In this work, we have employed the strain gradient plasticity theory to investigate the effect of material size on the deformation behavior in metal forming process. Flow stress is expressed in terms of strain, strain gradient (spatial derivative of strain) and intrinsic material length. The least square method coupled with strain gradient plasticity was used to calculate the components of strain gradient at each element of material. For demonstrating the size effect, the proposed approach has been applied to plane compression process and micro rolling process. Results show when the characteristic length of the material comes to the intrinsic material length, the effect of strain gradient is noteworthy. For the microcompression, the additional work hardening at higher strain gradient regions results in uniform distribution of strain. In the case of micro-rolling, the strain gradient is remarkable at the exit section where the actual reduction of the rolling finishes and subsequently strong work hardening take places at the section. This results in a considerable increase in rolling force. Rolling force with the strain gradient plasticity considered in analysis increases by 20% compared to that with conventional plasticity theory.
This study aims to investigate the impacts of managerial and technical IT knowledges on firm's financial performance. Specifically, the study examines the following three effects between IT personnel knowledges and financial performance: (1) direct effect, (2) mediating effect of business process performance, and (3) moderating effect of firm size, between them. An empirical study resulted in the followings. First, both managerial and technical IT knowledges do not have direct influences on financial performance. Second, unlike technical IT knowledge, managerial IT knowledge indirectly affects financial performance through business process performance, confirming the mediating role of business process performance. Third, while technical IT knowledge produce no direct and indirect effect on financial performance regardless of firm size, managerial IT knowledge exerts significant impacts on financial performance although such effects represent some different patterns according to firm size. That is, in the smaller group, the association between managerial IT knowledge and financial performance is partially mediated by business process performance and in the larger group, that relationship fully mediated.

The size effect on fracture toughness was investigated by introducing $J-A_2$ theory. For this application, small size specimens were chosen to establish $J-A_2$ assessment curve with FEM analysis. Two-dimensional FEM analysis was conducted with plane strain model using ABAQUS by domain integral method to calculate both crack tip stress and fracture toughness which were used to establish $J-A_2$ curve. The assessment curve predicted the fracture toughness of large specimens very well when compared to the test values. The results showed good prediction for deep crack specimen, though there were acceptable deviations in shallow cracked specimens, presumably caused by constraint effect. When the curve applied to reactor vessel in order to predict end of life fracture toughness with assumption of on-power pressure test condition, it provided the reasonable pressure compared to the existing design value. Better predictions would be possible if more test data were available.

