Six phytal harpacticoid species of the genus porcellidium are recorded from 22 algal species in the eastern (Sea of Japan) and southern (Korea Strait) coast of Korea. Among these six species, Porcellidium ofunatense Harris and Iwasaki and Porcellidium gamoi(Harris and Iwasaki) are recorded as new to Korean fauna. Other four species are described as new to science: Porcellidium bipartitum n. sp. found from a single algal species, Procellidium wandoensis n. sp. from ten algal species, Porcellidium acutum n. sp. from five algal species, and Porcellidium brevlcacum n. sp. from two algal species. It is found that the associations between the species of Porcellidium and macroalgae reveal weak specificities.
This study was conducted to investigate the different effects of ectomycorrhizal fungal (ECMF) species on the growth of seedlings of Pinus densiflora, and the effects of ECMF diversity on plant productivity. A total of five species of ECMF were isolated from root tips of pine seedlings collected from Mt. Songni and used as inocula. Pots containing pine seedlings were inoculated with either a single ECMF species or a mixture of five ECMF species. All of the seedlings formed ECM on their roots except for the control plants. The pine seedlings' growth responses varied by the different ECMF species. Also, pine seedlings inoculated with a mixture of five ECMF species showed the highest growth response. The results of the study suggest that the colonization of diverse species of ECMF will increase plant productivity, and the selection of suitable ECMF species could be an important factor for plant growth.
Flame structure of diffusion flame interacting with a single vortex was investigated with direct numerical simulation (DNS). A well-known counterflow diffusion flame was used as an initial flat flame and single vortices were made by issuing a high-velocity jet abruptly in fuel- and air-side. The variations in the maximum concentration of major species (CO and $CO_2$) and NOx (NO and $NO_2$) with the stoichiometric scalar dissipation rate were investigated. Unsteady effects in the species concentration variation of the flame interacting with a vortex were identified by comparing with that of steady flame. $NO_2$ formation characteristics of the flame interacting with a vortex were well understood by investigating the $HO_2$ formation. To enhance the prediction performance in the fire simulation, current turbulent combustion modelings are needed to be modified by adopting the unsteady effects in the species concentrations of diffusion flame interacting with a vortex.
Molecular geometries for the cationic and neutral species of OXO (X=Cl, Br, and I) are optimized using the Hartree-Fock (HF) theory, the second order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2), the density functional theory with the B3LYP hybrid functional (B3LYP), and the coupled cluster theory using single and double excitation with a perturbational treatment of triplet excitation (CCSD[T]) methods, with two basis sets of triple zeta plus polarization quality. The single point calculations for these species are performed at the CCSD(T,Full) level. The harmonic vibrational frequencies for these species are calculated at the HF, MP2, B3LYP and CCSD(T) levels. The adiabatic ionization potential for OIO is calculated to be 936.7 kJ/mol at the CCSD(T,Full) level and the correct value is estimated to be around 945.4 kJ/mol.
Simple ways to build up mixed-metal molecules which can act as potential single-source precursors to multimetallic oxides are reviewed. Emphasis is given to Lewis acid-base reactions between metal alkoxides M(OR)/sub n/, and between metal alkoxides and more accessible oxide precursors, carboxylates M(O₂CR)/sub n/ and β-diketonates M(β-dik)/sub n/. Characterization of the precursors is achieved in the solid state (single crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR) and by multinuclear NMR in solution. The reactions proceed toward the formation of aggregates in which the different metals display their usual coordinations numbers, often six for transition metals, as shown. Strategies for fixing the stoichiometry between the metals are developed. The reactivity of the MM species (dissociation, effects of chemical modifiers, of other metallic species, hydrolytic or non-hydrolytic condensation, etc.) will be indicated. Transformations into oxides are illustrated on precursors for titanates or niobates.

The interface between nanomaterials and biosystems is emerging as one of the broadest and most dynamic areas of science and technology, bringing together biology, chemistry, physics and many areas of engineering, biomedicine. The combination of these diverse areas of research promised to yield revolutionary advances in healthcare, medicine, and life science. For example, the creation of new and powerful nanosensors that enable direct, sensitive, and rapid analysis of biological and chemical species can advance the diagnosis and treatment of disease, discovery and screening of new drug molecules. Nanowire based sensors are emerging as a powerful and general platform for ultrasensitive and multiplex detection of biological and chemical species. Here, we present the studies about noble metal nanowire sensors that can be used for sensitive detection of a wide-range of biological and chemical species including nucleic acids, proteins, and toxic metal ions. Moreover, the optical and electrochemical applications of noble metal nanowires are introduced. Noble metal nanowires are successfully used as plasmonic antennas and nanoelectrodes, thereby provide a pathway for a single molecule sensor, in vivo neural recording, and molecular injection and detection in a single living cell.
