  • This study aims at finding the closest packings of regular shape particles such as sphere, circle rod and hexagonal rod type. As the ratio of particle size to container lowered to less than 1/10, the wall effect decreased gradually. The tap density of spherical particles with almost orthorhombic arrangement was 59.5%, while those of circle rod and hexagonal rod type particles were 63.5% and 63.0% respectively. And it was decreased with increasing the aspect ratio of regular particles. The tap density of binary mixtures was larger than that corresponding to the monosized particles packing by about 15%. The tap density of ternary mixtures was larger than that of corresponding to the packing of binary mixtures by about 9%. This work employed the binary mixture of 60% coarse particles and 40% fine particles with size ratio of 1.0 to 1/10 and the ternary mixture of 60% coarse particles, 20% medium and 20% fine particles with size ratio of 1:1/10:1/400 respectively.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the atomizing characteristics of a two phase spray by using a liquid column type coaxial nozzle. The experiments have been carried out to analyze the atomization behavior, the droplet size distributions, and the statistical properties of droplet size distributions. Immersion sampling method and the image processing technique were adapted for the measurements of particles, and the distributions of the droplet sizes were statistically analyzed. In the experiments, the mass ratio defined as Mr= $M_{\sigma}$/ $M_{1}$ has been changed from 1.0 to 3.4 and the measurements have been performed along the axis of the spray. As a result of this experimental study, the distributions of droplet size were satisfied with the Log-Normal distributions and arithmetic mean diameter and deviation of mass ratio. Droplet volume-surface mean diameter was denoted by a exponential function of mass-ratio and the exponent was denoted by linear relation according to the central axis from the nozzle. Dispersions, skewness factors and flatness factors had comparatively constant values regardless of mass ratio and location.

  • In this study, to fabricate the semi-solid Al alloy, the 3phase-2poles electromagnetic stirring system was adopted. The changes of primary grain size, aspect ratio, standard deviation, hardness and the size morphology of eutectic Si with pouring temperatures and input voltages were investigated. At the same pouring temperature, with increasing input voltage, aspect ratio, standard deviation and primary grain size were decreased. The optimum condition for fabrication of semisolid Al alloys by EMS horizontal continuous casting process was determined that the input voltage was 220V and the pouring temperature was 68$0^{\circ}C$. At this optimum conditions the primary grain size was 54$\mu\textrm{m}$, the aspect ratio was 1.56 and the size of eutectic Si was 0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$. The micro-hardness of the Al alloy was 72.1 Hv. The semi-solid A356 Al alloy which has very low aspect ratio and standard deviation value could be fabricated by adopting the EMS horizontal continuous casting facility that was manufactured for this study.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to analyze the effects of EGR ratio on the combustion, exhaust emissions characteristics and size distributions of particulate matter in a single cylinder diesel engine with common-rail injection system fueled with biodiesel derived from soybean. In order to analyze the combustion, exhaust emissions and measurement of size distributions of particulate matter were carried out under various EGR ratio which was varied from 20~60% and the results were compared to those of results without EGR. The experimental results show that ignition delay was extended and maximum value of rate of heat release (ROHR) was decreased according to increasing of EGR ratio. In addition, oxidies of nitrogen ($NO_x$) emissions were reduced but soot emissions were increased under increasing of EGR ratio. However, under higher EGR ratio region, soot was slightly decreased. And then the particulate size distribution shows that high exhaust gas temperature restrain the formation of soluble organic fraction (SOF) which were beyond the accumulation mode (100~300nm) and lead to increase of nuclei mode particles.

  • In rainy weather, permeable concrete pavement has advantages such as good drainage, increased skid resistance, reduced splash and spray behind vehicles for improving the safety of driving vehicles as well as reduction of the traffic noise. It also contributes to improvement of traffic environment. In this study, the fundamental properties of permeable concrete in accordance with maximum size of aggregate, sand percentage and unit cement content were investigated for practical use of permeable concrete pavement. Although the permeability standard for typical permeable asphalt-concrete pavement is $1{\times}10^{-2}cm/sec$, the researchers determined that the coefficient of permeability of the permeable concrete should be set higher at $1{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$. Then, the researchers measured the coefficient of permeability, strength, void ratio, and continuous void ratio of the permeable concrete while varying maximum size of the aggregate, sand percentage, unit cement content for detailed analysis. It was found that the void ratio, continuous void ratio, and flexural strength were about 15%, 12%, and 5.0MPa, respectively, when the permeability of the concrete was set at $1{\times}10^{-1}cm/sec$. Given that the maximum size of aggregate was $10{\sim}13mm$, we reached the conclusion that the best mix design for permeable concrete was $0{\sim}20%$ of sand percentage and $380kg/m^3$ of unit cement content.

  • In this study, a series of soil concrete mixtures were tested for the compressive strength according to ratio of aggregate to binder, compaction energy, maximum aggregate size, ratio of silica fume to cement, and ratio of water to binder. The optimum mixing ratio of soil concrete mixtures composed of volcaniclastic, cement, silica fume, concrete polymer and water were analysed. The test results for optimum proportion were as follows ; (1)ratio of aggregate to binder was 4 : 1, (2)compaction energy level was level 2, (3)maximum aggregate size was 13 mm, (4)ratio of silica fume to cement was 10%, (5)ratio of water to binder was 25%. Also, dry type construction techniques were applied using the optimum soil concrete mixture. From the results of this study, the compressive strength of soil concrete and construction techniques were suitable for making eco-friendly soil pavement.

  • This paper describes the effect of specimen size on fatigue crack growth rate for the offshore structural high-tensile-strength steel BS4360 and machine structural steel SM45C. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of stress ratio aspect ratio specimen width and specimen thickness of the fatigue crack growth behavior. Compact tension specimens with a LT orientation for BS4360 and SM45C steels were used, All testing was done at constant stress intensity factor range controlled fatigue crack growth condition. The investigation demonstrates that the fatigue crack growth rate is increased with increasing stress ratio and specimen thickness and is decreased with increasing specimen width. The fatigue crack growth rate is unaffected by aspect ratio until a/W=0.50 but is increased by increasing spect ratio from a/W=0.55.

  • The concept of the effective storage ratio has been suggested to determine the size of detention pond by the previous researchers. The 11 pump - pond facilities in Dongdu-chun city were selected to analyze the critical duration for design rainfall and the storage ratio for each rainfall duration in this study It has been then found that the criteria of the maximum storage ratio is not reasonable for determining the size of detention pond because the difference of storage ratio with respect to each rainfall duration is too small. Moreover, since the size of pond compared with the pump capacity is not always big enough, the pump should be frequently operated, which may result in pump failure. Thus, the pond should be sufficiently sized to prevent the possibility of the pump failure due to frequent operation. According to the analyses for changing pump capacity, it has been found that if the function of the pond compared with the pump is concentrated, determining the size of pond based on the storage ratio is operationally feasible for even small basin. Thus, an improved procedure based on the storage ratio for determining the size of detention pond in small basin has been suggested. The results by the proposed procedure considering pump switching frequency may lead to reasonable pump operation. A simple linear programming model has been also adopted to figure out the relationship between pump capacity and pond size. It has been shown that the determination lot the size of detention pond based on conventional hydrologic flood routing in pond is feasible for only urban districts not rural areas.