This pioneer study investigates the size effect on the compressive and tensile strengths of fiber-reinforced self-compacting concrete (FR-SCC) with different specimens, before and after exposure to elevated temperatures. 432 self-compacting concrete (SCC) specimens with two concrete grades (50 and 80MPa) and three steel fiber ratios (0%, 0.5% and 1%) were prepared and tested. Moreover, based on the experimental results, new formulations were proposed to predict the residual strengths for different specimens. A parametric study was also carried out to investigate the accuracy of proposed formulations. Residual strength results showed that the cylinder specimen with dimensions of $100{\times}200mm$ was the most affected, while the cube with a size of 100 mm maintained a constant difference with the standard cylinder ($150{\times}300mm$). Temperature effect on the cube specimen (150 mm) was the least in comparison to other specimen sizes and types. In general, provision of steel fibers in SCC mixtures resulted in a reduction in temperature effect on the variance of a conversion factor. Parametric study results confirm that the proposed numerical models are safe to be used for all types of SCC specimens.
Nanocrystallne WO3 and MoO3 with several different sizes and crystal structures were prepared by simple acid precipitation and subsequent heat treatment. The photochromic (PC) properties of these samples were comparatively investigated in powder state by monitoring diffuse reflectance spectral changes after bandgap irradiation. The PC effect of hexagonal WO3 and monoclinic WO3 strongly depended upon crystallite size rather than crystal structure. The smaller the crystallite size, the better the PC effect. However, orthorhombic WO·H2O and MoO3 having hexagonal and orthorhombic structures did not follow this trend. One consistent result for all WO3 and MoO3 samples is that the heat treatment in air, which changes crystallinity, whether it changes the crystal structure or only the crystallite size, reduces the PC effect. Since the thermal treatment reduces the surface oxygen defect sites, we believe that the PC effect of WO3 and MoO3 depends critically on the surface oxygen defect sites that serve as deep trap sites for photogenerated electrons and oxygen radical holes. We also found that the proton insertion claimed by double charge injection model is not critical for the PC effect.
Background: We are developing a small size dosimeter for dose estimation in particle therapies. The developed dosimeter is an optical fiber based dosimeter mounting an radiation induced luminescence material, such as an OSL or a scintillator, at a tip. These materials generally suffer from the quenching effect under high LET particle irradiation. Materials and Methods: We fabricated two types of the small size dosimeters. They used an OSL material Eu:BaFBr and a BGO scintillator. Carbon ions were irradiated into the fabricated dosimeters at Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). The small size dosimeters were set behind the water equivalent acrylic phantom. Bragg peak was observed by changing the phantom thickness. An ion chamber was also placed near the small size dosimeters as a reference. Results and Discussion: Eu:BaFBr and BGO dosimeters showed a Bragg peak at the same thickness as the ion chamber. Under high LET particle irradiation, the response of the luminescence-based small size dosimeters deteriorated compared with that of the ion chamber due to the quenching effect. We confirmed the luminescence efficiency of Eu:BaFBr and BGO decrease with the LET. The reduction coefficient of luminescence efficiency was different between the BGO and the Eu:BaFBr. The LET can be determined from the luminescence ratio between Eu:BaFBr and BGO, and the dosimeter response can be corrected. Conclusion: We evaluated the LET dependence of the luminescence efficiency of the BGO and Eu:BaFBr as the quenching effect. We propose and discuss the correction of the quenching effect using the signal intensity ratio of the both materials. Although the correction precision is not sufficient, feasibility of the proposed correction method is proved through basic experiments.

Since the monolithic ceramic substrate was in introduced for automotive catalytic converters, the durability of the substrate has been a continuing requirement to reduce the emission, gas of vehicle. The substrate can occupy a volume as small as 82 $cm^3$ and as large as 8200 $cm^3$ to provide the required substrate for catalytic activity. The long-term durability varies with the size of the substrate from manufacture's point of view. Therefore this study presents that the response surface model using central composite design can explain size effect on the modulus of rupture in a cordierite ceramic monolithic substrate.
Concrete is a composite material and at meso-level, may be assumed to be composed of three phases: aggregate, mortar-matrix and aggregate-matrix interface. It is postulated herein that although non-linear material parameters are generally used to model this composite structure by finite element method, linear elastic fracture mechanics principles can be used for modelling at the meso level, if the properties of all three phases are known. For this reason, a novel meso-mechanical approach for concrete fracture which uses the composite material model with distributed-phase for elastic properties of phases and considers the size effect according to linear elastic fracture mechanics for strength properties of phases is presented in this paper. Consequently, the developed model needs two parameters such as compressive strength and maximum grain size of concrete. The model is applied to three most popular fracture mechanics approaches for concrete namely the two-parameter model, the effective crack model and the size effect model. It is concluded that the developed model well agrees with considered approaches.

Presented are the results of recent tests on diagonal shear failure of reinforced concrete beams which are externally reinforced in the transverse direction by a unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced polymer, instead of the traditional steel stirrups. Three different series of the beams with different shear reinforcements, i.e. U-wrapping with carbon sheet, U-wrapping with carbon strips and full wrapping with carbon strips were tested. Those beams were geometrically similar, and the size range is 1:1.9:4. The failure of the beams are characterized by delamination, crushing of concrete and distributed shear cracks. It is found that the size effect is much weaker than that of the reference beams without CFRP. Therefore CFRP sheet may be used as the transverse reinforcement with a minor size effect. However, it is not clear that the same conclusion can be drawn in other sizes. Further researches are recommended.
