  • This study was carried out to investigate the flora and vegetation of Yokjido Island in Tongyeong-si, Korea. Vascular plants collected six times (from March of 2015 to January of 2016) were identified as 547 taxa in total, including 113 families, 354 genera, 487 species, four subspecies, 50 varieties, four forms and two hybrids. The first records from this region contained 314 taxa. In the flora of this area, endemic Korean species numbered eight taxa, and the red list of vascular plants according to the IUCN valuation basis numbered six taxa. In addition, 86 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants specially designated by the Ministry of Environment are included. Among the species investigated in this survey, 99 taxa were identified as specific species bio-geographically as compared floras of other terrestrial regions; 97 taxa of plants in southern areas and two taxa of limited distribution plants on the Korean Peninsula. In all, 74 naturalized plants were recorded in the investigated area. Samples of the forest vegetation of Yokjido Island were mainly classified as Pinus thunbergii community and the Alus firma community. Vertical structures of the communities were stable, and a DBH-class analysis showed that the dominant tree species would be maintained. If disturbance factors such as thinning could be halted, the composition of woody species and herbaceous species would change.

  • The present study investigated the effect of global warming on germination and initial growth across six deciduous oak species (Quercus mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. serrata, Q. dentata, Q. aliena, and Q. acutissima), which are the dominant tree species in Korea forest ecosystems. Seeds were sown in climate change treatments, with temperatures higher than those of the control (approximately 3.0℃ higher), and CO2 concentrations higher than those of the control (approximately 2-fold higher). Initial growth in each species was measured every two weeks. Initial growth was more rapid in all oak species at the time of root and shoot emergence under high temperature and CO2 treatments than in the control group. Leaf emergence in Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, and Q. serrata occurred earlier under the climate change treatments than under the control. Root length increased significantly in Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, and Q. dentata under the climate change treatments when compared to under the control. However, Q. aliena and Q. serrata exhibited a contrasting trends, and no significant difference was observed between the species and Q. acutissima. Shoot length increased significantly in Q. aliena under climate change treatments when compared to under the control but decreased in Q. aliena. In addition, no significant difference was observed in shoot length among Q. mongolica, Q. dentata, and Q. acutissima. The results showed that climate change treatments facilitated early growth, rapid emergence from the ground, leaf development, and enhanced belowground growth in Q. mongolica. Conversely, Q. aliena exhibited the lowest aboveground and belowground growth under climate change treatments when compared to other oak species. Climate change treatments had the least impact on Q. acutissima considering the insignificant differences observed in initial growth rates under climate change treatment.

  • This study examined hwangbek dyeability for cotton, silk, and wool from different tree species and origin as well as their berberine and palmatine content. A total of 12 different hwangbek were examined, six purchased directly from different locations of China and six purchased from the Seoul Medicine Market. Hwangbek purchased from China were 3 Kwanhwangbek (Phellodendron amurense Rupr.) from Jilin, Liaoning, Heilongjiang and 3 Chunhwangbek (Phellodendron chinense Schneid.) from Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guangxi. Hwangbek purchased from the Seoul Medicine Market included 3 hwangbek that originated from Korea and 3 hwangbek imported from China. We extracted 2.5g of each hwangbek into 500mL of water for 60 min at $80^{\circ}C$. Dyeing was conducted using the IR dyeing machine for 30min at $55^{\circ}C$ using a 1:100 liquor ratio. Cotton was mordanted using tannic acid followed by potassium antimonyl tartrate trihydrate treatment before dyeing. Berberine and palmatine pigments in hwangbek were identified with the HPLC-DAD-MS instrument and the amount of pigment was quantified using an ion chromatogram. The results indicated that the K/S values of dyed fabrics were highly related to the amount of pigment in hwangbek used for dyeing.

