the MT heads. An MT off-loading insole can also be used to alleviate symptoms following lesser toe deformities. Morton's neuroma is a benign neuroma of an intermetatarsal plantar nerve that leads to a painful condition affecting the MT area. The MT bar, the plantar pad, or a more cushioned insole would be useful. In addition, patients with any of the above various forefoot disorders should avoid tight-fitting or high-heeled shoes. Applying an insole or orthosis and wearing proper shoes can be beneficial for managing forefoot disorders.

A study on optimizing the friction welding of copper(C1100) to aluminium(A1050) for developing the electrical sleeve was experimentally carried out and also on real-time nondestructive evaluation of the friction weld quality (strength) was accomplished by acoustic emission technique. The results obtained are summarized as the following ; 1) The heating upset $U_1$(mm) or total upset U(mm) tends to increase according to the increase of heating time $t_1$(sec). The relations between $U_1$ and $t_1$ or U and $t_1$are computed as follows when n=2000rpm, $P_1$=4, $P_2$=8kgf/$mm^2$, and $t_2$=6sec. U=1.6$e^{0.39t_1}$$U_1$=3.65$e^{0.25t_1}$. 2) It was notified that the proper welding conditions by considering on both strength with more than 100% joint effieciency and toughness are heating time of 1.5-2.25 sec under n=200rpm, $P_1$=4, $P_2$=8kgf/$mm^2$, $t_2$=6sec. 3) It was confirmed that both AE total counts(N, counts) and the weld tensile strength (${\sigma}$, kgf/$mm^2$) of the welded joints increase as the increase of heating time, respectively, the relations between N and $t_1$, ${\sigma}$ and $t_1$ are computed from data points by regression analysis using the least square method as follows in case of the above proper condition ; N=50108+23917(ln $t_1$)${\sigma}$$=11.85+2.06(ln $t_1$). 4) Both empirical and calcularated equations of relationship between .sigma. and N are very coincident with a high reliability, as the following in case of the above proper welding condition ; Calculated : ${\sigma}$=0.00008N+7.5 Empirical :${\sigma}$= $8.17e^{0.0000072N}$. 5) It was confirmed that the real-time nondestructive weld strength evaluation for friction welding of copper(C1100) to aluminium(A1050) could be possible by acoustic emission technique.
