Yaw wind effect on flutter instability of four typical bridge decks

  • When evaluating flutter instability, it is often assumed that incident wind is normal to the longitudinal axis of a bridge and the flutter critical wind speed estimated from this direction is most unfavorable. However, the results obtained in this study via oblique sectional model tests of four typical types of bridge decks show that the lowest flutter critical wind speeds often occur in the yaw wind cases. The four types of bridge decks tested include a flat single-box deck, a flat ${\Pi}$-shaped thin-wall deck, a flat twin side-girder deck, and a truss-stiffened deck with and without a narrow central gap. The yaw wind effect could reduce the critical wind speed by about 6%, 2%, 8%, 7%, respectively, for the above four types of decks within a wind inclination angle range between $-3^{\circ}$ and $3^{\circ}$, and the yaw wind angles corresponding to the minimal critical wind speeds are between $4^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$. It was also found that the flutter critical wind speed varies in an undulate manner with the increase of yaw angle, and the variation pattern is largely dependent on both deck shape and wind inclination angle. Therefore, the cosine rule based on the mean wind decomposition is generally inapplicable to the estimation of flutter critical wind speed of long-span bridges under skew winds. The unfavorable effect of yaw wind on the flutter instability of long-span bridges should be taken into consideration seriously in the future practice, especially for supper-long span bridges in strong wind regions.

자연영상에서 교통 표지판의 기울기 보정 및 덱스트 추출 (Skew Compensation and Text Extraction of The Traffic Sign in Natural Scenes)

  • 본 논문은 자연영상에서 얻은 교통표지판의 기울기를 보정하고 텍스트를 추출하는 방법을 제안한다. 본 연구는 명도 이미지를 대상으로 모든 과정이 4단계로 이루어진다. 첫째, 자연 영상에서 에지 검출을 위한 전처리 및 Canny 에지 추출을 수행하며, 둘째, 영상의 기울기를 추출하기 위해 허프 변환에 대한 전처리와 후처리를 한 후, 셋째로 잡음영상과 선을 제거하고 텍스트가 가지고 있는 특징을 이용하여 후보영역 검출을 한다 마지막으로 검출된 텍스트 후보영역 안에서 지역적 이진화를 수행한 후, 불필요한 비텍스트 연결 요소를 추려내기 위해 텍스트와 비텍스트 간의 연결요소에 나타나는 특징 차이를 이용하여 텍스트 추출을 수행한다 100장의 샘플영상을 대상으로 실험한 결과 82.54$\%$ 텍스트 추출률과 79.69$\%$ 추출 정확도를 가짐으로써 기존의 런 길이 평활화 방법이나 퓨리어 변환을 이용한 방법보다 더 정확한 텍스트 추출 향상을 보였다. 또한 기울어진 각도 추출에서도 94.3$\%$의 추출률로 기존의 Hough 변환만을 이용한 방법보다 약 26$\%$의 향상을 보였다. 본 연구는 시각 장애인 보행 보조 시스템이나 무인 자동차 운행에 있어 위치 정보를 제공하는데 활용할수 있을 것이다.

Effect of internal angles between limbs of cross plan shaped tall building under wind load

  • The present study revealed comparison the pressure distribution on the surfaces of regular cross plan shaped building with angular cross plan shaped building which is being transformed from basic cross plan shaped building through the variation of internal angles between limbs by $15^{\circ}$ for various wind incidence angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ at an interval of $30^{\circ}$. In order to maintain the area same the limbs sizes are slightly increased accordingly. Numerical analysis has been carried out to generate similar nature of flow condition as per IS: 875 (Part -III):1987 (a mean wind velocity of 10 m/s) by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with help of ANSYS CFX ($k-{\varepsilon}$ model). The variation of mean pressure coefficients, pressure distribution over the surface, flow pattern and force coefficient are evaluated for each cases and represented graphically to understand extent of nonconformities due to such angular modifications in plan. Finally regular cross shaped building results are compared with wind tunnel results obtained from similar '+' shaped building study with similar flow condition. Reduction in along wind force coefficients for angular crossed shaped building, observed for various skew angles leads to develop lesser along wind force on building compared to regular crossed shaped building and square plan shaped building. Interference effect within the internal faces are observed in particular faces of building for both cases, considerably. Significant deviation is noticed in wind induced responses for angular cross building compared to regular cross shaped building for different direction wind flow.

수평으로 경사진 박스암거 위 콘크리트 포장 슬래브의 최적 줄눈위치 (Optimal Joint Position in Concrete Pavement Slab over Skewed Box Culvert)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate the optimal joint positions which can minimize distresses of concrete pavement containing box culvert with horizontally skewed angles. METHODS : The concrete pavement containing the box culvert with different skewed angles and soil cover depths was modeled by 3 dimensional finite element method. The contact boundary condition was used between concrete and soil structures in addition to the nonlinear material property of soil in the finite element model. A dynamic analysis was performed by applying the self weight of pavement, negative temperature gradient of slab, and moving vehicle load simultaneously. RESULTS : In case of zero skewed angle ($0^{\circ}$), the maximum tensile stress of slab was the lowest when the joint was positioned directly over side of box culvert. In case there was a skewed angle, the maximum tensile stress of slab was the lowest when the joint passed the intersection between side of the box culvert and longitudinal centerline of slab. The magnitude of the maximum tensile stress converged to a constant value regardless the joint position from 3m of soil cover depth at all of the horizontally skewed angles. CONCLUSIONS : More reasonable and accurate design of the concrete pavement containing the box culvert can be possible based on the research results.

