An aim of the study is to develop an efficient numerical simulation technique that can handle the two-scale analysis of fluid permeation filters fabricated by the partial sintering technique of small spherical ceramics. A solid-fluid mixture homogenization method is introduced to predict the mechanical characters such as rigidity and permeability of the porous ceramic filters from the micro-scale geometry and configuration of partially-sintered particles. An extended finite element (X-FE) discretization technique based on the enriched interpolations of respective characteristic functions at fluid-solid interfaces is proposed for the non-interface-fitted mesh solution of the micro-scale analysis that needs non-slip condition at the interface between solid and fluid phases of the unit cell. The homogenization and localization performances of the proposed method are shown in a typical two-dimensional benchmark problem whose model has a hole in center. Three-dimensional applications to the body-centered cubic (BCC) and face-centered cubic (FCC) unit cell models are also shown in the paper. The 3D application is prepared toward the computer-aided optimal design of ceramic filters. The accuracy and stability of the X-FEM based method are comparable to those of the standard interface-fitted FEM, and are superior to those of the voxel type FEM that is often used in such complex micro geometry cases.

In order to prevent adhering of molten glass on a mold wall, the wall is swabbed with lubricant oil before forming. However, the swabbing process can be removed from the entire processes of the glass forming if the mold wall is made of a porous sintered material. The purpose of the present study is to manufacture a sintered material(having a sintered density of $85{\~}90\%$)which is the most appropriate into. plane material for a glass mold. For the research, SUS310L-based coarse powder (${\~}150{\mu}m$) and SUS420J2-based fine powder ($40{\~}50{\mu}m$) were used for the compact materials, and effects of compaction pressure and sintering condition(atmosphere, temperature) were investigated. The results obtained were as fellows. (1) By means of solid phase sintering, a desired sintering density could not be achieved in any case when using a 310L-based powder having a large particle size. (2) When sintering green compacts(compaction pressure of $2ton/cm^2$) in a commercial vacuum furnace(at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours), the sintered compacts had densities of $6.2g/cm^3(79\%)$ for 310L + 0.03$\%$B, $6.6g/cm^3 (86\%)$ for 420J2, $7.3g/cm^3(95\%)$ for 420J2+(0.03)$\%$B, and $7.6g/cm^3(99\%)$ for 420j2+(0.06)$\%$B, respectively. As a result, it is regarded that sintered compacts having a desired porosity may be achieved by vacuum sintering the 420J2-based powder (low pressure compaction) and the 310L+0.03$\%$B-based powder (high pressure compaction).

Though the history of finite element analysis in field of powder metallurgy is not short, industrial engineer is still being dependent on the trial and error approach based on engineer's experience in selecting process conditions. This problem is mainly due to the difficulty in establishing models for the behavior of a powder compact during compaction and sintering as well as finding material parameters for the models and the absence of CAE software with which industrial engineer can easily investigate the effect of process conditions on the quality of product. Therefore, we established very simple and cheap procedure to find material parameters for powder compaction behavior and implemented it in self-developed commercial CAE software for powder metallurgy, PMsolver. Basically, the development strategy of PMsolver lies on simplification and convenience so as for industrial engineers to use it with least training. Using PMsolver, optimal process conditions were found for some geometry and powders. Prior to process condition design, the accuracy of finite element analysis was verified.

The cement is accomplished with CaO, SiO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3, etc. After pulverizing materials of the limestone, the sand and the clay(shale), iron ore, the cement becomes clinker materials sintering from the rotary kiln of oxidizing atmosphere. The part in the materials of the clinker is substituted with slag, sludge etc. and it is used. because The chromium which is to be included in the clinker materials, in sintering process hexavalent chromium is converted with the chrome. Consequently it changed the type and a content of clinker materials and test hexavalent chromium of the clinkers which is manufactured.
We investigated the effect of ZnO filler on the microstructure of $BaO-B_2O_3-ZnO-P_2O_5$ glass system to find an etching mechanism of barrier ribs. The sintering behavior of composites heated in the temperature range $560-600^{\circ}C$ was studied by volumetric shrinkage rate and microstructure. The etching test was carried out in $HNO_3$ solution at $50^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The volumetric shrinkage of sintered sample decreased with the increased firing temperature because of the formation of two crystals. Glass and ZnO filler react forming the $BaZn_2(PO_4)_2$ crystal phases during the sintering process. Etching phenomenon of sintered samples by $HNO_3$ showed that the $BaZn_2(PO_4)_2$ crystal phase was strongly leached compared to glass matrix, crystal phases and fillers. Therefore, the control of interface by condition of sintering is so important to achieve etching effect in barrier ribs.

