Bone is a dynamic organ that bone remodeling occurs throughout life and involves the process in which the bone matrix is broken down through resorption by osteoclasts and then built back again through bone formation by osteoblasts. Usually these two processes balance each other and a stable level of bone mass is maintained. We here discuss transcription factors involved in regulating the osteoblast differentiation pathway. Runx2 is a transcription factor which is essential in skeletal development by regulating osteoblast differentiation and chondrocyte maturation. Its companion subunit, Cbf${\beta}$ is needed for an early step in osteoblast differentiation pathway. Whereas Osterix(Osx) is a new identified osteoblast-specific transcription factor which is required for the differentiation of preosteoblasts into more mature and functional osteoblasts. We also discuss other transcription factors, Msx1 and 2, Dlx5 and 6, Twist, and Sp3 that affect skeletal patterning and development. Understanding the characteristics of mice in which these transcription factors are inactivated should help define their role in bone physiology and pathology of bone defects.
Natural actomyosin was extracted from the dorsal muscle of carp (Cyprinus carpio), and some Physico-chemical properties were determined. The sedimentation constant ($s_{20},\;_\omega$) of the purified skeletal muscle actomyosin was about 24.76s and the ATP sensitivity 147-176. The specific viscosity was rapidly ascended with the increase of protein concentration as other vertebrate actomyosins. ATPase activating site under the effect of pH variation was showed on the both sides of acid and base resembling with the tendency of rabbit skeletal muscle actomyosin, and found at 6.0 on the acidic side and at 9.5 on the basic side.
Campomelic dysplasia (CD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by multiple skeletal anomalies and the abnormal development of male reproductive organs. To date, the SOX9 gene is the only known causal gene for CD, and approximately 90 causative mutations in SOX9 have been identified worldwide. CD is diagnosed based on clinical characteristics of skeletal dysplasia (e.g., short bowed long bones, kyphoscoliosis, bell-shaped thoracic cage with 11 pairs of ribs, and hypoplastic scapulars), typical facial features of Pierre Robin sequence with cleft palate, and gonadal dysgenesis in 46,XY individuals. Most patients with CD exhibit life-threatening respiratory failure owing to laryngotracheomalacia and hypoplastic thorax during the neonatal period. Although fatal complications decrease after infancy, several medical conditions continue to require proper management. A better understanding of this rare but lethal condition may lead to more appropriate treatments for patients.
This study was designed to analyse vertical dysplasia such as open bite or deep bite in persons with skeletal Class III malocclusion. The subjects consisted of 60 control patients, 40 Class III open bite patients and 40 Class III deep bite patients. The mean age was 19.8 years in the control group, 17.8 years in the Class III open bite group and 16.5 years in the Class III deep bite group. The results were as follows: 1. In Class III malocclusion patients, the characteristics of the vertical dysplasia are under the palatal plane. 2. In Class III malocclusion patients, the items showing the characteristics of the vertical dysplasia are mandibular plane angle, lower gonial angle, lower facial height, dental height & inclination of the upper first molar, interincisal angle, maxillary & mandibular occlusal plane angle. 3. In Class III malocclusion patients, LPFH/LAFH ratio shows the highest significance among the facial height ratios. 4. In Class III malocclusion patients, open bite group has a upward cant of maxillary occlusal plane & downward cant of mandibular occlusal plane. And deep bite group has a downward cant of maxillary occlusal plane & upward cant of mandibular occlusal plane. 5. In Class III malocclusion patients, the molar teeth of the open bite group are measially inclined and those of the deep bite group are upright.
Purpose : To examine whether the maxillofacial skeletal morphology correlates with the condylar position and the anatomic characteristics of articular eminence using measurements of lateral cephalometric radiographs and individualized sagittal temporomandibular joint (TMJ) tomographs. Materials and Methods : I compared measurements of 202 TMJs of 101 orthodontic patients of Kangnung National University Dental Hospital. 1 used Pearson's correlation for comparison of the measuring values in lateral cephalometric radiographs and individualized sagittal TMJ tomographs. Results : Large occlusal plane angle tendency showed decreased width of posterior eminence slope, decreased depth of articular fossa and decreased posterior slope angle of eminence. Large mandibular plane angle tendency showed decreased superior joint space, decreased depth of articular fossa and decreased posterior slope angle of eminence. Large genial angle tendency showed decreased depth of articular fossa, decreased posterior slope angle of eminence and anterior position of condylar head. Large anterior facial height and large posterior facial height tendency showed increased width of posterior slope of eminence, increased depth of articular fossa, increased posterior slope angle of eminence and posterior position of condylar head. Conclusion : Maxillofacial skeletal morphology has correlation with the anatomic characteristics of TMJ. Individualized sagittal TMJ tomographs can provide useful information for anatomical analysis of TMJ.
