  • The hear transfer mechanism initiating the friction welding is examined and a transient three dimensional heat conduc-tion model for the welding of two dissimilar cylindrical metal bars is investigated. The cylindrical metal bars are made of materials made of A2024 and SM 45C. Numerical simulations of heat flow are performed using the finite volume method. Respectively. Commercial FLUENT code is used in the heat flow simulation and maximum temperature and distribution of temperature are calculated. Temperature of friction welded joining face is compared with the temperature distribution measured by experiment and numerical simulation. The maximum temperature of friction welded joining face is lower than melting point of A2024-T6 aluminum alloy using insert metal. The temperature distribution of friction welded join- ing face with insert metal is more uniform than that of without inset metal.

  • The present study numerically investigates the flow and heat transfer characteristics of rib-induced secondary flow in a cooling channel with staggered V-shaped ribs, extruded on both walls. The rib-height-to-hydraulic diameter ration (h/$D_h$) is 0.17; the rib pitch-to-height ratio (p/h) equals 2.8; the Reynolds number is 50,000. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. The present results are compared with those for a continuous V-shaped rib. Computational results show that, for average heat transfer rate the staggered V-shaped rib gives about 2.5 times higher values than the continuous V-shaped rib, while, for the streamwise pressure drop the former gives about 5 times higher values than the latter. Consequently, for the thermal performances, based on the equal pumping power condition, the staggered one gives about 2 times higher values than the continuous one. Also, for the staggered V-shaped rib, complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the duct due to the snaking flow in the streamwise direction, and more uniform heat transfer distributions are obtained.

  • The internal cooling passage of a gas turbine blade can be modeled as a ribbed channel. Most studies have considered square ribs. However, the ribs can be rounded due to improper manufacturing or wear during the operation. Hence, we have studied two different rib geometries in this study, i.e. square and semicircle ribs. We have performed large eddy simulations (LES) and experiments to validate the results from the simulations. LES predicts the detailed flow and thermal features, which have not been captured by simulations using turbulence models. By investigating the instantaneous flow and thermal fields, we propose the mechanisms for the local heat transfer distribution between ribs. For both the geometries, heat transfer is enhanced by the entrainment of the cold fluid by the vortical motions and impingement of the entrained cold fluid on the ribs.

  • Turbulent flow and heat transfer to water at supercritical pressure flowing in vertical pipes is investigated using direct numerical simulation (DNS). A conservative space-time discretization scheme for variable-density flows at low Mach numbers is adopted in the present study to treat steep variations of fluid properties at supercritical pressure just above the thermodynamic critical point. The fluid properties at these conditions are obtained using PROPATH and used in the form of tables in the simulations. The buoyancy influence induced by strong variation of density across the pseudo-critical temperature proved to play an important role in turbulent flow and heat transfer at supercritical state. Depending on the degree of buoyancy influence, turbulent heat transfer may be enhanced or significantly deteriorated, resulting in local hot spots along the heated surface.

  • In the present study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of a large plate heat exchanger are investigated numerically. The flow passages are very complicated due to the grooved corrugation patterns of the plate surface so that the detailed mesh and the large amount of the computation time have to be required in the numerical simulation for the conjugate heat transfer analysis. In order to accomplish the efficient and fast analysis of the heat transfer characteristics in the plate heat exchanger, a semimicroscopic method using the porous media model has been investigated numerically. The results showed that the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop, which are respectively presented with Colburn j-factor and Fanning f-factor, are in a good agreement between the detailed mesh and the porous media model. The results of the present study could be applicable to the numerical analysis of entire flow passages in the large plate heat exchanger using porous media treatment.

  • In the present article, we investigate numerically turbulent flow of air through compound rectangular channels. Large eddy simulation(LES) is employed for unsteady turbulence modeling. LES gives better predictions for the axial mean velocity distribution than those of other turbulent models. Strong large-scale quasi-periodic flow oscillations are observed in most of the geometries investigated. Such large-scale flow oscillations in compound rectangular channels are similar to the quasi-periodic flow pulsation through the gaps between fuel rod bundle in nuclear reactor. It exists in any longitudinal connecting gap between two flow channels. The frequency of this flow oscillation is determined by the geometry of the gap. The large scale cross motions through the rectangular compound channels induce significant heat transfer enhancement of the compound channel flow.

  • In the previous study, it is proved by numerical simulation that the baffle shaped as the porous plate installed in the inlet chambers improves the redistribution of the flow injecting to the tube bundles. In the present study, numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the effects of the flow distributors on the thermal characteristics of the shell and tube heat exchangers. The flow fields have been analysed by the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solvers including the thermal conditions on the shell sides. The numerical results showed that the presence of the baffles improves the redistribution of the heat transfer to the tube bundles though the overall performance drop slightly on the present flow conditions.

  • Combustor development requires high fidelity simulation capable of predicting recirculation zone (RZ), temperature field, and pollutant emission. Swirling flow is widely used in combustor for its benefits in efficient mixing and flame stabilization by RZ. Large eddy simulation (LES) is used to calculate swirling flow in an expanding pipe [1], and shows higher accuracy than RANS. Reactive flow modeling using LES and flamelet model is validated with experiments by Barlow et al. [4] and Masri et al. [3]. Finally, heat transfer simulation of Samsung Techwin's combustor liner is presented.

  • An experimental study is presented for a flow field in a two dimensional wavy channels by PIV. This flow has two major applications such as a blood flow simulation and the enhancement of heat transfer in a heat exchanger. While the numerical flow visualization results have been limited to the fully developed cases, existing experimental results of this flow were simple qualitative ones by smoke or dye streak test. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to produce quantitative flow data for fully developed and developing flow regimes by the Correlation Based Correction PIV (CBC PIV) and to conjecture the analogy between flow characteristics and heat transfer enhancement with low pumping power. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the onset position of the transition and the global mixing, which results in transfer enhancement. PIV results on the Fully developed and developing flow in a wavy channel at Re=500, 1000 and 2000 are obtained. for the case Reynolds Number equals 500, the PIV results are compared with the finite difference numerical solution.

  • Flow boiling in parallel microchannels has received attention as an effective heat sink mechanism for power-densities encountered in microelectronic equipment. the bubble dynamics coupled with boiling heat transfer in microchannels is still not well understood due to the technological difficulties in obtaining detailed measurements of microscale two-phase flows. In this study, complete numerical simulation is performed to further clarify the dynamics of flow boiling in microchannels. The level set method for tracking the liquid-vapor interface is modified to include the effects of phase change and contact angle. The method is further extended to treat the no-slip and contact angle conditions on the immersed solid. Also, the reverse flow observed during flow boiling in parallel microchannels has been investigated. Based on the numerical results, the effects of channel shape and inlet area restriction on the bubble growth, reverse flow and heat transfer are quantified.
