An instrument was developed for the simultaneous determination of gas- and aerosol-phase nitrous acid (HONO). Gaseous HONO (HONO(g)) was sampled by a diffusion scrubber and particulate nitrite ($NO_2\;^-$(p)) was collected by a particle growth chamber. The collected samples were analyzed in time-sharing manner, based on the peroxynitrite-induced luminol chemiluminescence. The automated system was found to be sensitive with 13 pptv of detection limit, fast with 4 min. of sampling frequency, and simple and affordable to construct and operate. The system was optimized by adjusting the experimental parameters. The system was applied to the field measurement of gas- and particle-phase HONO during the springtime of 2004 in Gwangju, South Korea. HONO(g) concentrations varied diurnally from 200 pptv around 3 P.M. to 800 pptv at 5 A.M. The variation of $NO_2\;^-$(p) was not significant with the maximum of 240 pptv at 11 P.M. and the minimum of 170 pptv at 4 P.M., not displaying distinct characteristics.
Structural parameter evaluation and external force estimation are two important parts of structural health monitoring. But the structural parameter identification with limited input information is still a challenging problem. A new simultaneous identification method in time domain is proposed in this study to identify the structural parameters and evaluate the external force. Each sampling point in the time history of external force is taken as the unknowns in force evaluation. To reduce the number of unknowns for force evaluation the time domain measurements are divided into several windows. In each time window the structural excitation is decomposed by orthogonal polynomials. The time-variant excitation can be represented approximately by the linear combination of these orthogonal bases. Structural parameters and the coefficients of decomposition are added to the state variable to be identified. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) is augmented and selected as the mathematical tool for the implementation of state variable evaluation. The proposed method is validated numerically with simulation studies of a time-invariant linear structure, a hysteretic nonlinear structure and a time-variant linear shear frame, respectively. Results from the simulation studies indicate that the proposed method is capable of identifying the dynamic load and structural parameters fairly accurately. This method could also identify the time-variant and nonlinear structural parameter even with contaminated incomplete measurement.
The Purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between the local heat release rate and CH concentration have been investigated by numerical simulations of methane-air premixed flames. And simultaneous CH and OH PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) measurement has been also conducted for lean premixed flame as well as for laminar flames. Numerical simulations are conducted for laminar premixed flames and turbulent ones by using PREMIX in CHEMKIN and two dimensional DNS code with GRI mechanism version 2.11, respectively. In the case of laminar premixed flame, the distance between the peak of heat release rate and that of CH concentration is under $91{\mu}m$ for all equivalence ratio calculated in present work. Even for the premixed flame in high intensity turbulence, the distribution of the heat release rate coincides with that of CH mole fraction. For CH PLIF measurements in the laminar premixed flame burner, CH fluorescence intensity as a function of equivalence ratio shows a similar trend with CH mole fraction computed by GRI mechanism. Simultaneous CH and OH PLIF measurement gave us useful information of instantaneous reaction zone. In addition, CH fluorescence can be measured even for lean conditions where CH mole fraction significantly decreases compared with that of stoichiometric condition. It was found that CH PLIF measurements can be applicable to the estimation of the spatial fluctuations of heat release rate in the engine combustion.
Simultaneous measurements using a scanning spectrograph system and transmissometer were performed for the first time over an urban site in Gwangju, Korea, to derive the ambient $NO_2$ volume mixing ratio. The differential slant column densities retrieved from the scanning spectrograph system were converted to volume mixing ratios using the light traveling distance along the scanning line of sight derived from the transmissometer light extinction coefficients. To assess the performance of this system, we compared the derived $NO_2$ volume mixing ratios with those measured by an in situ chemiluminescence monitor under various atmospheric conditions. For a cloudless atmosphere, the linear correlation coefficient (R) between the two data sets (i.e., data derived from the scanning spectrograph and from the in situ monitor) was 0.81; the value for a cloudy atmosphere was 0.69. The two sets of $NO_2$ volume mixing ratios were also compared for various wind speeds. We also consider the measurement errors, as estimated from an error propagation analysis.
