  • Among all the slags, ladle furnace slag (LFS) is reducing slag generated from electric arc furnace. After cooled rapidly by high-pressured air (atomizing technology), LFS has more amorphous phase than slow cooled slag. Therefore, it shows higher reactivity than another recycling slag. This material also is named by rapid cooling LFS (RC-LFS). Pulverized RC-LFS should be fully understood. This paper deal with the present some basic experimental properties and discussions about the setting time of pulverized RC-LFS with different gypsum under the various temperatures. According to the experimental results, the pulverized RC-LFS with gypsum can hydrate in a low-temperature environment, even though the initial and final setting time are delayed.

  • It is known that polymer concretes are 8~10 times more expensive than ordinary Portland cement concretes; therefore, in the production of polymer concrete products, it is very important to reduce the amount of polymer binders used because this occupies the most of the production cost of polymer concretes. In order to develop a technology for the reduction of polymer binders, smooth and spherical aggregates were prepared by the atomizing technology using the oxidation process steel slag (electric arc furnace slag, EAFS) and the reduction process steel slag (ladle furnace slag, LFS) generated by steel industries. A reduction in the amount of polymer binders used was expected because of an improvement in the workability of polymer concretes as a result of the ball-bearing effect and maximum filling effect in case the polymer concrete was prepared using the smooth and spherical atomized steel slag instead of the calcium carbonate (filler) and river sand (fine aggregate) that were generally used in polymer concretes. To investigate physical properties of the polymer concrete, specimens of the polymer concrete were prepared with various proportions of polymer binder and replacement ratios of the atomized reduction process steel slag. The results showed that the compressive strengths of the specimens increased gradually along with the higher replacement ratios of the atomized steel slag, but the flexural strength showed a different maximum strength depending on the addition ratio of polymer binders. In the hot water resistance test, the compressive strength, flexural strength, bulk density, and average pore diameter decreased; but the total pore volume and porosity increased. It was found that the polymer concrete developed in this study was able to have a 19% reduction in the amount of polymer binders compared with that of the conventional product because of the remarkable improvement in the workability of polymer concretes using the spherical atomized oxidation steel slag and atomized reduction steel slag instead of the calcium carbonate and river sand.

  • To recycle the steel slag as manufactured composite materials of polymer concretes, we used the atomizing method to make round aggregates from steel slag, which is treated as industrial wastes. A round rapid-cooled steel slag was used to replace fine aggregate (river sand) or coarse aggregate (crushed aggregate), depending on the grain size. To examine general physical properties of polymer concrete composites manufactured from rapid-cooled steel slag, the polymer concrete specimen with various proportions depending on the addition ratio of polymer binder and replacement ratio of rapid-cooled steel slag were manufactured. In the result of the tests, the mechanical strength of the specimen made by replacing the optimum amount of rapid-cooled steel slag increased notably (maximum compressive strength 117.1 MPa), and the use of polymer binder, which had the most impact on the production cost of polymer concrete composites, could be remarkably reduced. However, the mechanical strength of the specimen was markedly reduced in hot water resistance test of polymer concrete composite.

  • Ladle furnace slag is a byproduct of the steel-making process, and it contains the mineral β-C2Sandtherapid-settingmineral (dependingonwhichreducingagenthasbeenused). Ladle furnace slag is often treated through slow cooling, which causes the slag to lose its reactivity. In this study, the properties of air-quenched CAC and pulverized ladle furnace slag containing gypsum were evaluated, and the optimal mixing ratio was determined for broadening their usage. Consequently, the properties of CAC aredemonstrated by the dissolution of gypsum after a period of three hours and the content of gypsum after a period of one day. The optimal mixing ratio of anhydrate and hemihydrate gypsum is found to be within 30% and that of dihydrate gypsum is found to be higher than 35%. Furthermore, based on the results of CAC with dihydrate gypsum, the applicability of the by-product dihydrate gypsum has been verified.

  • The purpose of this study is to recycle steel slag generated from the iron producing process and to use steel slag as a construction material which is currently landfilled Steel slag is subjected to aging treatment due to the problem of expansion and collapse when it reacts with water. The Slag Atomizing Technology (SAT) method developed to solve these problems of expanding collapse of steel slag. In this study, experimental study on the emergency repair mortar using the reducing slag, electric arc furnace slag and silicon manganese slag manufactured by the SAT method is Reduced slag was shown an accelerated hydration when it was replaced with rapidly-setting cement, and the rate of substitution was equivalent to 15%. It is shown that the electric furnace oxide slag is equivalent to 100% of the natural aggregate, and it can be replaced by 15-30% when the silicon manganic slag is substituted for the electric furnace oxide slag. With the above formulation, it was possible to design the rapidly repair mortar for road use. These recycling slags can contribute on achieving sustainability of construction industry by reducing the use of cement and natural aggregates and by reducing the generation of carbon dioxide and recycling waste slag.

  • Substitution of natural fine aggregates with industrial by-products like precious slag balls (PS Balls) offers various advantages like technical, economic and environmental which are very important in the present era of sustainability in construction industry. PS balls are manufactured by subjecting steel slag to slag atomizing Technology (SAT) which imparts them the desirable characteristics of fine aggregates. The main objective of this research paper is to assess the feasibility of producing good quality concrete by using PS balls, to identify the potential benefits by their incorporation and to provide solution for increasing their utilization in concrete applications. The study investigates the effect of PS balls as partial replacement of fine aggregates in various percentages (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%) on mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength. The optimum mix was found to be at 40% replacement of PS balls with maximum strength of 62.89 MPa at 28 days curing. Permeability of concrete was performed and it resulted in a more durable concrete with replacement of PS balls at 40% and 100% as fine aggregates. These two specific values were considered as optimum replacement is 40% and also the maximum possible replacement is 100%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was done and it was found that the PS balls in concrete were unaffected and with optimum percentage of PS balls as fine aggregates in concrete resulted in good strength and less cracks. Hence, it is possible to produce good workable concrete with low water to cement ratio and higher strength concrete by incorporating PS balls.

  • Recently, application case of the ultra rapid hardening concrete-polymer composite(URHCPC) are increasing to repair for the deterioration of pavement. But it is a major disadvantage that the main material is expensive and has environmental load. For these reasons, the development of the economic, eco-friendly materials is needed. Calcium Aluminate Composite (CAC), produced by rapid cooling of atomizing method with molten ladle furnace slag, is a material capable of improving the economic feasibility and reducing the environmental load of URHCPC. In this paper, the properties of CAC and gypsum mixed CAC (GC) as alternative materials of RSC according to the types of polymer dispersion were studied. The results were as follows; compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, bonding strength and modulus of elasticity of the composites using CAC or GC showed higher values than those of plain proportion in 3 hour. In later age, they were at the same level as the general proportions. URHCPC using BPD as polymer dispersion had superior strength properties generally. But modulus of elasticity was the same level as the case of using a SBR latex. According to these results, CAC or GC can partially substituted for RSC to product the URHCPC. When URHCPC uses the BPD as the polymer dispersion, it can be improved performance.
