A Study on the Tool Wear and Prediction of CBN, Poly Crystal and Single Crystal Diamond Tools in Cutting of Nickel (니켈절삭시 CBN, 소결 및 단결정 다이아몬드 공구의 마멸과 예측에 관한 연구)

  • Generally, the machinability of materials that have a good mechanical properties is poor. For materials having a high strength, high toughness, high strength in high temperature and wear resistance, it is difficult to remove a chip from work materials. These properties are well shown in a Nickel, so this metal is used in machine materials, semi-conductor industry, metal mold and optical fields etc. But it is limitted in use because of high cost and poor machinability. In this study, the cutting of pure Nickel was conducted to examine wear of CBN, poly crystal diamond (PCD) and single crystal diamond (SCD) tools. From the result, the CBN tool is superior to poly crystal diamond tools or single crystal diamond tools in terms of tool wear and tool wear is predictable from experimental data base.

  • In this a paper, a new method to measure the wear of the single crystal diamond(SCD) tool using image processing is presented. To increase resoultion, high magnifying lens is used and to enlarge the measurement field of view, a image region matching method is applied. The shape of SCD tool is modeled by mathematical analysis. Cutting edge chipping and wear are calculated by the model. This method is proved to be efficient in detecting a few micron of wear and cutting edge loss by chipping along the whole cutting edge.

  • Ultraprecision cutting of steels with geometrically defined single crystal diamond tools is handicapped by excessive tool wear. This paper presents a new approach to suppress the wear of single crystal diamond tool in cutting of steels. In general, it is said that the wear of diamond tool is caused by chemically reactive wear under high temperature and high pressure conditions. In order to suppress such chemical reactions, the time of contact between the diamond tool and the steel work in cutting was controlled by employing the intermittent cutting method such as fly-cutting. Series of intermittent cutting experiments have been carried out to control the tool-work contact time by changing one cycle of cutting length and cutting speed. The experimental results were shown that the tool wear was much dependent on the contact time regardless of the cutting speed, and that the wear was much suppressed by reducing the tool-work contact time. It is expected that the steels can be successfully cut with a single crystal diamond tool by controlling the contact time.

  • Nickel-phosphorus alloys are attractive materials for diamond turning applications such as fabrication of large optics and other high precision parts. It is also well-known that the higher phosphorus content of the alloys minimizes the diamond tool wear. Due to the weakness of electoless nickel plating that the phosphorus contents is limited to 13-14% (wgt), increased attention has been paid at electro-nickel plating which enables the alloys with 15-16% phosphorus. In this study, experiments were carried out to observe the wear characteristic of single crystal diamond tools in micro-grooving of electro-nickel plated drums. The experiments shows that long distance (50km) machining of micro-grooving on electro-nickel plated drum is possible with a single crystal diamond tool without any significant tool wear and defective machined surface.

  • A hypereutectic Aluminum-Silicon Alloy is widely used in the parts of automobile because of high-resistance and good strength. In this study, the cutting of hypereutectic A1-Si alloy for economical production was investigated by simulation. Tool life and the extraction rate of Si particles is inversely proportional to the depth of cut. When decreasing the depth of cut, the reduction of single crystal diamond tool cost and tool change time is achieved.

  • Ultra-precision machining was carried out on a electroless nickel materials using single crystal diamond tools. The effects of the cutting velocity, the tool length, the tool nose radius, the feed rate and depth of cut on the surface roughness were studied.   • Recently, expansion of micro-technology parts requires micro-precision machining technology. Micro-groove machining is important to fabricate micro-grating lens and many micro-parts such as microscope lens, fluidic graphite channel etc. Conventional groove fabrication methods such as etching and lithography have some problems in efficiency and surface integrity. But, mechanical micromachining methods using single crystal diamond tools can reduce these problems in chemical process. For this reason, microfabrication methods are expected to be very efficient, and widely studied. This study deals with machinability in micro-precision V-grooves machining of nickel plated layer using non-rotational single crystal diamond tool and 3-axis micro stages. Micro V-groove shape, chip formation and tool wear were investigated for the analysis of machinability of Ni plated layer.

Study on mirror-like surface machining of Al alloy with edge form of single crystal diamond tools (천연 다이아몬드 인선형태에 의한 Al 합금의 경면절삭에 관한 연구)

  • Ultra precision cutting should be satisfied with two conditions of Mirror Like and shape grade, and especially Mirror Like depends on surface roughness. In this study, in order to develop Mirror Cutting for Al alloy, this was done with edge form of single crystal diamond tool divided into R type and S type. Surface roughness machined by S type tool is more satisfactory than by R type tool, being the lowest value of 13.8nm. In addition, Mirror surface can reach above 90% of reflection rate by both R type and S type tool, but machined surface by R type tool has much more fine fracture portions rather than by S type tool. Even though feed rate decreases from 5.mu.m to 1.mu.m, surface roughness doesn't show improvement.

  • To obtain the surface roughness with range from l0nm to In n need a ultra-Precision machine, cutting condition and the study of materials. And n have to also consider the chip and vibration of diamond tool during processing. In this paper, the cutting conditions for getting mirror surface of aluminum alloy have been examined experimentally by using ultra-precision turning and single crystal diamond tool. In generally, the cutting conditions have effect on the surface roughness in ultra-precision turning. The result of surface roughness was measured by the ZYGO New View 200.