Daphne genkwa (Thymelaeaceae) is a small deciduous shrub widely cultivated as an ornamental. The complete chloroplast genome of this species is presented here. The genome is 132,741 bp long and has four subregions: 85,668 bp of large single-copy and 28,365 bp of small single-copy regions are separated by 9,354 bp of inverted repeat regions with 107 genes (71 protein-coding genes, four rRNAs, and 31 tRNAs) and one pseudogene. The phylogenetic tree shows that D. genkwa is nested within Wikstroemia and is not closely related to other species of Daphne, suggesting that it should be recognized as a species of Wikstroemia.

Molecular techniques, including restriction fragment length polymorphism(RFLP) and polymerase chain reaction-single strand conformational polymorph isms(PCR-SSCP), were developed to identify salted, dried threadfin(Eleutheronema tetradactylum) and white herring(Ilisha elongata) fish. Using PCR with universal primers, conserved 367-bp fragments of the cytochrome b gene were amplified from fresh fish samples and sequenced. The sequences were then searched for specific restriction sites. The digestion of the PCR products with the endonucleases AvaI, FokI, MboII, and MspI generated RFLP, which was used to identify the commercial products. Similarly, the amplified PCR-SSCP products were developed and the products tested. Overall, similar patterns were found in the majority of the fresh and processed products. Based on the results, both RFLP and PCR-SSCP were useful in determining and validating the authenticity of the fish species used to prepare the commercial salted, dried products. A similar approach can be applied to other species.
Nine free-living heterotrophic flagellates were cultured from marine intertidal sediments and freshwater sediments from Korea. These species are described with uninterpreted records based on light microscopy of living cells and reported taxonomically for the first time from Korea. Diagnostics of these species are as follows; Notosolenus hemicircularis: 9-11.8 ㎛ long with flagellar reservoir, ventrally flattened and dorsally convex with hyaline semicircular collar around short anterior neck, and 8 ridges on cell surface. Thecamonas tranhens: 4.5-7.1 ㎛ long, plastic with proboscis comprising an anterior flagellum surrounded by membranous sleeve. Bodomorpha minima: 4.5-7.0 ㎛ long, rigid with small rostrum in anterior end and active anterior flagellum. Cercomonas hiberna: 5.6-10.9 ㎛ long, very plastic with pseudopodia, cytoplasmic strand and 1 or 2 contractile vacuoles. Cercomonas pellucida: 7.5-13 ㎛ long, plastic with pseudopodia, cytoplasmic strand and single contractile vacuole. With nucleus closely connected to basal bodies. Eocercomonas echina: 4.7-6.5 ㎛ long, plastic with pseudopodia, cytoplasmic strand and 1 or 2 contractile vacuoles. Paracercomonas astra: 5.7-7.3 ㎛ long, moderately metabolic with pseudopodia, cytoplasmic strand and 1 or 2 contractile vacuoles. Paracercomonas minima: 5-9 ㎛ long, metabolic with pseudopodia, cytoplasmic strand and single contractile vacuole. Paracercomonas producta: 6.1-9.9 ㎛ long, very metabolic with pseudopodia, long cytoplasmic strand and single contractile vacuole.
Ciliates are undoubtedly one of the most diverse protozoans that play a significant role in ecology. However, molecular examination, based on comparing the DNA sequences, has been done on a limited number of the species. Because most ciliates are uncultivable and their population sizes are often too small, it is usually difficult to obtain sufficient genomic DNA required for PCR based experiments. In the present study, we evaluated the effectiveness of four commercial DNA extraction procedures that extract high quality genomic DNA from a single ciliate cell. It was discovered that RED Extract-N-$Amp^{TM}$ PCR kit is the best method for removing PCR-inhibiting substances and minimizing DNA loss during purification. This method can also amplify more than 25 reactions of PCR. In addition, this technique was applied to single cells of 19 species belonged to 7 orders under 5 classes that isolated from mixed natural populations. Their small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) was successfully amplified. In summary, we developed a simple technique for the high-yield extraction of purified DNA from a single ciliate cell that may be more useful for rare ciliates, such as tiny and uncultivable marine microbes.