This study was performed to verify the craniofacial skeletal characteristics in anterior openbite group, in contrast to normal occlusion group, and also to find out, vertical factors which shows, correlate to the amount of anterior openbite. 21 individuals, including 10 males and 11 females, without orthodontic treatment history and anterior - posterior skeletal malrelationships, were selected and analyzed basic morphology and vertical factors, using standard lateral cephalogram. The obtained results as follows: 1. Comparison of anterior open-bite group with normal occlusion group using Moyers analysis. a) In basis morphologic analysis, Ba-SE-Me was lesser and Ba-SE-Mn. P. and Mn.P/A-B were greater in both sexes of anterior openbite group than in normal occlusion group. b) In angle measurements of vertical analysis, PMV/Pal. P. was lesser in male anterior openbite group and PMV/Occ. P. and PMV/Mn. P. were greater in both sexes of anterior openbite group than in normal occlusion group. c) In height ratio of vertical analysis, ATFH/PTFH and ALFH/ATFH were greater in both sexes of anterior openbite group than in normal occlusion group. 2. The amount of anterior openbite was correlated with PMV/Occ. P. and PMV/Mn. P.
This study was performed to evaluate horizontal and vertical characteristics according to lateral cephalometry of adult Korean skeletal Class II patients using a selected horizontal and vortical reference planes of Koreans. 60 males and 60 females consisting of freshman of Yonsei University from 1996 to 1997 and patients with history of orthognatic surgery at the Dental Hospital of Yonsei University with a skeletal Class II profile were chosen and compared with 70 males and 70 females with normal occlusion. The skeletal Class R group had the following conditions : 1. Profile composed of a retrognathic mandible or protrusive maxilla; 2. Class II molar and canine key; 3. ANB-greater than $4^{\circ}; 4$. Wits appraisal-greater than 1.0mm; Cephalometric analysis consisted of 22 skeletal, 25 soft tissue, 12 dental measurements. The results were as follows. 1. There was no considerable vortical measurement difference between the skeletal Class II malocclusion group and the normal occlusion group in skeletal analysis. But, some variations were found between the two groups in soft tissue analysis. 2. Mandibular length of the skeletal Class II malocclusion group was smaller than that of the normal occlusion group. Mandible was more posteriorly positioned in the Class II malocclusion group than in the normal occlusion group. 3. The length and antero-posterior position of the maxilla were not different between the Class II malocclusion and the normal occlusion group. 4. The antero-posterior position of the nose, upper lip and maxillary soft tissue, and nasolabial angle were not different between the two groups. 5. Mandibular soft tissue of the Class H malocclusion group was more posteriorly positioned than that of the normal. 6. The vertical measurements of the incisors(U1-HP, L1-HP) were bigger in the Class II malocclusion group than in the normal, but those of the molars(U6-HP, U6-MP) showed no significant difference between the two groups. 7 Classifying the skeletal Class II malocclusion group according to the antero-posterior position of both jaws, normally positioned maxilla and retruded mandible was 43.3%, both normally positioned maxilla and mandible 28.3%, both retruded maxilla and mandible 20.0%..
Enlow's counterpart analysis reflects the characteristics of each individual sample to find out the cause of the malocclusion and further applying them to the clinic. Enlow's counterpart analysis was performed on 100 Korean samples (50 male, 50 female) with normal occlusion and 100 skeletal class III patients (50 male, 50 female) scheduled for orthognathic surgery. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The cause of malocclusion in skeletal class III patients were complex and interrelated : backward upward rotation of the cranial base, forward inclination of the ramus, increase in the mandibular body length, and posteriorly located maxilla. 2. Seen on R2 (male-1.68mm, female-2.33mm), in skeletal class III, the maxilla Is mote posteriorly located than the normal group. 3. The cause of malocclusion In skeletal class III patients, consists of retrognathic maxilla(A1) male $22\%$, female $26\%$, prognathic mandible(B1) male $44\%$, female $34\%$, and combination of an retrognathic maxilla and prognathic mandible were male $28\%$, female $38\%$. 4. There was no significant difference in the anterior-posterior length of the maxilla(A4) between skeletal class III males with the normal group, while in the female subjects, the skeletal class m group showed a smaller maxilla(A4) compared to the normal group. 5. In skeletal class III patients the proganthic mandible was primarily caused by the Inclination of the ramus(R3, R4) and mandibular body length(B4, B6) rather than ramus width(B3).
The purpose of this study was to evaluate growth changes and skeletal characteristics of Korean children with Class III malocclusions from 10 to 14 years of skeletal age. Radiographs of 60 children with Class III malocclusion and 60 normal controls were assessed. Both groups were subdivided into 6 samples according to sex and skeletal age. Skeletal age was assessed using handwrist X-rays using the Greulich and Pyle norms. The Krogman-Walker plane (occipitale-maxillon) through Sella was used as a reference plane in this study with x-axis perpendicular to the x-axis. Sir Student t-tests were conducted to compare the control group with the Class III group according to each gender a:nd age. The characteristics of Class III malocclusion group compared to the control group included shorter anterior and posterior cranial base, shorter and retrusive maxilla, forger mandible, increased molar-incisor distance, retroclined lower incisors, labially proclined upper incisors, and anteriorly located mandibular molar, smaller upper and middle facial depth, and larger lower facial depth. Landmarks representing facial depth, size of maxilla and mandible, and their AP relationship including anterior facial height indicate that growth characteristic was determined early in life. But growth Pattern of cranial base and some of the dental landmarks showed progressive divergence between Control and Class III groups with age. The position of the posterior border of the mandible was found to be significantly forward in both females and males by the age of 14 and at the anterior border in males and females at all ages. Hyperdivergent mandibular plane, changes in anterior segment of mandible, small anterior cranial base, and decrease in cranial base flexure was also noted.
