  • Skin aging process on pre-menopausal women is a problem that needs to be prevented as early as possible. The decrease of oestrogen level which is one of the intrinsic factors of the skin aging process will affect the skin biological process, due to oestrogen receptors on the skin. A number of researches conducted on pre-menopausal women with the allocation of oestrogen hormone resulted in delaying the skin aging process. The administration of soy isoflavon, a phytoestrogen found in daily food, on pre-menopausal women is hoped to be able to prevent skin aging process, even clinically or molecular biologically. This research aims to explain the benefit of administering of soy isoflavon on skin aging process. The design of the research is randomised controlled trial (RCT). As many as 60 pre-menopausal women were collected with simple random sampling method. Soy isoflavon is an independent variable, while skin aging process is a dependent variable assessed from the hydration, sebum level, average roughness, depth of wrinkles, skin clarity, length of the telomere. Analysis was conducted using t and MANDVA tests and.the result showed a significance (F = 10,439; p = 0,001) over the allocation of soy isoflavon to the whole variable dependent, including the telomere length and the skin hydration, meant that allocation of soy isoflavon could delay skin aging process.

  • Purpose: For facial reconstruction, skin color match is crucial to achieve great aesthetic result. Forehead flap and full thickness skin graft have been used for many years to reconstruct facial defect. Their results are aesthetically valuable with remarkable resemblance and harmony of the skin color between donor and recipient sites. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the aesthetic outcome of the two methods as the analysis of skin color match. Methods: From January 1995 to December 2005, ten forehead flaps and ten full thickness skin grafts were performed. The reconstructed areas of forehead flaps were five noses and five eyelids. Recipient sites of full thickness skin grafts were seven eyelids, two noses and one forehead. In order to obtain the objective validity, the skin color of flap(or graft) and the recipient sites were measured by chromameter. The skin colors were quantified according to a three-dimensional coordinate system used in chromameter, L*(brightness), a*(redness), and b*(yellowness). Results: There was no significant color difference between forehead flap site and adjacent skin in all color values. On the other hand, the L* and b* values of graft sites were significantly lower than those of the adjacent skins. The a* values of graft sites were higher than those of the adjacent skins. Conclusion: This study reveals that skin color match of forehead flap is greater than that of full thickness skin graft. As forehead flap has adequate volume and great color match, it can be useful to reconstruct deep facial defect such as nasal defect. On the other hand, full thickness skin graft can be used for superficial defect like partial eyelid defect.

  • The correct detection of skin color is an important preliminary process in fields of face detection and human motion analysis. It is generally performed by three steps: transforming the pixel color to a non-RGB color space, dropping the illuminance component of skin color, and classifying the pixels by the skin color distribution model. Skin detection depends on by various factors such as color space, presence of the illumination, skin modeling method. In this paper we propose a 3d skin color model that can segment pixels with several ethnic skin color from images with various illumination condition and complicated backgrounds. This proposed skin color model are formed with each components(Y, Cb, Cr) which transform pixel color to YCbCr color space. In order to segment the skin color of several ethnic groups together, we first create the skin color model of each ethnic group, and then merge the skin color model using its skin color probability. Further, proposed model makes several steps of skin color areas that can help to classify proper skin color areas using small training data.

  • This paper investigated the negative skin friction acting on the model piles driven in the cylindrical chamber filled with remolded marine clay. In model tests, three load cells were installed on the model piles consisting of three parts to measure the negative skin friction forces independently. Pore pressures and ground movements were monitored throughout the period of investigation. Finite element analysis was used to simulate the behavior of a model pile. This paper describes the comparison of the behavior of negative skin friction on the single model pile with a numerical analysis by CRISP.