  • Genetic relationships among six species of the genus Rana from Korea were investigated by complete nucleotide sequence analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1143 bp). Based on Kimura-2-parameter distance, the interspecific sequence differences of cytochrome b gene within the genus Rana were ranged from 7.83% to 25.00%. The genetic distances were 7.83% between R. nigromaculata and R. plancyi, 8.47% between two types of R. rugosa (type A and B), 10.42% between the brown frogs (R. amurensis and R. dybowskii), 16.11% between R. dybowskii types 1 and 2 and 12.36% between pond frogs (R. nigromaculata and R. plancyi) and R. catesbeiana. In the neighbor-joining and parsimony trees, R. catesbeiana was more closely related to pond frogs than brown frogs. R. dybowskii types 1 and 2 were considered to be at a distinct and specific level of differentiation (16.11%), while two types of R. rugosa were suspected to be at a subspecific level (8.47%).

As a part of studies on taxonomy and phylogeny of bats inhabiting Korea, a taxonomic review of one rhinolophid and six vespertilionid bats collected at 18 localities during the period from October 1985 to July 1987 was carried out, basing on the external, cranial, dental and humeral morphology. These bats include a rare species, Eptesicus serotinus brachydigitus, the detailed characters of which were described in addition to the original description by Mori (1928b). Further, the Korean microchiropteran faunal succession was described laking into consideration the recent chiropteran fauna, and climatic and geographical changes in the Pleistocene: the recent bat fauna of Korea has become abundant in the north-originating species rather than in the south-originating ones, which is a reverse tendency in the Palearctic continent.

  • Twenty-five species of fungi were deleted and identified from 27 kinds of the intercepted seeds from 5 countries. Eight species of fungi including Fusariun moniliforme were detected from the imported calabash seed (Lagenaria siceraria). These seeds were the most contaminated among the intercepted reeds tested. Six kinds of seeds including larch(Larix kaemferi) were disinfected with Vitathiram, Benlate-T and Captan. Rhynchosporium was detected from seeds treated with Vitathiram whereas Alternaria spp. were detected from seeds treated with Benlate T or Captan. Six genera of fungi were detected from the untreated seeds. In the case of germination, it seem that seed disinfectants do not have any damage on germination of seed.

  • Four external and 22 cranial characters of 279 specimens representing 24 species of six orders of Korean mammals were measured. The data were analyzed by phenetic methods such as ordination as well as clustering techniques. Morphological distances were also calculated. Phenetic studies yield taxonomic placements of Siberian mink, Palearetic squirrel, and big white-toothed shrew which are incorrect. Morphological differences among Korean mammals at ordinal level in the taxonomic hierarchy are larger than those among other mammals: morphological differences below ordinal level are comparable to those among other mammals. Average taxonomic distances and morphological differences among Korean mammals at various levels in the taxonomic hierarchy are jointly monotonic, although the value of Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient between average taxonomic distance matrix and morphological difference marrix is 0.59.

  • Freshwater ecosystems provide a complex environment for microorganisms. In this study, we isolated diverse fungal strains from plant litter in freshwaters. These strains were identified using molecular phylogenetic analyses of rDNA and/or other gene sequences (TUB, GAPDH, and EF1). In addition, we examined their morphological characteristics by microscopy and cultural characteristics on several media. We identified six previously unrecorded Sordariomycetes species in Korea, i.e., Colletotrichum godetiae, Discosia rubi, Robillarda sessilis, Monochaetia dimorphospora, Idriella lunata, and Phialemoniopsis endophytica. Of these, D. rubi and M. dimorphospora exhibited high extracellular amylase, lipase, and protease activities, suggesting that these fungal isolates might play an important role as decomposers in freshwater ecosystems. Plant litter could thus be a good source for isolating and investigating previously undocumented fungal species in freshwater environments.

  • Six smittinid species were identified from Korean waters. Two of which were previously recorded in the Korean bryozoan fauna are reviewed. Parasmittina raigii (Audouin, 1826) reported from Gwabutan, Jeju Island is re-examined and reidentified as Parasmittina serrula Soule and Soule, 1973, which is new to the Korean fauna. Smittoidea reticulato (MacGillivray, 1847) is reported as species which doesn't occur in the Pacific Ocean Accordingly, Smittoidea reticulata should be deleted from the Korean bryozoan fauna and the Korean specimen identified as Smittoidea reticulata is synonymous with Smittoidea pacifica Soule and Soule, 1973. Fourteen smittinid bryozoans from Korea are thus recorded so far.
