The primary factors affecting concrete sulfate resistance are the chemical composition of the Portland cement, and the chemistry and quantity of mineral admixtures. To investigate the effect of those on the sulfate attack, the testing program involved several different mortar mixes using the standardized test, ASTM C1012. Four different cements were evaluated, including one Type I cement, two Type I-II cements, and one Type V cement. Mortar mixes were also made with mineral admixtures, as each cement was combined with three different types of mineral admixtures. One Class F fly ash, one Class C fly ash, and one ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) were added in various percent volumetric replacement levels. Expansion measurements were taken and investigated with the expansion criteria recommended by ASTM.

Because of the important role LD converters play in the production of high quality steel, various dynamic models have been attempted in the past by many researchers not only to understand the complex chemical reactions that take place in the converter process but also to assist the converter operation itself using computers. And yet no single dynamic model was found to be completely satisfactory because of the complexity involved with the process. The process indeed involves dynamic energy and mass balances at high temperatures accompanied by complex chemical reactions and transport phenomena in the molten state. In the present study, a mathematical model describing the dynamic behavior of LD converter process has been developed. The dynamic model describes the time behavior of the temperature and the concentrations of chemical species in the hot metal bath and slag. The analysis was greatly facilitated by dividing the entire process into three zones according to the physical boundaries and reaction mechanisms. These three zones were hot metal (zone 1), slag (zone 2) and emulsion (zone 3) zones. The removal rate of Si, C, Mn and P and the rate of Fe oxidation in the hot metal bath, and the change of composition in the slag were obtained as functions of time, operating conditions and kinetic parameters. The temperature behavior in the metal bath and the slag was also obtained by considering the heat transfer between the mixing and the slag zones and the heat generated from chemical reactions involving oxygen blowing. To identify the unknown parameters in the equations and simulate the dynamic model, Hooke and Jeeves parttern search and Runge-Kutta integration algorithm were used. By testing and fitting the model with the data obtained from the operation of POSCO #2 steelmaking plant, the dynamic model was able to predict the characteristics of the main components in the LD converter. It was possible to predict the optimum CO gas recovery by computer simulation
The steel industry, a representative industry that significantly consumes raw materials and energy, produces steel as well as a large amount of by-product steel slag through the production process. The vast habitat foundation of marine life has been destroyed due to recent reckless marine development and environment pollution, resulting in intensification of the decline of marine resources, and a solution to this issue is imperative. In order to propose a method to recycle large amounts of by-product slag into a material that can serve as an alternative to natural aggregate, the engineering properties and applicability for each mixing factor of environment friendly porous concrete as a material for the composition of marine ranches were evaluated in this study. The test results for percentage of voids per mixing ratio revealed that the margin of error for all conditions was within 2.5%. The compressive strength test results showed that the most outstanding environmental friendly porous concrete can be manufactured when mixing 30% slag aggregate and 10% specially treated granular fertilizer for the optimum volume fraction. As concrete for marine applications, the best seawater resistance was obtained with mixing conditions for high compression strength. An assessment of the ability to provide a marine life habitat foundation of environmentally friendly porous concrete showed that a greater percentage of voids facilitated implantation and inhabitation of marine life, and the mixing of specially treated granular fertilizer led to active initial implantation and activation of inhabitation. The evaluation of harmfulness to marine life depending on the mixture of slag aggregate and specially treated granular fertilizer revealed that the stability of fish is secured.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the expansion of alkali-activated mortar based on ground granulated blast furnace slag containing reactive aggregate due to alkali-silica reaction. In addition, this study was particularly concerned with the behavior of these alkaline materials in the presence of reactive aggregates. The experimental program included expansion measurement of the mortar bar specimens, as well as the determination of the morphology and composition of the alkali-silica reaction products by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray(EDX). The experiment showed that while alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag mortars showed expansion due to the alkali-silica reaction, the expansion was 0.1% at Curing Day 14, showing that it is safe. After the accelerated test, SEM and BEM analysis showed the presence of alkali-silica gel and rim around the aggregate and cement paste. According to the EDX, the reaction products decreased markedly as alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag was used. In addition, for the substitutive materials of mineral admixture, a further study on improving the quality of alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag is needed to assure of the durability properties of concrete.
Spent refractories from a coal gasifier after 1000 hours of operation were analyzed for crystalline phases, chemical composition and microstructures as a function of slag penetration depth, and the slag corrosion mechanism was determined. The chemical corrosion of chromia refractory occurred via reaction between Cr$_2$O$_3$ of the refractory and FeO and A1$_2$O$_3$ in the slag. The FeO reacted with Cr$_2$O$_3$ at the slare/refractory interface and formed FeCr$_2$O$_4$. After all FeO were consumed, Al in the penetrating slag substituted Cr in Cr$_2$O$_3$, forming (Al, Cr)$_2$O$_3$, at the edges of the particle, which were broken to form fragments rich in Al. The corrosion resistance of Cr$_2$O$_3$ varied with the particle size and the extent of sintering, and the higher resistance was observed in the larger and more sintered particles. There was no chemical change in ZrO$_2$, but showed the effects of physical corrosion: the grain boundaries became more wavy, and ZrO$_2$ grains were split in the corroded area. The slag penetration depth increased in the refractory samples farther down from the feed nozzles.

