A new theoretical model on rain-wind induced vibration (RWIV) of a continuous stay cable is developed in this paper. Different from the existing theoretical analyses in which the cable was modeled as a segmental rigid element, the proposed scheme focuses on the in-plane and out-of-plane responses of a continuous stay cable, which is identical with the prototype cable on cable-stayed bridge. In order to simplify the complexities, the motion law of the rivulet on the cable surface is assumed as a sinusoidal way according to some results obtained from wind tunnel tests. Quasi-steady theory is utilized to determine the aerodynamic forces on the cable. Equations of motion of the cable are derived in a Cartesian Coordinate System and solved by using finite difference method to obtain the in-plane and out-of-plane responses of the cable. The results show that limited cable amplitudes are achieved within a limited range of wind velocity, which is a unique characteristic of RWIV of stay cable. It appears that the in-plane cable amplitude is much larger than the out-of-plane cable amplitude. Rivulet frequency, rivulet distribution along cable axis, and mean wind velocity profile, all have significant effects on the RWIV responses of the prototype stay cable. The effects of damping ratio on RWIVs of stay cables are carefully investigated, which suggests that damping ratio of 1% is needed to well mitigate RWIVs of prototype stay cables.

In this article, the vibration behavior of double-bonded sandwich microplates with homogeneous core and nanocomposite facesheets reinforced by carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube under multi physical fields such as 2D magnetic and electric fields is investigated. Symmetric and un-symmetric distributions of nanotubes are considered for facesheets of sandwich microplates such as uniform distribution and various functionally graded distributions. The double-bonded sandwich microplates rest on visco-Pasternak foundation. Material properties of sandwich microplates are obtained by the extended rule of mixture. The sinusoidal shear deformation theory (SSDT) is employed to describe displacement fields of sandwich microplates. Also, the dimensionless natural frequency is obtained by classical plate theory (CPT) and compared with the obtained results by SSDT. It can be seen that the obtained dimensionless natural frequencies by CPT are higher than SSDT. In order to study the material length scale parameters, modified strain gradient theory at micro scale is utilized and then, the equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle. The effects of different parameters such as foundation parameters including Winkler, shear layer and damping coefficients, various distributions and volume fraction of nanotubes, core to facesheet thickness ratio, aspect and side ratios on the dimensionless natural frequencies are discussed in details. The results of present work can be used to optimum design and control of similar systems such as micro-electro-mechanical and nano-electro-mechanical devices.

A three-dimensional(3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of thick, circular rings with isosceles trapezoidal and triangular cross-sections. Displacement components u/sub s/, u/sub z/, and u/sub θin the meridional, normal, and circumferential directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in θ, and algebraic polynomials in the ψ and z directions. Potential(strain) and kinetic energies of the circular ring are formulated, and upper bound values of the frequencies we obtained by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Novel numerical results are presented for the circular rings with isosceles trapezoidal and equilateral triangular cross-sections having completely free boundaries. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of the rings. The method is applicable to thin rings, as well as thick and very thick ones.
The free vibration of temperature-dependent functionally graded plates (FGPs) resting on a viscoelastic foundation is investigated in this paper using a newly developed simple first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Unlike other first order shear deformation (FSDT) theories, the proposed model contains only four variables' unknowns in which the transverse shear stress and strain follow a parabolic distribution along the plates' thickness, and they vanish at the top and bottom surfaces of the plate by considering a new shape function. For this reason, the present theory requires no shear correction factor. Linear steady-state thermal loads and power-law material properties are supposed to be graded across the plate's thickness. Uniform, linear, non-linear, and sinusoidal thermal rises are applied at the two surfaces for simply supported FGP. Hamilton's principle and Navier's approach are utilized to develop motion equations and analytical solutions. The developed theory shows progress in predicting the frequencies of temperature-dependent FGP. Numerical research is conducted to explain the effect of the power law index, temperature fields, and damping coefficient on the dynamic behavior of temperature-dependent FGPs. It can be concluded that the equation and transformation of the proposed model are as simple as the FSDT.

Long-span bridges are flexible structures with low natural frequencies and damping ratios, making them susceptible to vibrational serviceability problems. However, the current design guideline of South Korea assumes a uniform threshold of wind speed or vibrational amplitude to assess the occurrence of harmful vibrations, potentially overlooking the complex vibrational patterns observed in long-span bridges. In this study, we propose a pointwise vortex-induced vibration (VIV) detection method using a deep-learning-based signalsegmentation model. Departing from conventional supervised methods of data acquisition and manual labeling, we synthesize training data by generating sinusoidal waves with an envelope to accurately represent VIV. A Fourier synchrosqueezed transform is leveraged to extract time-frequency features, which serve as input data for training a bidirectional long short-term memory model. The effectiveness of the model trained on synthetic VIV data is demonstrated through a comparison with its counterpart trained on manually labeled real datasets from an actual cable-supported bridge.