Titanium and its alloys are useful for implant materials. In this study, porous Ti-Nb-Zr biomaterials were successfully synthesized by powder metallurgy using a $NH_4HCO_3$ as space holder and $TiH_2$ as foaming agent. Consolidation of powder was accomplished by spark plasma sintering process(SPS) at $850^{\circ}C$ under 30 MPa condition. The effect of high energy milling time on pore size and distribution in Ti-Nb-Zr alloys with space holder($NH_4HCO_3$) was investigated by optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM) & energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). Microstructure observation revealed that, a lot of pores were uniformly distributed in the Ti-Nb-Zr alloys as size of about $30-100{\mu}m$ using mixed powder and milled powders. In addition, the pore ratio was found to be about 5-20% by image analysis, using an image analyzer(Image Pro Plus). Furthermore, the physical properties of specimens were improved with increasing milling time as results of hardness, relative density, compressive strength and Young's modulus. Particularly Young's modulus of the sintered alloy using 4h milled powder reached 52 GPa which is similar to bone elastic modulus.

The dynamic release behavior of Cs from high burn-up spent PWR fuel was experimentally performed under the conditions of a thermal treatment process such as voloxidation and sintering conditions. In voloxidation process, influence of the oxidation and reduction atmosphere on the Cs release characteristic using fragment type of spent fuel heated up to $1,500^{\circ}C$ was compared. In sintering process, temperature history effect on Cs release behavior was evaluated using green pellet under 4% $H_2/Ar$ environment. Temperature range for complete Cs release from spent fuel fragment under voloxidation condition was about $800^{\circ}C{\sim}1,200^{\circ}C$, but that of green pellet under the reduction atmosphere was $1,100^{\circ}C{\sim}1,400^{\circ}C$. Key parameters on Cs release behavior from spent fuel was powder formation as well as the diffusion rate of Cs compound to grain boundary and fuel surface.
Hematite iron ore and waste iron oxide sludge containing about 3-5 wt% $SiO_2$ were purified by three types of method developed on the basis of the Bayer process which is known as the purification process of bauxite ore. The basic principle of the developed methods lies in the fact that the impurities contained in the iron oxides, such as $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ are soluble in the alkaline reagents. Reaction of the raw materials with KOH was done in pressure vessel, at atmospheric pressure, and by both of these two. By the pressure vessel method $SiO_2$ content was reduced to below 0.5 wt% in the waste iron oxide sludge, while, in iron ore, $SiO_2$ remained at 2-3 wt%. The atmospheric pressure reaction rendered the waste iron oxide sludge $SiO_2$ content below 0.5wt% when the reaction temperature increased to above 90$0^{\circ}C$. The combined method of two previous methods was the most effective process and rendered the refined iron oxide about 300-400ppm of $SiO_2$. Using some refined iron oxides, Ba-ferrite was produced and magnetic properties were measured. The highest quality of magnetic properties obtained in this study were Br=2.09 G, bHc=1.99 KOe, iHc=4.54 KOe, $(BH)_{max}$=1.06 MGOe. Effect of sintering condition and chemical composition will be discussed.
It was investigated that $Al_2$$O_3$/Cu nanocomposite powder could be optimally prepared by dispersion and reduction of Cu oxide, and suitably consolidated by employing pulse electric current sintering (PECS) process. $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$ and CuO powders were used as elemental powders. In order to obtain $Al_2$O$_3$ embedded by finely and homogeneously dispersed CuO particles, the elemental powders were high energy ball milled at the rotating speed of 900 rpm, with the milling time varying up to 10 h. The milled powders were heat treated at $350^{\circ}C$ in H$_2$ atmosphere for 30 min to reduce CuO into Cu. The reduced powders were subsequently sintered by employing PECS process. The composites sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 5 min showed the relative density of above 98%. The fracture toughness of the $Al_2$$O_3$/Cu nanocomposite was as high as 4.9MPa.$m^{1}$2//, being 1.3 times the value of pure $Al_2$$O_3$ sintered under the same condition.

This paper presents the electrical characteristics with manufacturing process and performance evaluation of high performance zinc oxide varistors. ZnO varistors were fabricated with typical ceramic production methods with different thickness and the structural and electrical characteristics of ZnO varistors were investigated. All varistors exhibited high density, which was in the range of $5.41{\sim}5.49g/cm^3$. In the electrical properties, the reference voltage increased in the range of $4.410{\sim}5.250kV$ with increasing their thickness and the residual voltage exhibited the same trends as the reference voltage. In the long duration current impulse withstand test, E-2 and F-1 samples failed at the two and four shots of impulse current, respectively, but E-1 and F-2 samples survived 18 shots during the test. Before and after this test, the variation ratio of residual voltage of E-1 and F-2 samples were -0.34 % and 0.05 %, respectively, which were in the acceptance range of 5 %. According to the results of tests, it is thought that if the fabrication process such as insulating coating, sintering condition, and soldering method is improved, these ZnO varistors would be possible to apply to the station class arresters in the near future.
