An experiment was conducted to figure out the atomization characteristics of a highly viscous biodiesel fuel with rice-barn oil applying and ultrasonic energy into it. A spray simulator for the droplet atomization, an ultrasonic system, and six different nozzles(3 pintle-type nozzles and 3 single hole-type nozzles) were made. To investigate effects of ultrasonic energy in a highly viscous liquid fuel, an immersion liquid method was used as a measurement method on droplet size distributions. It was found that the ultrasonic energy was effective for the atomization improvement of the rice-bran oil as a highly viscous biodiesel fuel and the factor나 such as the nozzle opening pressure, pin-edge angles, hole diameters, and collection distances affected the atomization of spray droplets.
As the combustion process of CWM consists of the water evaporation, the release and combustion of volatile matter, and the combustion of char for every particle, it is more complex than that of existent liquid fuel. Though the many studies on CWM combustion have been carried out by the single droplet using hanging methods or the multiple droplet using atomization methods, any report don't presents definite solution about the effects by the initial water evaporation and combustion of volatile. When CWM is suddenly exposed in the high temperature surroundings, the internal water evaporates and then each droplet builds up pores. Besides, porosity rate changes along the temperature of surroundings, the composition ratio of CWM, and the initial diameter of droplet. In result, because it affects the whole combustion rate, the combustion of CWM has complex mechanism as compared with the combustion of liquid or gas fuel. Therefore, concentrating on porous structure of CWM, this study has proceeded to acquire the basic data on the CWM injection combustion and closely examines the effects of the first stage combustion on the whole combustion by measuring the diameter variations, pore rate, mass fraction burned, and the internal temperature changes of CWM droplet. The results demonstrate that $60{\sim}70%$ of initial mass is reduced during water evaporation and volatile combustion period, and swelling rate, mass faction burned, and density variation are greatly concerned with atomization of CWM etc.
The objective of this study is to analyze the basic flame behavior characteristics using the single fuel droplet combustion of diesel, palm-based biodiesel, and canola-based biodiesel. The results were compared and analyzed through the post processed image, which was applied the threshold level for removing noise in the raw image. The raw image was taken by a high-speed camera during the entire combustion process. At the same time, the maximum flame length, which was measured by the application code of the MATLAB program, the ignition delay, and the combustion period were compared and analyzed.
This experimental study is to investigate the intermittent spray characteristics of a multi-hole nozzle in a heavy-duty DI diesel engine. Multi 8 hole$(d_n=0.25mm)$, Multi 3 hole$(d_n=0.42)$ and Sing hole nozzle$(d_n=0.25mm)$ were used in this experiment. By using the 2-D PDPA(phase Doppler particle analyzer), the droplet diameter and the velocity of a diesel spray injected intermittently from the multi and the single-hole nozzle into a still ambient were measured. In order to calculate the mean values such as mean velocity, SMD, AMD etc. and to analyze the intermittent characteristics, the time-window of 0.15ms were applied. In the spray, the small droplet$(D<10{\mu}m)$ was regarded as an air flow, and the correlation between the fuel droplet$(10{\mu}m and the air (low was examined. The normalized axial droplet-air relative velocity of the 8 hole, the 3 hole and the single hole nozzle was evaluated as 0.081, 0.067, 0.06 and in case of the radial droplet-air relative velocity, the normalized. value is 0.014, 0.013 and 0.008 respectively.
A numerical study of high pressure and temperature droplet vaporization and combustion is conducted by formulating one dimensional evaporation model and single-step chemical reaction in the mixture of hydrocarbon fuel and air. The ambient pressure ranged from atmospheric conditions to the supercritical conditions. In order to account for the real gas effect on fluid p-v-T properties in high pressure conditions, the modified Soave-Redlich-Kwong state equation is used in the evaluation of thermophysical properties. Some computational results are compared with Sato's experimental data for the validation of calculations in case of vaporization. The comparison between predictions and experiments showed quite a good agreement. Droplet surface temperature increased with increasing pressure. Ignition time increased with increasing initial droplet diameter. Temporal or spatial distribution of mass fraction, mass diffusivity, Lewis number, thermal conductivity, and specific heat were presented.
