  • The mechanism of optical interaction of two nanoholes, milled in an opaque gold film, by means of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation is investigated. The interaction depends on the polarization direction of the incident light when the nanohole pair is illuminated through uniform single antenna excitations. It is shown that by illuminating one of the nanoholes, under single antenna excitation, the other nanohole can be excited indirectly via propagated SPPs from the excited nanohole. In addition, it is found that the spectrum of electromagnetic power above the surface of the metallic film at an arbitrary point along the axis of the nanohole pair presents two resonant peaks. These peaks are due to the optical interaction between nanoholes, where the short- and long-wavelength peaks can be assigned to in-phase and antiphase interactions of magnetic dipoles relative to each nanohole, respectively. The magnetic coupled dipole approximation (MCDA) method confirms the simulation results.

  • Performance of downlink transmission strategies exploiting cooperative transmit diversity is investigated for distributed multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems, for which geographically distributed remote antennas (RA) in a cell can either communicate with distinct mobile stations (MS) or cooperate for a common MS. Statistical characteristics in terms of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the achievable capacity are analyzed for both cooperative and non-cooperative transmission schemes, and the preferred mode of operation for given channel conditions is presented using the analysis result. In particular, we determine an exact amount of the maximum achievable gain in capacity when RAs for signal transmission are selected based on the instantaneous channel condition, by deriving a general expression for the SINR of such antenna selection based transmission. For important special cases of selecting a single RA for non-cooperative transmission and selecting two RAs for cooperative transmission among three RAs surrounding the MS, closed-form formulas are presented for the SINR and capacity distributions.

  • A large area inductively coupled plasma which is applicable to LCD processing is built with a modified single loop RF antenna. Combination of parallel and series paths of RF current through the antenna induces local enhancement of plasma density, which in turn provides uniform plasma density near the substrate. The plasma density distribution is measured and compared with that of the conventional single loop antenna. Aisotropic etching of photoresist is performed, and it is found that etch uniformity is improved by 3% from 15% of the conventional etcher over 350$\times$300mm glass substrates. Photoresist etching rate and uniformity can be further improved by applying a periodic weak axial magnetic fieid.

  • This paper investigates the wireless powered two way relay network (WPTWRN), where two single-antenna users and one single-antenna relay firstly harvest energy from signals emitted by a multi-antenna power beacon (PB) and then two users exchange information with the help of the relay by using their harvested energies. In order to improve the energy transfer efficiency, energy beamforming at the PB is deployed. For such a network, to explore the performance limit of the presented WPTWRN, an optimization problem is formulated to obtain the achievable rate region bounds by jointly optimizing the time allocation and energy beamforming design. As the optimization problem is non-convex, it is first transformed to be a convex problem by using variable substitutions and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) and then solve it efficiently. It is proved that the proposed method achieves the global optimum. Simulation results show that the achievable rate region of the presented WPTWRN architecture outperforms that of wireless powered one way relay network architecture. Results also show that the relay location has significant impact on achievable rate region of the WPTWRN.

  • In this paper, we consider an amplify-and-forward (AF) full duplex (FD) massive-antenna relay (or base station) aiding communication between K single-antenna source and destination pairs whose transmissions are overheard by one single-antenna eavesdropper. Maximum ratio combining (MRC) and maximum ratio transmission (MRT) processing is employed at the relay. The secrecy performance of the system is then derived with both relay and destination being equipped with low resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The results show the detrimental effect of the eavesdropper's presence on the sum rate of the system.

  • In this paper, arbitrarily-shaped microstrip patch antenna in multi-layered is analyzed using spatial domain MoM. The triangular patch function is adopted here as the expansion function for planar arbitrarily-shaped microstrip. For example, an edge-fed rectangular patch antenna on a single-layered substrate is analyzed. The results show the agreement between the calculation and measurement.

  • The U-slot patch antenna has been found experimentally to provide impedance and gain bandwidths. Experiment and simulation results include impedance bandwidth, copolar and crosspolar-pattern characteristics and gain measurements. If one of the parameters such as patch width or feed position is varied, U-slot patch can also function as a dual-frequency antenna.

  • Ground radiation antenna in mobile devices is becoming an issue for satisfying both miniaturization and high performance. Ground radiation antenna controls the characteristic mode of the ground plane and couples this mode with the ground radiation antenna, thereby having good radiation performance. In this paper, the characteristic mode theory and applications of ground radiation antenna will be introduced. The operating mechanism of single band, wideband and dual-band ground radiation antennas are studied.

  • This paper investigates the performance of an amplify-and-forward (AF) two-way relaying system with antenna correlation. The system consists of two multiple-antenna sources, which exchange information via the aid of a single-antenna relay. In particular, we derive the exact outage probability expression. Furthermore, we provide a simple, tight closed-form lower bound for the outage probability. Based on the lower bound, we obtain the closed-form asymptotic outage probability and the average symbol error rate expressions at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which reveal the system's diversity order and coding gain with antenna correlation. To investigate the system's throughput performance with antenna correlation, we also derive a closed-form lower bound for the average sum-rate, which is quite tight from medium to high SNR regime. The analytical results readily enable us to obtain insight into the effect of antenna correlation on the system's performance. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to verify the analytical results.
