High purity Si-C (99.999%) powder prepared by mechanical alloying was added to a commercial SiC powder as a sintering additive. Reaction bonded silicon carbide balls and jars with high purity (99.98%) were used for the mechanical alloying. As a result, the purity of the sintered Si-C was higher than 99.99%. When sintered at $2200^{\circ}C$ under 50 MPa pressure for 1 h, SiC containing 10 wt% of high purity Si-C showed a relative density of 95.3%, similar to the relative density of commercial SiC (95%). However, the relative density of SiC decreased to 90.6% without the additive when the applied pressure decreased to 40 MPa. In contrast, the relative density was nearly unaffected by the decrease of the pressure when using the Si-C additive. Therefore, the addition of Si-C powder promoted the densification of SiC above $2000^{\circ}C$ under 40 MPa pressure.
Thorium dioxide (ThO2)-silicon carbide (SiC) composite fuel pellets were fabricated via the spark plasma-sintering (SPS) method to investigate the role of the addition of SiC in enhancing the thermal conductivity of ThO2 fuel. SiC particles with an average size of 1㎛ in 10 and 15 vol% were used to manufacture the composite pellets. The changes in the composites' densification, microstructure and thermal conductivity were explored by comparing them with pure ThO2 pellets. The structural and microstructural characterization of the composite pellets has revealed that SPS could manufacture high-quality composite pellets without having any reaction products or intermetallic. The density measurement by the Archimedes principles and the grain size from the electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis has indicated that the composites have higher densities and smaller grain sizes than the pellets without SiC addition. Finally, thermal conductivity as a function of temperature has revealed that sintered ThO2-SiC composites showed an increase of up to 56% in thermal conductivity compared to pristine ThO2 pellets.

Friction and wear of pressureless sintered Ti(C,N)-WC ceramics were studied using a ball-on-reciprocating flat apparatus in open air. The silicon nitride ball and the cemented carbide (WC-Co) ball were used against the Ti(C,N)-WC plate samples. The friction coefficients of the Ti(C,N)-WC samples against the silicon nitride ball and the cemented carbide ball were about 0.57 and 0.3, respectively. The wear coefficient of the sample without WC addition was 5 times as large as that of the sample with 10 mole % WC addition when tested against the silicon nitride ball under 98 N. The higher wear coefficient of Ti(C,N)-0WC was explained in part by larger grain size. Wear occurred mainly by grain dislodgment after intergranular cracking mainly caused by the accumulated stress within the grains.
The effect of additive composition, using AlN and $Er_{2}O_{3}$ as sintering additives, on the mechanical properties of liquid-phase-sintered, and subsequently annealed SiC ceramics was investigated. The microstructures developed were quantitatively analyzed by image analysis. The average thickness of SiC grains increased with increasing the $Er_{2}O_{3}/(AlN + Er_{2}O_{3})$ ratio in the additives whereas the aspect ratio decreased with increasing the ratio. The mechanical properties versus $Er_{2}O_{3}/(AlN + Er_{2}O_{3})$ ratio curve had a maximum; i.e., there was a small composition range at which optimum mechanical properties were realized. The best results were obtained when the ratio ranged from 0.4 to 0.6. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of the SiC ceramics were $550\~650\;MPa$ and $5.5\~6.5$ MPa${\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.
${\beta}$-silicon carbides with yttrium aluminum garnet of 2,5,10 mol% were prepared by a liquid--phase sint-ering and the microstructural evolution and phase transformation were investigated during sintering as functions of liquid-phase amount and sintering time. The rate of grain growth decreases with the addition of the amount of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) in the SiC starting powder however the apparent density and the aspect ratio of grains in sintered body increase. The phase transformation from ${\beta}$-SiC to ${\alpha}$-SiC were dependent on the liquid-phase amount and sintering time.
The complete joining method for dissimilar press punch materials and its real-time evaluation method is not available at present. Brazing method has been used for joining them, but it is known that the welded joint by the brazing has the lower bonding efficiency and reliability than the diffusion welding. The friction welding with a diffusion mechanism in bonding was applied in this study. This work was carried out to determine the proper friction welding conditions and to analyze mechanical properties of friction welded joints of sintered carbide tool materials (SKNM50 for the blade part of press punch) to alloy steel (SCM440 for the shank part of press punch) using aluminum (A6061 for the interlayer material) as an insert material between the sintered carbide tool materials and the alloy steel. In addition, acoustic emission test was carried out during friction welding to evaluate the weld quality.
Keys to the attainment of tailored properties in SiC ceramics are microstructure control and judicious selection of the sintering additives. In this study, three different strategies for controlling microstructure of liquid-phase-sintered SiC ceramics (LPS-SiC) have been suggested: control of the initial $\alpha-SiC$ content in the starting powder, a seeding technique, and a post-sintering heat treatment. The strategies suggested offer substantial flexibility for producing toughened SiC ceramics whereby grain size, grain size distribution, and aspect ratio can be effectively controlled. The present results suggest that the proposed strategies are suitable for the manufacture of toughened SiC ceramics with improved toughness.

This paper describes the machinability of the sintered carbide and tool-die steel(STD-11) by electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes which have multi-holes. Various types of electrode which have different diameters and materials are used with the application of continuous direct current and axial electrode feed. Inner part of electrodes are inserted with smaller tubes or Y-channel or bar. In ED-Drilling, the dielectric flushed down the interior of the rotating tube electrode, in order to remove machining debris from the hole. As result of experiments, the bigger the diameter of the electrode is, the lower the material removal rate is. Machinability of copper electrode is higher than that of brass. In machining of sintered carbide, to use oil is better than distilled water as dielectric.
Various $\alpha$-silicon carbied and colloidal graphite particles were sintered at 155$0^{\circ}C$ in vacuum atmosphere by reaction bonding sintering method, and the physical properties and microstructural analysis of specimen were investigated. With decreasing particle size, sintered density and 3-point bending strength of materials were increased and 3.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ specimen showed high density and strength, 3.05g/㎤, 40kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$, respectively. The results of X-ray diffractometer and optical micrographs analysis showed that graphite and silicon melt reacted to convert to fine $\beta$-SiC particle and the body was changed to dense material.

Rapid tooling technique enables us to make dies and molds that produce prototype parts with the correct material at a substantially reduced cost and time. In this study, experiments on selective laser sintering of tungsten carbide-cobalt mixture were carried out to find optimal sintering conditions that will be applied to rapid metal tooling. The experiments were carried out within an air, an argon and a nitrogen atmosphere. Coupons of single layer were sintered at various laser powers, scanning speeds and scan spacings. Very severe oxidation took place within an air atmosphere. The oxidation is reduced significantly within an argon and a nitrogen atmosphere. The thickness of the sintered coupons is increased as the energy density, the laser energy Per unit scanned area, is increased. Several multi-layer sintering experiments were also carried out.