Na-A zeolite were synthesized from melting slag of the incinerated ash by the alkaline activation processes. The experiments were performed in stainless steel vessels, with continuous stirring during the reaction periods. The silica-rich solution, a starting material, which was the waste of crystal growth factory, contains 5.7 wt% SiO₂ and 3.2 wt% Na₂O. And NaAlO₂ was made by the reaction of aluminium dross and NaOH solution and its molar ratios were Na₂O/Al₂O₃= 1.2 and H₂O/Na₂O=9. During the residence time of 7∼8 h at 80℃, the mixing of the silica-rich solution, NaAlO₂ and melting slag yields the production of homogeneous Na-A zeolite. The optimal reactant composition in molar ratio of Na₂O:Al₂O₃:SiO₂ was 1.3∼l.4 : 0.8∼0.9 : 2 and mixing ratio of solution and slag was 1/7∼10 (g/cc). Synthesized Na-A zeolite has cubic form uniformly and its size ranges about 1 ㎛. Ca/sup 2+/ ion exchange capacity of the Na-A was about 180∼210 meq/100g, corresponding approximately 80% to the commercial detergent builder.
The mixtures which are in the chemical composition of Portland cement were prepared from oyster shell, casting dust and BOF slag. The clinkerbility and the behaviour of formation of clinker minora]s were studied using the mixtures mainly by the mineral and microstructural observation. By virtue of the characteristics of starting raw materials, the clinkering temperature was lower as much as 100$^{\circ}C$ than that of a mixture prepared from normal raw materials. Uncombined calcium oxide was vanished entirely below 1350$^{\circ}C$. and the formation of major cement minerals such as alite and belite could be nearly accomplished without too much liquid phase within 1400$^{\circ}C$.

To improve the problem of strength reduction of unary and binary blended non-cement concrete that occur at room temperature, comparative analysis was conducted based on the slump and compressive strength properties of ternary blended non-cement concrete in which cement was replaced with silica fume, fly ash, and blast furnace slag, and the following conclusions were drawn. The ternary blended non-cement concrete showed higher compressive strength than binary binder concrete, and the slump reduction was less when 10% silica fume was mixed. In addition, the appropriate composition ratio range of each by-product was suggested according to slump and compressive strength level based on ternary diagram.
In this work, on-site corrosion behavior of heat resistant tubes of T91, used as components of a superheater in a power plant for up to 25,762 h, has been investigated using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and electron backscattered diffraction(EBSD), with the objectives of studying the composition, phase distribution, and evolution during service. A multi-layer structure of oxide scale was found on both the steamside and the fireside of the tube surface; the phase distribution was in the order of hematite/magnetite/spinel from the outer to the inner matrix on the steamside, and in the order of slag/magnetite/spinel from the outer to the inner matrix on the fireside. The magnetite layer was found to be rich in pores and cracks. The absence of a hematite layer on the fireside was considered to be due to the low oxygen partial pressure in the corrosion environment. The thicknesses of the hematite and of the slag-deposit layer were found to exhibit no significant change with the increase of the service time.
In the secondary refining process for the production of high-grade steel, the proper composition is maintained by alloying elements, and non-metallic inclusions are controlled for high cleanliness. Complex reactions occur simultaneously between the molten steel, slag, inclusions, refractories, and alloying elements during the secondary refining process. Previous works have reported simulation models based on kinetics to predict the compositional changes in molten steel, slag, and inclusions in actual processes. Analytical reviews are required for the models to predict the process accurately. In this study, we reviewed and analyzed simulation models based on the coupled reaction model for the secondary refining process.