The present work pertains to a research program to study Molten Fuel-Coolant Interactions (MFCI), which may occur in a nuclear power plant during a hypothetical severe accident. Dynamics of the hot liquid (melt) droplet and the volatile liquid (coolant) were investigated in the MISTEE (Micro-Interactions in Steam Explosion Experiments) facility by performing well-controlled, externally triggered, single-droplet experiments, using a high-speed visualization system with synchronized digital cinematography and continuous X-ray radiography. The current study is concerned with the MISTEE-NCG test campaign, in which a considerable amount of non-condensable gases (NCG) are present in the film that enfolds the molten droplet. The SHARP images for the MISTEE-NCG tests were analyzed and special attention was given to the morphology (aspect ratio) and dynamics of the air/ vapor bubble, as well as the melt drop preconditioning. Energetics of the vapor explosion (conversion ratio) were also evaluated. The MISTEE-NCG tests showed two main aspects when compared to the MISTEE test series (without entrapped air). First, analysis showed that the melt preconditioning still strongly depends on the coolant subcooling. Second, in respect to the energetics, the tests consistently showed a reduced conversion ratio compared to that of the MISTEE test series.
This investigation reports on the study of the ambient turbulent effects on the droplet vaporization in the fuel spray combustion. For tractability, this discussion considers a single droplet in an infinite turbulent flow. In this numerical study, the low-Reynolds-number version of k-.epsilon. turbulence model was used to represent the turbulence effects. The set of two-dimensional conservation equations which describe the transport phenomena in turbulent flow using the mean flow quantities including the droplet internal laminar motion, are solved numerically with the finite difference procedure of Patankar(SIMPLER). The evaluation of the computational model is provided by two limiting cases: turbulent flow over the solid sphere and the laminar flow over a liquid drop. The results show that the turbulence effects are noticeable for the vaporization at high turbulence intensity (10-50%) which is encountered in a typical spray. The magnitude of turbulence effects mainly depends on the turbulent intensity. These effects are not sensitive to the Reynolds number in the range of 50 to 200, ambient temperature in the range of 700 to 1000.deg. K and the volatility.
A spray-wall impingement model for fuel sprays is proposed and implemented as a module into the KIVA-POSTECH code. The model is based on the single droplet experiments. The droplet behaviors after impingement are determined from experimental correlations. Different behaviors of impinged droplets depend on the wall temperature and the critical temperature of the fuel. Fuel film formation is taken into account so that the model can be applicable to any wall temperature and injection conditions. Computational results on a normal and on inclined wall are in good agreement for the spray shape and penetration. More validation against experiments and development of the heat transfer model are needed for further improvement.
This paper presents the characteristics of fuel spray in a diesel engine. In this paper, in order to obtain spray droplet size in a diesel engine, water was injected into the cylinder at room temperature and pressure by injection system. Spray droplet size was measured by liquid immersion technique with a lubricant used as an immersion liquid for spray water from injection nozzle. In this experiment, single hole type throttle nozzle are used at same operating conditions, which included opening pressure of nozzle, fuel delivery, and injection speed. Sauter mean diameter decrease with the increase of injection pressure and decrease in injection nozzle diameter. The rate of spray penetration increased with increasing injection pressure and diameter of injection nozzle at the constant spray conditions.
The burning characteristics of interacting droplets with internal circulation in a convective flow are numerically investigated at various particle arrangement and size difference. In this simulation some conditions are fixed, surround gas temperature is 1250K, pressure is 10 atm and drolet's initial temperature is 300K. The transient combustion of arranged droplets, the fixed droplet distances of 4 radii to 20 radii horizontally, is studied. And the range of size of droplet is 75${\mu}m$ to 100${\mu}m$. The results obtained from the present numerical analysis reveal that the transient flame configuration and retardation of droplet internal motion with the horizontal spacing substantially influence lifetime of interacting droplets. At a Reynolds number 10, lifetime of the three droplets with decreasing horizontal droplet spacing increases monotonically. But when droplet spacing decreases further to 4radii, Lifetime of interacting droplets are increase. So Lifetime of interacting droplets exhibits a strong dependence on the horizontal droplet spacing and size difference. It can be investigated well with these conditions to that of single burning droplet.