This paper suggests an analytical approach to investigate the free vibration and stability of functionally graded (FG) beams with both perfect and imperfect characteristics using a quasi-3D higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) with stretching effect. The study specifically focuses on FG beams resting on variable elastic foundations. In contrast to other shear deformation theories, this particular theory employs only four unknown functions instead of five. Moreover, this theory satisfies the boundary conditions of zero tension on the beam surfaces and facilitates hyperbolic distributions of transverse shear stresses without the necessity of shear correction factors. The elastic medium in consideration assumes the presence of two parameters, specifically Winkler-Pasternak foundations. The Winkler parameter exhibits variable variations in the longitudinal direction, including linear, parabolic, sinusoidal, cosine, exponential, and uniform, while the Pasternak parameter remains constant. The effective material characteristics of the functionally graded (FG) beam are assumed to follow a straightforward power-law distribution along the thickness direction. Additionally, the investigation of porosity includes the consideration of four different types of porosity distribution patterns, allowing for a comprehensive examination of its influence on the behavior of the beam. Using the virtual work principle, equations of motion are derived and solved analytically using Navier's method for simply supported FG beams. The accuracy is verified through comparisons with literature results. Parametric studies explore the impact of different parameters on free vibration and buckling behavior, demonstrating the theory's correctness and simplicity.
A mathematical model was proposed to analyze the vibration of diaphragm, such as the contact lenses fitted on the eyes, being subjected to the external sinusoidal pressure. The model incorporates the differential equations and their numerical solution program, based on the wave equations. Turbo-C and graphic software, formulated to describe the dependence of the various parameters involved in the vibration. The model predicts the radial distribution of amplitude, frequency dependence of both average displacement amplitude and the power of diaphragm whose edge is being either simply supported or rigidly clamped in vibration. The effect of variables such as thickness, radius, damping coefficients on the vibration characteristics was illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. As the frequency of driving pressure increases above the certain value determined by the boundary conditions and parameters the wave shape or pattern changes from simple arc to belly or loops having double antinode. It seems that the effect of outer antinode progressively increases as the frequency increases. If this kind of phenomena occurs to the contact lens on the cornea in vivo, it may cause an abnormal correction power in the lenses or pull off the eye due the increased rise of outer part of the lens.

The filtered-x LMS (FX-LMS) algorithm has been applied to the active noise control (ANC) system in an acoustic duct. This algorithm is designed based on the FIR (finite impulse response) filter, but it has a slow convergence problem because of a large number of zero coefficients. In order to improve the convergence performance, the step size of the LMS algorithm was modified from fixed to variable. However, this algorithm is still not suitable for the ANC system of a short acoustic duct since the reference signal is affected by the backward acoustic wave propagated from a secondary source. Therefore, the recursive filteredu LMS algorithm (FU-LMS) based on infinite impulse response (IIR) is developed by considering the backward acoustic propagation. This algorithm, unfortunately, generally has a stability problem. The stability problem was improved by using an error smoothing filter. In this paper, the recursive LMS algorithm with variable step size and smoothing error filter is designed. This recursive LMS algorithm, called FU-VSSLMS algorithm, uses an IIR filter. With fast convergence and good stability, this algorithm is suitable for the ANC system in a short acoustic duct such as the intake system of an automotive. This algorithm is applied to the ANC system of a short acoustic duct. The disturbance signals used as primary noise source are a sinusoidal signal embedded in white noise and the chirp signal of which the instantaneous frequency is variable. Test results demonstrate that the FU-VSSLMS algorithm has superior convergence performance to the FX-LMS algorithm and FX-LMS algorithm. It is successfully applied to the ANC system in a short duct.
Differential equations and its numerical solution program using Turbo-C were formulated to describe the radical distribution and average displacement amplitude of vibrating dehydrated contact lens(HEMA) driven by sinusoidal or rectangular pressure. The natural resonant frequency of the lens diaphram(thickness 0.08mm, diameter 14mm, curvature radius 8mm) was measured to be 5730 Hz from the extrapolation of frequency vs addedmass to the diaphram curve. The Young's modulus of the lens was measured to be $4{\times}10^9$ Pa with altering the original shape. The effect of parameters such as thickness, effective radius, damping coeff., amplitude of driving pressure on the vibration characteristics was illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. When the frequency of driving pressure coincides with the integral multiple of fundamental resonance frequency of the lens the wave pattern changes from arc to bell-shape along the radial position of the diaphram. If this happens to the contact lens on the cornea in vivo, it might create the feel of pull of the lens due to the increased rise of central part of the lens.

A method for increasing the difference of side-lobe level in spherical microphone array is presented. In array signal processing, it is known that narrow interval between sensors can increase the difference between main lobe and side-lobe of array response which eventually increase the source recognition capability. Recent commercial array being used, however, have shown certain limitation in using the number of sensors due to its costs and geometrical size of array. To overcome this problem, we have adapted MEMS sensors into spherical microphone array. To check out the improvement, two different types of spherical microphone array were designed. One array is composed with 32 regular instrument microphones and the other one is 85 MEMS sensors. Simulation and experiments were conducted on a sinusoidal noise source with two arrays. The time history data were analyzed with spherical harmonic decomposition and beamforming technique. 85 MEMS sensors array showed the improved side-lobe level suppression by more than 4 dB above the frequency content of 2 kHz compared to 32-sensor array.
