This paper addresses uncertainty issues encountered recently in measuring head vibration using the conventional 6-axis or 9-axis bite-bar Those conventional bite-bars are shown to present insufficient information to measure a complete 6 degree-of-freedom motion of head vibration. In order to overcome such limit, a theoretical measurement model that consists of four 3-axis linear accelerometers is suggested (Theoretical backgrounds presented in this paper shall have been addressed in the international congress of ICA 2004 in this April). It is shown to enable the direct measurement of three angular acceleration components and six angular velocity-dependent nonlinear terms. In audition to the three linear acceleration terms, those nine angular motion-dependent ones are found to make it possible to evaluate the general head vibration for a given position. To examine the feasibility of the proposed method, a newly designed 12-axis bite-bar was developed. Detailed experimental results obtained using the developed 12-axis bite-bar are illustrated in the presentation of this paper, which illustrates what amount of measurement accuracy provides. But, this paper provides more detailed experimental data and extended uncertainty factors.
Overhead sign support structures number in the tens of thousands throughout the trunk-line roadways in the United States. A recent two-phase study sponsored by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program resulted in the most significant changes to the AASHTO design specifications for sign support structures to date. The driving factor for these substantial changes was fatigue related cracks and some recent failures. This paper presents the method and results of a subsequent study sponsored by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to develop a relative performance-based procedure to rank overhead sign support structures around the United States based on a linear combination of their expected fatigue life and an approximate measure of cost. This was accomplished by coupling a random vibrations approach with six degree-of-freedom linear dynamic models for fatigue life estimation. Approximate cost was modeled as the product of the steel weight and a constructability factor. An objective function was developed and used to rank selected steel sign support structures from around the country with the goal of maximizing the objective function. Although a purely relative approach, the ranking procedure was found to be efficient and provided the decision support necessary to MDOT.
This paper describes the design and simulation of a multivariable optimal control system for the combined speed, heading and depth control of a Semi-Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (SAUV) developed in Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KRODI). The SAUV is a test-bed for the evaluation of the navigation and manipulator technologies developed for a mine disposal vehicle (MDV) in military use and for a light working underwater vehicle in scientific use. The vehicle was designed to control its cruising speed, heading and depth with 4 horizontal thrusters installed at the rear of the hull. Therefore, the decoupled control methods are limited to apply to the SAUV because the thrust forces are highly coupled with the surging, yawing, and pitching motion of the vehicle. The multivariable Linear Quadratic (LQ) control method is chosen to control steering and diving in variable speed motion automatically. A series of simulation is carried out with fully nonlinear six degree of freedom dynamic model to validate the controller.

An integrated system composed of guidance, navigation and control (GNC) system for autonomous proximity operations and the docking of two spacecraft was developed. The position maneuvers were determined through the integration of the state-dependent Riccati equation formulated from nonlinear relative motion dynamics and relative navigation using rendezvous laser vision (Lidar) and a vision sensor system. In the vision sensor system, a switch between sensors was made along the approach phase in order to provide continuously effective navigation. As an extension of the rendezvous laser vision system, an automated terminal guidance scheme based on the Clohessy-Wiltshire state transition matrix was used to formulate a "V-bar hopping approach" reference trajectory. A proximity operations strategy was then adapted from the approach strategy used with the automated transfer vehicle. The attitude maneuvers, determined from a linear quadratic Gaussian-type control including quaternion based attitude estimation using star trackers or a vision sensor system, provided precise attitude control and robustness under uncertainties in the moments of inertia and external disturbances. These functions were then integrated into an autonomous GNC system that can perform proximity operations and meet all conditions for successful docking. A six-degree of freedom simulation was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the integrated system.
In this paper, a method for estimation of external force on an end-effector using joint torque sensor is proposed. The method is based on portion of measure torque caused by external force. Due to noise in the torque measurement data from the torque sensor, a recursive least-square estimation algorithm is used to ensure a smoother estimation of the external force data. However it is inevitable to create a delay for the sensor to detect the external force. In order to reduce the delay, modified recursive least-square is proposed. The performance of the proposed estimation method is evaluated in an experiment on a developed six-degree-of-freedom robot. By using NI DAQ device and Labview, the robot control, data acquisition and The experimental results output are processed in real time. By using proposed modified RLS, the delay to estimate the external force with the RLS is reduced by 54.9%. As an experimental result, the difference of the actual external force and the estimated external force is 4.11% with an included angle of $5.04^{\circ}$ while in dynamic state. This result shows that this method allows joint torque sensors to be used instead of commonly used external sensory system such as F/T sensors.
Parallel Kinematic Mechanism (PKM) is a device to perform the various motion in three-dimensional space and it calls for six degree of freedom. For example, Parallel Kinematic Mechanism is applied to machine tools, medical equipments, MEMS, virtual reality devices and flight motion simulators. Recently, many companies have tried to develop new Parallel Kinematic Mechanism in order to improve the cycle time and the precisional tolerance. Parallel Kinematic Mechanism uses general universal joint and spherical joint, but such joints have accumulated tolerance problems. Therefore, it causes position control problem and dramatically life time reduction. This paper focused on the rolling element to improve sliding precision in new sliding ball joint development. Before the final design and production, it was confirmed that new sliding ball joint held a higher load and a good geometrical structure. FEM analysis showed a favorable agreement with tensile and compressive testing results by universal testing machine. In conclusions, a new sliding ball joint has been developed to solve a problem of accumulated tolerance and verified using tensile and compressive testing as well as FEM analysis.

In this paper, we assessed muscular activities of lower limbs and foot pressure for car and bus drivers according to operating three electronic pedals that we developed. To analyze drivers' physical exhaustion, muscular fatigue of lower limbs was evaluated. Eleven car drivers and six urban bus drivers were participated in this experiment. The virtual driving system was used for the real driving environment. The virtual driving system was comprised of a spring seat, a steering wheel, pedals (clutch, excel and brake pedals), a manual transmission and a virtual driving simulation. For the real vibration like situation on the road, six degree of freedom motion base system was used. Measured muscles were rectus femoris (RF), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA) and gastrocnemius (Gn) muscles. For the quantitative muscular activities, integrated electromyography (IEMG) was analyzed. Muscular fatigues also were analyzed through the analysis of the median frequency. In addition, foot pressures were analyzed and compared through the peak and averaged pressure during the operating three developed electronic pedals. The experiments are conducted with total 17 drivers, 11 general public and 6 drivers. As a result of the analysis, electromyogram and fatigue analysis through intermediate frequency reduction for pedal-1 more efficient than other pedals. And foot pressure also was decreased. Consequently, we suggested the most efficient pedal and method to minimize the amount of cumulative fatigue.
