Moisture related properties of fabrics in dynamic modes are considered to be important in the judgement of the subjective comfort characteristics of clothing fabrics. In the current study, an attempt to improve the cobaltous chloride test method was made which has been known as a convenient screening test for dynamic surface wetness. The color changes of cobaltous chloride treated fabrics on the simulated sweating skin were calibrated against standard color strips. The standard color strips were made of all typs of test fabrics and installed inside of the test tubes containing a series of saturated salt solutions, which gives more quantitative informations on dynamic moisture transfer Influences of fiber types and finishes on dynamic moisture transfer in textiles were studied using a single layer of fabric samples. Fiber types included $100\%$ cotton, C/P 50/50, C/P 35/65. Durable press and soil release finished cotton and C/P 50/50 fabrics were also included. There were significant fiber effects on the dynamic moisture transfer. The order of time taken to reach to the specified $\%$ RH was C/P 35/65$100\%$ cotton fabrics. It was possible to detect significant finish effects by increasing the concentrations of cobaltous chloride solutions. The order of time taken to reach to the specified $\%$ R.H was durable press$100\%$ cotton, C/P 50/50, C/P 35/65 and $100\%$ PET were placed at the inner side of the outer layer and tested. It was shown that cobaltous chloride treated $100\%$ cotton fabirc was easier to detect color changes than C/P blend fabic in the double layer experiments. By placing test sample under the cobaltous chloride treated cotton fabrics, it was able to detect the differences among the test samples, some of which were known to be difficult in padding with cobaltous chloride solutions. Besides, the double layer method would provide with the broader application of the cobaltous chloride method in !uture, since it is possible to test the dynamic moisture transfer of clothing as worn.
Friction piles are being constructed in Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc.) where the soft ground is deep, and many cases of friction piles are accumulated in terms of experience. In this study, we used the results of four static load test and load transfer test conducted in Myanmar sites to analyze the skin friction of soil layer. In addition, we proposed a relationship chart with skin friction measured in the N-value of Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and the load transfer test result of the single drilled shaft. In the case of Myanmar sites, the range of soil layers was deeper than domestic sites, so the conventional formula of skin friction using the N-value of SPT is different from domestic sites. In sandy layer, fs = 0.096 N in Myanmar sites showed a similar result of the domestic fs = 0.106 N. In clayey layer, fs = 0.315 N, in Myanmar sites showed about 5.0 times higher than the domestic fs = 0.062 N. The results of this study are based on limited data. Therefore, if we analyze the results of more load transfer tests, we can suggest a conventional formula for skin friction according to the N-value. It is expected to be used as important basic data in the future.

Inelastic seismic analysis is necessary for the seismic design due to the nonlinear behavior of a structure-soil system, and the importance of the performance based design considering the soil-structure interaction is recognized for the reasonable seismic design. In this study, elastic and inelastic seismic response analyses of a single degree of freedom system on the soft soil layer were peformed considering the nonlinearity of the soil for the 11 weak or moderate, and 5 strong earthquakes scaled to the nominal peak acceleration of 0.075g, 0.15g, 0.2g and 0.3g. Seismic response analyses for the structure-soil system were peformed in one step applying the earthquake motions to the bedrock In the frequency domain, using a pseudo 3-D dynamic analysis software. Study results indicate that it is necessary to consider the nonlinear soil-structure interaction effects and to perform the performance based seismic design for the various soil layers rather than to follow the routine procedures specified in the seismic design codes. Nonlinearity of the soft soil excited with the weak earthquakes also affected significantly to the elastic and inelastic responses due to the nonlinear soil amplification of the earthquake motions, and it was pronounced especially for the elastic ones.
In meeting the technical needs for deepwater conditions and overcoming the shortfalls of single-layer pipes for deepwater applications, pipe-in-pipe (PIP) systems have been developed. While, for PIP pipelines directly laid on the seabed or with partial embedment, one of the primary service risks is lateral buckling. The critical axial force is a key factor governing the global lateral buckling response that has been paid much more attention. It is influenced by global imperfections, submerged weight, stiffness, pipe-soil interaction characteristics, et al. In this study, Finite Element Models for imperfect PIP systems are established on the basis of 3D beam element and tube-to-tube element in Abaqus. A parameter study was conducted to investigate the effects of these parameters on the critical axial force and post-buckling forms. These parameters include structural parameters such as imperfections, clearance, and bulkhead spacing, pipe/soil interaction parameter, for instance, axial and lateral friction properties between pipeline and seabed, and load parameter submerged weight. Python as a programming language is been used to realize parametric modeling in Abaqus. Some conclusions are obtained which can provide a guide for the design of PIP pipelines.
