  • Direct syntheses of bulk $Ti_3Al$ via electro-discharge-sintering (EDS) of a stoichiometric elemental powder mixture were investigated. A capacitor bank of $450{\mu}F$ was charged with three input energies, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 kJ. The charged capacitor bank was then instantaneously discharged through 0.3 g of a Ti-25.0 at.%Al powder mixture for consolidation. Complete phase transformation occurred in less than $200{\mu}sec$ by the discharge and a bulk $Ti_3Al$ compact was obtained. Compared with consolidated samples fabricated by conventional methods such as high vacuum sintering and casting, the electro-discharge-sintered $Ti_3Al$ compact shows a very fine microstructure with a hardness value of 425 Hv. Electro-discharge-sintering under a $N_2$ atmosphere successfully modified the surface Ti oxide of the $Ti_3Al$ compact into Ti nitride, which concurred with the synthesis and consolidation of $Ti_3Al$. Complete conversion yielding a single phase $Ti_3Al$ is primarily dominated by the fast solid state diffusion reaction.

  • The microstructure evolution during sintering of the W-5 wt.%Cu nanocomposite powders was investigated for the purpose of developing a high density W-Cu alloy. The W-5 wt.%Cu nanopowder compact, fully-densified during sintering at 1623 K, revealed a homogeneous microstructure that consists of high contiguity structures of W-W grains and an interconnected Cu phase located along the edges of the W grains. The Vickers hardness of the sintered W-5 wt.%Cu specimen was $427{\pm}22$ Hv much higher than that ($276{\pm}19$ Hv) of the conventional heavy alloy. This result is mostly due to the higher contiguity microstructure of the W grains compared to the conventional W heavy alloy.

  • Yttrium aluminum garnet(YAG) powders were synthesized by spray-drying of the hydroxides coprecipitated from a mixture of aqueous solutions of $Al(NO_3)_3.9H_2O \;and\; Y(NO_3)_3.6H_2O$ Phase formation in the powders during heat treatments and their sintering charactristics were investigated. In the powder obtained by washing the hydroxides before spray-drying, a metastable yttrium aluminum hexagonal (YAH) phase was first crystallized and then transformed into YAG as temperature was increased. The formation of YAH was attributed to a deviation in compositions of the particles from the starting composition of YAG. However, the powder prepared without washing step contained a stable yttrium aluminum monoclinic(YAM) phase in addition to YAG due to a large deviation from the starting composition. A powder compact of a single phase YAG was pressureless-sintered for 4 hrs at $1700^{\circ}C$ and the density was 93% of the theoretical density.

  • Hard materials such as hardmetal, coated hardmetal, cermet, ceramics and diamond or c-BN sintered compact are a kind of grain-dispersed alloy with high volume of hard particles. These are used for cutting tools, wear-resistant tools, rock bits, high pressure apparatus, etc. The annual production in Japan is about 1.7 billion dollars (200 billion yen). This is greatly owed to the development in science and technology which has been accomplished by applying new concepts such as fine or uniform grain microstructure, orientation of crystal grains, functionally graded material, artificial lattice and coherent bonding in recent years. In this review, the development in recent years in Japan is briefly summarized.

  • The powder mixture which has a bimodal size distribution, with a large mode corresponding to AUC-UO$_2$ powder and a small one corresponding to ADU-UO$_2$ powder, was prepared, pressed into compacts, and sintered at 1680t for 4 hours in hydrogen gas. The compact density of the powder mixture increases with increasing ADU-UO$_2$content within a content of 20 wt %, since small ADU-UO$_2$ particles can fill interstices between large AUC-UO$_2$particles. The UO$_2$ pellet made using the powder mixture has a lower open porosity than that made using AUC-UO$_2$ powder alone. The mechanism for the formation of a flake-like pore is proposed, and the decrease in open porosity may be ascribed to the decrease in the number of flake-like pores.

  • Dense glass-ceramics for low firing temperature substrate were prepared by addition of CeO2 flux to the glass of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 system. Glass powders were fabricated by melting at 150$0^{\circ}C$ and ball milling. Glass powder compacts were sintered at 800~100$0^{\circ}C$ for 3h. The crystallization and the shrinkage behaviors of glass powder compacts were analyzed by XRD, DTA and TMA. The shrinkage of glass powder compact increased with increasing the amount of CeO2. Because the softening temperature decreased and the crystallization temperature increased with increasing the amount of CeO2. Apparently, addition of CeO2 prevented formation of $\mu$-cordierite phase from the glass-ceramics and improved formation of $\alpha$-cordierite phase. Therefore crystallization properties were enhanced.

  • The microstructure and electrical properties of Zn-Pr-Co-Cr-Tb oxide-based varistors were investigated for different $Tb_4O_7$ amounts. As the $Tb_4O_7$ amount increased, the average grain size decreased from 7.7 to $4.8{\mu}m$ and the sintered density increased from 5.73 to $5.84g/cm^3$. As the $Tb_4O_7$ amount increased, the varistor voltage increased from 280.9 to 715.8V/mm and the nonlinear coefficient increased from 26.4 to 44.4. It is assumed that these varistors can be applied for high power with compact size.

  • The removal of oxygen during sintering by carbothermic reduction was studied for steel compacts Fe-Cr-Mo-C and Fe-Mo-C prepared from prealloyed powders. The compacts were prepared by pressing at 600 and 1000 MPa and sintering at 1100 and $1300^{\circ}C$ in vacuum. It showed that for the Cr-Mo steel, deoxidation strongly depends on the sintering temperature, in contrast to the plain Mo steel; at $1300^{\circ}C$ very low oxygen levels were measured with the standard density compact while at high density still significant oxygen is contained. This indicates inhibition of final deoxidation by pore closure, but apparently without adverse effect on the mechanical properties.

  • In the present work, the sintering behavior of high strength Al-5.6Zn-2.5Mg-1.6Cu (in wt.%) alloy compacts prepared from elemental powders was investigated. Microstructural evaluation was accompanied by XRD and DSC methods in order to determine the temperature and chemical composition of the liquid phases formed during sintering. It was found that three transient liquid phases are formed at 420, 439 and 450 $^{\circ}C$. Microstructural study revealed the progressive formation of sintered contacts due to the presence of the liquid phases, although the green compact expands as a result of the melt penetration along the grain boundaries. While Zn melts at ${\sim}420\;^{\circ}C$, the intermetallic phases formed between Al and Mg were found to be responsible for the formation of liquid phase and the dimensional change at higher temperatures.