비접촉형 마그넷기어를 적용한 클린 반송장치의 개발 (Development of Non-Contact Conveyor for Clean Process by Applying Magnet Gears)

  • 헬리컬형으로 자화된 영구자석을 이용한 비접촉 마그넷 기어를 개발하기 위하여 3차원 FEM 해석 기법을 활용하였고 마그넷 기어의 자기적 특성 해석 및 설계 요소기술을 확보하였다. 마그넷 기어를 이용한 클린 반송 컨베이어 및 회전장치의 성능평가를 위하여 class 10의 클린부스 환경에서 시험운전을 거쳐, 이송 속도, 최대 허용 토크, 클린도, 최대 이송 중량, 헌팅 유무, 소음도 등을 측정한 결과 클린도 class 10의 공정까지도 대응이 가능한 것으로 확인되었다.

  • R.C. Rahmen bridges have been widely constructed in the location of interchange or narrow road crossing. In addition, skewed or curved rahmen bridges are mostly constructed in comparison with normal rahmen bridges for the purpose of maintaining the route of road or considering the beauty of bridge. However, due to the functional characteristics, rahmen bridges are sustained under the direct vehicle loads and the side directional earth pressure so that the stress concentration with respect to the geometrical eccentricity can be occurred if rahmen bridges are constructed in large amount of skew. In this investigation, the behavior of skewed rahmen bridges which is located in curved route has been analysed to investigate the additional effects on the change of stress concentration. As a result, it is judged that the stress of curved rahmen bridges is more concentrated than the stress of straight rahmen bridges in the region of obtuse angle. However, in the middle of slab, the curve does not affect on the stress concentration.

하이브리드 차량의 엔진 및 배터리 냉각팬 구동용 BLDC모터 개발 (Development of BLDC Motor for HEV Engine Cooling and Battery Cooling System)

  • Hybrid Electric Vehicles(HEVs) have seriously come into prevalence recently as car manufacturers and consumers have become more aware of the environmental and economic problems of conventional vehicles. For the alternative power-train and battery cooling systems in HEVs, an effective thermal management system is required, and many automakers are interested in using Brushless DC(BLDC) motors for cooling fans for the overall traction unit's performance and energy saving capability. This paper presents the development status of BLDC motors as major parts of the power-train, i.e. the engine cooling and battery cooling fans of HEVs. A design that uses BLDC motors for the power-train and each battery cooling fan, is successfully implemented through using electro-magnetic analysis, and prototype BLDC motors are examined. As experimental results, the BLDC motors achieved an efficiency of 85% as engine cooling fans and 72% as a battery thermal management fan motor. The electric cogging noise is significantly reduced by changing the skew of the slot pitch angle and optimizing the magnetic shape.

Inflow Prediction and First Principles Modeling of a Coaxial Rotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle in Forward Flight

  • When the speed of a coaxial rotor helicopter in forward flight increases, the wake skew angle of the rotor increases and consequently the position of the vena contracta of the upper rotor with respect to the lower rotor changes. Considering ambient air and the effect of the upper rotor, this study proposes a nonuniform inflow model for the lower rotor of a coaxial rotor helicopter in forward flight. The total required power of the coaxial rotor system was compared against Dingeldein's experimental data, and the results of the proposed model were well matched. A plant model was also developed from first principles for flight simulation, unknown parameter estimation and control analysis. The coaxial rotor helicopter used for this study was manufactured for surveillance and reconnaissance and does not have any stabilizer bar. Therefore, a feedback controller was included during flight test and parameter estimation to overcome unstable situations. Predicted responses of parameter estimation and validation show good agreement with experimental data. Therefore, the methodology described in this paper can be used to develop numerical plant model, study non-uniform inflow model, conduct performance analysis and parameter estimation of coaxial rotor as well as other rotorcrafts in forward flight.

카메라기반의 왜곡이 보정된 흑백 문서 영상 생성 (Distortion Corrected Black and White Document Image Generation Based on Camera)

  • 스캐너 대신 카메라를 이용하여 문서의 사본 영상을 촬영하면 촬영 각도에 따라 기하학적 왜곡이 발생하거나 그림자가 생길 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 카메라로 촬영한 문서 영상으로부터 왜곡을 보정하고 그림자 영향을 제거한 흑백 문서 영상 생성 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 카메라 렌즈의 방사 왜곡으로 인해 휘어진 테두리를 펴거나 촬영 각도에 따라 유입된 문서 외부 영역을 제거하기 위한 기하학적 보정을 위해 2차 미분 필터 기반의 문서 테두리 검출 방안을 마련하였다. 그리고 적응적 이진화 방법으로 그림자를 제거한 흑백 문서 영상을 생성하였다. 제안한 왜곡 보정 흑백 문서 영상 생성 알고리즘을 스마트 폰 카메라로 촬영한 문서 영상들을 대상으로 실험한 결과 우수한 처리 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.

결합 신경망을 이용한 여권 MRZ 정보 인식 (Recognition of Passport MRZ Information Using Combined Neural Networks)

  • In case of reading passport using a smart phone in contrast with a dedicated passport reading system, MRZ(Machine Readable Zone) character recognition can be hard when the character strokes were broken, touched or blurred according to the lighting condition, and the position and size of MRZ character lines were varied due to the camera distance and angle. In this paper, the effective recognition algorithm of the passport MRZ information using a combined neural network recognizer of CNN(Convolutional Neural Network) and ANN( Artificial Neural Network), is proposed under the various sized and skewed passport images. The MRZ line detection using connected component analysis algorithm and the skew correction using perspective transform algorithm are also designed in order to achieve effective character segmentation results. Each of the MRZ field recognition results is verified by using five check digits for deciding whether retrying the recognition process of passport MRZ information or not. After we implement the proposed recognition algorithm of passport MRZ information, the excellent recognition performance of the passport MRZ information was obtained in the experimental results for PC off-line mode and smart phone on-line mode.