The increasing lack of good quality soils allowing the development of roadway, motorway, or railway networks, as well as large scale industrial facilities, necessitates the use of reinforcement techniques. Their aim is the improvement of the global performance of compressible soils, both in terms of settlement reduction and increase of the load bearing capacity. Among the various available techniques, the improvement of soils by incorporating vertical stiff piles appears to be a particularly appropriate solution, since it is easy to implement and does not require any substitution of significant soft soil volumes. The technique consists in driving a group of regularly spaced piles through a soft soil layer down to an underlying competent substratum. The surface load being thus transferred to this substratum by means of those reinforcing piles, which illustrates the case of a piled embankment. The differential settlements at the base of the embankment between the soft soil and the stiff piles lead to an "arching effect" in the embankment due to shearing mechanisms. This effect, which can be accentuated by the use of large pile caps, allows partial load transfer onto the pile, as well as surface settlement reduction, thus ensuring that the surface structure works properly. A technique for producing rigid piles has been developed to achieve in a single operation a rigid circular pile associated with a cone shaped head reversed on the place of a rigid circular pile. This technique has been used with success in a pile-supported road near Bourgoin-Jallieu (France). In this article, a numerical study based on this real case is proposed to highlight the functioning mode of this new technique in the case of industrial slabs.

Land seismic reflection survey has been increasingly demanded in various civil engineering works because of its own ability to delineate layers, water table, to detect cavities or fracture zones, to estimate seismic velocities of each layer. However, our shallow subsurface structures are very complex. The relatively thin layer(mostly soil) to the wavelength directly followed by a basic rock with high impedance used to generate complicated surface waves, kind of channel waves with high amplitude that is dominate in entire seismograms and hence the useful reflection events will be almost hopelessly immersed in the undesired surface waves. Thus, it would seem that the use of traditional seismic survey could not be likely to provide in itself a satisfactory information about our exploration targets. This paper hence introduces an efficient measuring strategy illustrating a properly controlled arrangement of the vertical single force sources commonly used, yielding a very sharply elongated form of P-energy with a minimum of S radiation energy, what we call, P-beam source. Abundant experiments of physical modeling showed that in that way the surface waves could be enormously reduced and the reflection events would be additive and thus reinforced. Examples of field data are also illustrated. The contribution of P-beam source will be great in civil engineering area as well as in general geological exploration area.
The experimental study on disposal cover through the performance test facility offers reliability in the safety of near surface disposal of low and intermediate level radioactive waste. To ensure the long-term safety of the repository, the impermeability, integrity, resistance to degradation and ease of maintenance might be considered as the basic performance requirement of the disposal cover. considering the difficulties to meet these performance requirement by using single layer, the disposal cover design which is composed of top layer, middle drainage layer and bottom low permeability layer is schemed for the test facility. The water balance of the cover was evaluated by using HELP code. For the long-term monitoring of the soil moisture content and matric potential, TDR probes and tensiometers will be installed in 6 test cells. Each test cell is dimensioned 3$\times$3$\times$3.3m.
The stability prediction of shallow buried tunnels is one of the most difficult tasks in civil engineering. The aim of this work is to predict the state of collapse in shallow tunnel in layered soils by employing non-associated flow rule and nonlinear failure criterion within the framework of upper bound theorem. Particular emphasis is first given to consider the effects of dilation on the collapse mechanism of shallow tunnel. Furthermore, the seepage forces and surface settlement are considered to analyze the influence of different dilation coefficients on the collapse shape. Two different curve functions which describe two different soil layers are obtained by virtual work equations under the variational principle. The distinct characteristics of falling blocks up and down the water level are discussed in the present work. According to the numerical results, the potential collapse range decreases with the increase of the dilation coefficient. In layered soils, both of the single layer's dilation coefficient and two layers' dilation coefficients increase, the range of the potential collapse block reduces.