Simultaneous 3-D LDV measurements of the in-cylinder flows of three different engine setups were summarized for the quantification of the flow characteristics in each vertical or horizontal plane, and in entire cylinder volume. The ensemble averaged-velocity, tumble and swirl motions, and turbulent kinetic energy during the intake and compression strokes were examined from the measured velocity data (approximately 2,000 points for each engine setup). The better spatial resolution of the 3-D LDV allows measurements of the instantaneous flow structures, yielding more valuable information about the smaller flow structures and the cycle-to-cycle variation of these flow patterns. Tumble and swirl ratios, and turbulent kinetic energy were quantified as planar and volumetric quantities. The measurements and calculation results were animated for the visualization of the flow, and hence ease to analysis.
Thermal analysis means the analysis of a change in a property of a sample, which is related to an imposed temperature alteration. Measurements are usually made with increasing temperature, but isothermal measurements or measurements made with decreasing temperatures are also possible. In fact, any measuring technique can be made into a thermal analysis technique by adding thermal control. Simultaneous use of multiple techniques increases the power of thermal analysis, and modern instrumentation has permitted extensive growth of application. The basic theories of thermal analysis are well developed and some of them are explained in this paper.
Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors have been most widely used in terrestrial robotic applications because they can provide dense and precise measurements of the surrounding environments. However, the reliability of LiDAR measurements can considerably vary due to the different reflectivities of laser beams to the reflecting surface materials. This study presents a robust LiDAR-based mapping method for the varying laser reflectivities in indoor environments using the framework of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). The proposed method can minimize the performance degradations in the SLAM accuracy by checking and discarding potentially unreliable LiDAR measurements in the SLAM front-end process. The gaps in point-cloud maps created by the proposed approach are filled by a Gaussian process regression method. Experimental results with a mobile robot platform in an indoor environment are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.
Floating LiDAR systems (FLSs) are used in many countries because they are easier to install than stationary weather towers, have low maintenance costs, and can be installed in deep sea areas. However, FLSs are rarely used in Korea due to a lack of clear evaluation criteria to verify the reliability and uncertainty of their measurements. This study is the first to verify the reliability of FLSs in Korea with one-year simultaneous observation of six lidar systems - two fixed and four floating systems - in sea areas of Gunsan and Yeonggwang. The reliability of FLSs measurement data was verified by comparison between fixed and floating systems. Moreover, differences between existing wind resource maps and the data observed from the six points were analyzed and wind resource maps were calibrated. The results show a return rate of more than 95 % of the observed data and strong correlations between fixed and floating systems (average R2 of 0.977). Additionally, errors in wind speed predictions to produce a wind resource map could be significantly reduced from 5.7 % to 0.6 % after calibrations with the observation data.
In order to see the effect of die deformation on the forming analysis of sheet metals, the draw-ins, strains, and spring-backs of an automotive fender panels are numerically simulated by considering the die deformation found by the simultaneous structural analysis of press and dies. By coupling the forming analysis and the structural analysis, the die deformation is simultaneously taken into account in the forming process. Furthermore, for the consideration of load difference transferred among the upper die, punch, and blank holder due to the changes in sheet thickness, the gap elements are employed instead of the blank sheet in the structural analysis. The numerical simulation results of an automotive finder draw panel are compared with the measurements. The comparison of the forming and spring-back analysis results between the rigid die and the deformed die shows that the consideration of tool deformation can predict more accurately the forming and spring-back of sheet metals.
In this study, the quantification of soot particles in laminar diffusion flame with LII/LIS methods was performed. In these quantification, soot diameter, number density and volume fraction are included. For the quatification of soot particles, calibration tests are needed and the development of algorithm has to be performed. So, in this study, extinction and scattering test at co-flow burner were performed to acquire calibration data. And algorithm for LII/LIS simultaneous measurement for the quantification of soot were developed. The algorithm, which was the quantification of simultaneous photographing using one ICCD camera, to measure LII/LIS signal simultaneously, the best fitted light intensity and acquisition time was needed.