  • Near Infrared spectroscopy (NIR) used on human skin measurement was explored in the past decade. Many publications in different journals and magazines discussed the feasibility of the NIR technique for cosmetic product property studies. Based upon the results of pioneers, we have pursued some work of the NIR instrument coupled with a probe module for skin measurement in vivo and vitro. In part I of this paper, the specific Near Infrared spectroscopy instrument stability, human subject conditions and other parameters, which could affect the measurements reproducibility are discussed. Second derivative NIR spectra and Principle Components Analysis (PCA) are utilised for data interpretation. In part II of this paper, the relationship of human skin moisture and ageing, the gender information and finally, the discovery of penetration depth of NIR incident light on skin are reported. A theoretical penetration depth calculation equation is proposed. In part III, the study results of a couple of commercial skin care products effect will be described. The skin lotions were applied on human skin (in vivo) in order to exam the NIR feasibility to monitor the changes of moisture level. The results are consistently positive. From our primary study, it can conclude that the NIR is potentially a very powerful instrument for skin condition diagnostics, either for cosmetic and/or for medication purposes.

  • Objective : To study the effect of the Insamyangyoung-tang(ISYT) extract on the skin barrier function, the skin pH, skin humidity and transepidermal water loss(TEWL) were measured and histological changes were observed in DNCB(2,4-dinitrochloro-benzen)-induced contact dermatitis(CD) hairless mice. Methods : The male hairless mice were divided into three groups. Each group consisted of 15 mice. The normal group which had acetone- olive oil applied. The control group which had intentionally induced CD by DNCB and it was fed normal saline orally. The ISYT group which had intentionally induced CD by DNCB and it was fed ISYT extract orally for 7 days. The three groups were checked 24h, 48h and 72h later after inducing CD, and the skin pH, skin humidity and TEWL were observed. Tissue samples were taken, and damage to the epithelial cell was observed. Statistical analysis was performed by using one way-ANOVA: significance was set at p values less than 5% (p<0.05). Results : ISYTextract efficiently maintained the pH balance, it kept the skin humidity at a normal level, and it inhibited TEWL of the DNCB-induced CD hairless mouse. The damage to the epithelium was decreased and the regeneration power of the skin was increased in the ISYT group. Conclusion : Insamyangyoung-tang has a good effect on the skin barrier function of DNCB induced contact dermatitis hairless mice.

  • With the growing interest in skincare and maintenance, there are increasing numbers of studies on the classification of skin type and the factors influencing each type. This study presents a novel methodology by using data mining, for the determination of the relationships between skin type, lifestyle, and patterns of cosmetic utilization. Eight skin-specific factors, which are moisture, sebum in U-zone (both cheeks), sebum in T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), pore, melanin, wrinkle, acne, hemoglobin, were measured in 1,246 subjects living in South Korea, in conjunction with a questionnaire survey analyzing their lifestyles and pattern of cosmetic utilization. Using various multivariate statistical methods and data mining techniques, we classified the skin types based on the skin-specific values, determined the relationship between skin type and lifestyle, and accordingly sorted the subjects into clusters. Logistic regression analysis revealed gender-related differences in the skin; therefore, separate analyses were performed for males and females. Using the Gaussian Mixture Modeling (GMM) technique, we classified the subjects based on skin type (two male and four female). Using the ANOVA and decision tree techniques, we attempted to characterize the relationship between each skin type and the lifestyles of the subjects. Menstruation, eating habits, stress, and smoking were identified as the major factors affecting the skin.

  • The situation of technology Predominance and the distribution of core technology were visually mapped thorough the investigation of technical trend during 20 years, which was provided with the analysis of patent information for the artificial skin. Therefore, it was expected that technology mapping by means of multilateral analysis method allowed a good grasp of current technology trend of the artificial skin and the subdivision into nation and a field of research presents the direction of R&D. In the early R&D stage of artificial skin, the preparation technology of filters implantable into the living body including nursing devices, bandages, and dressings or absorbent pads (A6IF-002/10) was on the rise in research field of artificial skin until 1980's. And then the materials technology for coating prostheses (A6l L-027/00)was leading the core technology of artificial skin. Also, Nowadays the fusion technology connected the material technology with the cultivation technology of undifferentiated human or animal cells/tissues including culture media (C l2N-005/00, C 12N-005/06) was highlighted all over the world.