The Kunang cave paleolithic site is located at Tanyang [$N37^{\circ}2'$, $128^{\circ}21'E$], Chungbuk Province, which is in the Central part of the Korean peninsula. The cave is developed at 312 amsl in a karstic mountainous area. The South Han River flows across this region and other caves can also be found near the river. The site was discovered in 1986 and excavated 3 times by the Chungbuk National University Museum until now. The cave was wellpreserved from modem human activities until the first discovery. The full length of the cave is estimated to be ca. 140 m. However, a spacious part up to 11 m from the entrance has been excavated. Eight lithological units are divided over the vertical profile at a depth of 5 m. Each unit is deposited in ascending order as follow: mud layer (Unit 9), lower complex (Unit 8) which is composed of angular blocks and fragments with a muddy matrix, lower travertine layer (Unit 7; flowstone), middle complex (Unit 6; cultural layer) which is composed of fragments with a muddy matrix, middle travertine layer (Unit 5; flowstone), yellowish muddy layer (Unit 4), upper complex (Unit 3; cultural layer) which has a similar composition to Unit 8. the upper travertine layer (Unit 2; flowstone), and finally surface soil layer (Unit 1). The most abundant vestiges in the cultural layers are the animal bones. They are small fractured pieces and mostly less than 3 cm in length. About 3,800 bone pieces from 25 animal species have been collected so far, 90 percent of them belonging to young deers. Previous archaeological study of these bone pieces shows thatprehistoric people occupied the cavenot for permanent dwelling but for temporary shelter during their seasonal hunting activity. More extensive studies of these bones together with pollen analysis are in progress to reconstruct the paleoenvironment of this cave. Only a single date (12,500 BP) obtained from a U-Th measurement of the upper travertine layer was previously available. In spite of the importance of the cave stratigraphy, there was no detail chronological investigation to establish the depositional process of the cultural layers and to understand the periodic structure of the cave strata, alternating travertine floor and complex layers. We have measured five 14C age dating (38900+/-1000, 36400+/-900, 40600+/-1600, more than 51000 and 52000 14C BP) using Seoul National University 14C AMS facility, conducted systematic process of the collagen extraction from bone fragments samples. From the result, we estimate that sedimentation rate of the cave earth is constant, and that the travertine layers, Unit 2 and Unit 3, was formed during MIS 5a(ca. 80 kBP) and MIS 5c (ca. 100 kBP) respectively. The Kunang Cave site is located at Yochonli of the region of Danyang in the mid-eastern part of Korea. This region is compased of limestones in which many caves were found and the Nam-han river flows meanderingly. The excavations were carried out three times in 1986, 1988, and 1998.

This study was conducted to analyze the planting structure and ecological characteristics of greon spaces on the grounds of e Dangjin steam power plant. To achieve these goals, we surveyed existing vegetation, plant community structure, Plant volume and growth rate. Based on e vegetation analysis, existing vegetation was classified into six types: herbaceous species $(70.54\%)$, evergreen coniferous trees $(21.17\%)$, deciduous broad-leaved trees $(5.10\%)$, deciduous coniferous trees $(1.47\%)$, shrubs $(0.12\%)$, and other types $(1.59\%)$. The coal storage, office, and playground areas were community is the natural forest area where a Pinus thunbergii / Pinus densiflora community is distributed in terms of vegetation structure, species diversity, plant volume, and growth rate. The artificial green spaces(near the coal storage, office, playground areas) had a single-layer structure. Species diversity indices of the artificial green areas were $0.1655\~0.4807$ compared to 0.8628 in the natural forest, which presented a good growth environment. Also, the plant volume in the artificial green space was lower than that of the natural green space. Therefore, it would be desirable to develope a multi-layer structure similar to that of the vegetation in the natural green space in order to improve the amount of plant volume. The plant-damage ratio of Pinus thunbergii was $52.48\%$ in the coal storage area, and $8.48\~ 11.52\%$, in the other survey areas. Also, the vitality of Pinus thunbergii was $15.45k{\Omega}$ in the coal storage areas, which indicates bad growing conditions. This suggests that soil characteristics and dust have a bad impact on growth. The investigation into deciduous tres' growth status showed that appropriate plants would be Albizzia julibrissin, Acer palmatum var. sanguineum, Acer palmatum, Malus spp., Prunus sargentii.
