Kinetic Parameter Analysis of Hydrogen Diffusion Reaction for Hydrogen Storage Alloy of Fuel Cell System (연료전지의 수소저장용 합금에 대한 수소확산반응의 속도론적 해석)

  • Electrochemical hydrogenation/dehydrogenation properties were studied for a single particle of a Mm-based(Mm : minh metal) hydrogen storage alloy($MmNi_{3.55}Co_{0.75}Mn_{0.4}Al_{0.3}$) for fuel cell and Ni-MH batteries. A carbon fiber microelectrode was manipulated to make electrical contact with an alloy particle, and the potential-step experiment was carried out to determine the apparent chemical diffusion coefficient of hydrogen atom($D_{app}$) in the alloy. Since the alloy particle we used here was a dense, conductive sphere, the spherical diffusion model was employed for data analysis. $D_{app}$ was found to vary the order between $10^{-9}\;and\;10^{-10}[cm^2/s]$ over the course of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation process. Compared with the conventional composite film electrodes, the single particle measurements using the microelectrode gave more detailed, true information about the hydrogen storage alloy.

DETAILED EXAMINATION OF INVERSE-ANALYSIS PARAMETERS FOR PARTICLE TRAPPING IN SINGLE CHANNEL DIESEL PARTICULATE FILTER

  • Predictions of diesel particulate filtration are typically made by modeling of a particle collection, and providing particle trapping levels in terms of a pressure drop. In the present study, a series of single channel diesel particulate filter (DPF) experiments are conducted, the pressure traces are inversely analyzed and essential filtration parameters are deducted for model closure. A DPF filtration model is formulated with a non-linear description of soot cake regression. Dependence of soot cake porosity, packing density, permeability, and soot density in filter walls on convective-diffusive particle transportation is examined. Sensitivity analysis was conducted on model parameters, relevant to the mode of transition. Soot cake porosity and soot packing density show low degrees of dispersion with respect to the Peclet number and have asymptotes at 0.97 and $70\;kg/m^3$, respectively, at high Peclet number. Soot density in the filter wall, which is inversely proportional to filter wall Peclet number, controls the filtration mode transition but exerts no influence on termination pressure drop. The percolation constant greatly alters the extent of pressure drop, but is insensitive to volumetric flow rate or temperature of exhaust gas at fixed operation mode.

  • The demand for mass calculation of offsite consequence analysis to conduct exhaustive single-unit or multi-unit Level 3 PSA is increasing. In order to perform efficient offsite consequence analyses, the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute is conducting model optimization studies to minimize the analysis time while maintaining the accuracy of the results. A previous study developed a model optimization method using efficient plume segmentation and verified its effectiveness. In this study, we investigated the possibility of optimizing the model through particle size distribution setting by checking the reduction in analysis time and deviation of the results. Our findings indicate that particle size distribution setting affects the results, but its effect on analysis time is insignificant. Therefore, it is advantageous to set the particle size distribution as fine as possible. Furthermore, we evaluated the effect of multithreading and confirmed its efficiency. Future optimization studies should be conducted on various input factors of offsite consequence analysis, such as spatial grid settings.

Advanced Cryo-Electron Microscopy Technology: High Resolution Structure of Macromolecules

  • Recent cryo-electron microscopy (EM) studies reported the structure of various types of proteins at high resolution which is sufficient to visualize the intermolecular interaction at near atomic level. There are two main factors that cause the advances in cryo-EM; the development of image processing techniques, such as single particle analysis, and the improved electron detection devices. Although the atomic structures of small and asymmetric proteins are not yet to be determined by cryo-EM, this striking improvement implies the bright prospect of the application in biomedical studies. This study reviews the recently published studies reported high resolution structures using improved imaging analysis techniques and electron detectors. Furthermore, we will discuss about the future aspects of cryo-EM application.

Developing a new weir type using the smoothed particle hydrodynamic model

  • The aim of this paper is to conduct a hydrodynamic analysis of fluid flow over different weir types using the analytical solution, the physical model taken from another article, and numericalsimulations through the Smoothed particle hydrodynamic method (SPH) using the compiled DualSPHysics source code. The paper covers the field of real fluid dynamics that includes a description of different proposed types of weirs in various flow regimes and the optimal solution for the most efficiency structure shape. A detailed presentation of the method, the structure and it's characteristics are included. Apart from the single stepped weir, two other weir types are proposed: a Divided type and a Downstream slopped type. All of them are modeled using the SPH method.

  • Analysis and control of intake charge motion such as swirl and tumble are very important factors in improving the gasoline engine performance. In this paper, single-frame PTV (particle tracking velocimetry) is used to investigate intake tumble patterns in a steady flow test rig of gasoline engine with dual-intake-valve and pent-roof combustion chamber. Intake tumble pattern is quantified in accordance with blockage ratio of TIV (tumble intensifying valve) with single- frame PTv.The view of the instantaneous 2-D velocity field gives a realistic understanding of in-cylinder flow field. Thus it is confirmed that PTV is a effective tool in engine design. In conventional port, two tumble structures appear clearly, and the larger one is observed under the exhaust valve side and the smaller is right below the intake valve side. The larger vorticity is observed in TIV port, thus it is concluded that TIV have an effect on intensified tumble motion in cylinder flow.

Real time Implementation of SHE PWM in Single Phase Matrix Converter using Linearization Method

  • In this paper, a real time implementation of selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) using Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (RGA), Particle Swarm Optimization technique (PSO) and a new technique known as Linearization Method (LM) for Single Phase Matrix Converter (SPMC) is designed and discussed. In the proposed technique, the switching frequency is fixed and the optimum switching angles are obtained using simple mathematical calculations. A MATLAB simulation was carried out, and FFT analysis of the simulated output voltage waveform confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method. An experimental setup was also developed, and the switching angles and firing pulses are generated using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) processor. The proposed method proves that it is much applicable in the industrial applications by virtue of its suitability in real time applications.

  • Low frequency oscillations (LFOs) are load angle oscillations that have a frequency between 0.1-2.0 Hz. Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are very effective controllers in improvement of the damping of LFOs. PSSs are designed by linearized models of the power system. This paper presents a new model of the power system that has the advantages of the Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system and the multi machine power system. This model is named a single machine normal-bus (SMNB). The equations that describe the proposed model have been linearized and a lead PSS has been designed. Then, particle swarm optimization technique (PSO) is employed to search for optimum PSS parameters. To analysis performance of PSS that has been designed based on the proposed model, a few tests have been implemented. The results show that designed PSS has an excellent capability in enhancing extremely the dynamic stability of power systems and also maintain coordination between PSSs.
