  • Six echinoderm species were added to the echinoderm fauna of Dokdo, Korea based on the samples collected form inter - and subtidal areas of the Island on spring and autumn twice a year from 2002 to 2004. As result, sixteen echinoderm species were recorded from Dokdo.

  • Taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of firefly in Japan have been reviewed. Fourty-six lampyrid species and one rhagophthalmid are distributed in the Japanese Islands including the Ryukyus. Recently, molecular phylogenetic approaches have been employed in the systematic study of firefly using mitochondrial and luciferase genes. Based on the molecular phylogenetic trees, evolutionary process of flashing patterns related strictly to mating behavior was estimated. Furthermore, genetic diversity studies revealed geographic differentiation patterns within species, and conservation measures of firefly were proposed to protect genetic resources endemic to the localities.

  • This study on the five families (Anamixidae, Colomastigidae, Eophliantidae, Eusiridae, and Hyalidae) of fammaridean amphipods of Ulreung Island was based on the materials collected at eight localities in Ulreung Island. Nine speices of seven genera were identified. Of these, three (Paranamixis denticulus, Colomastix prionotos, and Hyale bisaeta) were new to science. Three species (Ceinina japonica, Eusiroides monoculoides japonicus, and Allorchestes angusta) were new recordsfor Korean waters. These six species were descirbed with illustrations.

  • The cumacean fauna currently contains more than 1200 species worldwide (Wafting, 1997). Many of the habitats where cumaceans are likely to be found, such as estuaries, shallow embayments, beaches, tidal flats, and the inner continental shelf, have not yet had their cumacean fauna documented (Watling, 1997). UNRECORDED MARINE ALGAE FROM KOREA IV

  • Six species of marine algae new to Korea are described. Among them, five species belong to the Rhodophyta: Calaxaura clavigera Kjellman, G. hystpix Kjellman, Chrysymenia grandis Okamura, Delisea okadai (Yamada) Chihara et Yoshizaki and Webrella micans Hauftfleisch, and one to Phaeophyta: Saundersella saxicola Inagaki. Chrysymenia grandis and Delisea okadai are collected on the seashore after heavy storm, while the other four are from the upper part of sublittoral zone.

  • While examining specimens collected in the shallow waters of Korea from 1995 to 2004, we found that Ampelisca bocki Dahl and A. naikaiensis Nagata were newly added to Korean fauna. We also provide description for A. brevicornis (Costa) based on materials collected from Korea. As a result, six species of Ampelisca are reported in Korea.

  • As a result of continuous taxonomic study on crabs, Clistocoeloma villosum (A. Milne-Edwards, 1869) is newly reported from Korean waters. C. villosum has no epibranchial tooth on the carapace, while C. merguiense De Man, 1888, only recorded species of this genus in Korean fauna, has two epibranchial teeth. The description and illustrations of C. villosum are provided herein. Korean Sesarmid crabs now consist of 10 species belonging to six genera.

Radiation effect on the corrosion of disposal canister materials

  • The effects of radiation on the corrosion of canister materials were investigated for the reliable disposal of high-level radioactive waste. The test specimens were gamma-irradiated at a very low dose rate of approximately 0.1 Gy/h for six and twelve months. The copper and cast iron species were less corroded when irradiated. It is hypothesized that gamma rays suppress the formation of lower-enthalpy species like metal oxides and activate reductive reactions. In contrast, it was difficult to evaluate the effect of radiation on the corrosion of titanium and stainless steel.

Potential impact of climate change on the species richness of subalpine plant species in the mountain national parks of South Korea

  • Background: Subalpine ecosystems at high altitudes and latitudes are particularly sensitive to climate change. In South Korea, the prediction of the species richness of subalpine plant species under future climate change is not well studied. Thus, this study aims to assess the potential impact of climate change on species richness of subalpine plant species (14 species) in the 17 mountain national parks (MNPs) of South Korea under climate change scenarios' representative concentration pathways (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 using maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and Migclim for the years 2050 and 2070. Results: Altogether, 723 species occurrence points of 14 species and six selected variables were used in modeling. The models developed for all species showed excellent performance (AUC > 0.89 and TSS > 0.70). The results predicted a significant loss of species richness in all MNPs. Under RCP 4.5, the range of reduction was predicted to be 15.38-94.02% by 2050 and 21.42-96.64% by 2070. Similarly, under RCP 8.5, it will decline 15.38-97.9% by 2050 and 23.07-100% by 2070. The reduction was relatively high in the MNPs located in the central regions (Songnisan and Gyeryongsan), eastern region (Juwangsan), and southern regions (Mudeungsan, Wolchulsan, Hallasan, and Jirisan) compared to the northern and northeastern regions (Odaesan, Seoraksan, Chiaksan, and Taebaeksan). Conclusions: This result indicates that the MNPs at low altitudes and latitudes have a large effect on the climate change in subalpine plant species. This study suggested that subalpine species are highly threatened due to climate change and that immediate actions are required to conserve subalpine species and to minimize the effect of climate change.

The diverse species of the genus Hantzschia (Bacillariophyta) in sand flats of the Nakdong River estuary in Korea

  • To collect the diatom species belonging to the genus Hantzschia, bottom sediments were collected from 32 sampling sites in 23 sand-flat areas in the intertidal zone and river reaches of Nakdong River estuary, Korea. The sand sediments contained a total of 19 species of genus Hantzschia, Hantzschia amphioxys (Ehrenberg) Grunow, H. amphioxys f. capitata O. Muller, H. baltica Simonsen, H. distinctepunctata (Hustedt) Hustedt, H. elegantula (Østrup) Witkowski et al., H. longiareolata Garcia-Baptista, H. marina (Donkin) Grunow, H. pseudomarina Hustedt, H. virgata (Roper) Grunow, H. virgata var. gracilis Hustedt, H. virgata var. kariana Grunow, H. virgata var. leptocephala Østrup and H. weyprechtii Grunow, including six unconfirmed species. Eleven Hantzschia species are reported as new to Korea. Hantzschia virgata, its infraspecies, and neighboring speceis showed large morphological variations within a single species or among the closely related species. Hantzschia amphioxys, H. distinctepunctata, and H. virgata var. leptocephala prefer freshwater habitats in the upper reaches of the river, while others occurred mainly in the sand flats composed of coarse sand in the intertidal area. In the estuarine sediments, the Hantzschia taxa are classified to be typical sand-attached forms.
