  • A simplified numerical procedure have proposed to trace the dynamic behaviour of offshore tubulars subjected to lateral collision impacts. The local denting and overall bending deformation of the struck tubular are represented by a non-linear spring and an elastic visco-plastic beam respectively. In this method a temporal finite difference method and a spacial finite element method are employed. Using this method various boundary conditions are able to considered and their effects on the extent of damage can be quantified. The extent of damage due to collision can be obtained as results of the dynamic analysis. The predictions using the proposed method have been correlated with existing test results and then the reliability of the procedure has been substantiated. The characteristics of the dynamic response of tubulars under lateral impacts are compared for simply supported roller and fixed end conditions and their effects on the extent of damage are specfied.

  • This paper presents the series multiple tuned mass dampers (STMDs) to suppress the resonant vibrations of railway bridges under the passage of high-speed trains (HSTs). A STMD device consisting of two spring-mass-damper units connected each other in series is installed on the bridge. In solution, bridge is modeled as a simply-supported Euler-Bernoulli beam with constant cross-section, and vehicle is simulated as a series of moving forces with constant speed. By the assumed mode method, the governing equations of motion of the beam-TMD device coupled system traversed by a moving train are obtained. The optimum values for the parameters of the STMD device are obtained for the criterion based on the minimization of the maximum dynamic displacement of the beam at its midspan. Single TMD and multiple TMDs in parallel are also considered for demonstration of the STMD device's performance. The results show that STMDs are effective in bridge vibration suppression and robust to parameters' change in the main system and the absorber itself.

  • Using moving support finite elements, seismic analysis of statically-determinate beams subjected to support motions is performed to show its accuracy and its ease of use. Examples of cantilever and simply-supported beam subjected to support motions are illustrated and the numerical results are compared with the analytical solutions. The examples show the elements facilitate modeling beams with the conventional 2-noded, Hermitian, Euler-Bernoulli beam element. The comparisons of the results with analytical solutions show good agreements with high accuracy.

  • In simply supported composite beams, the neutral axis of the composite cross section usually is located the top flange of the steel I-shape, so that the top flange does not impart much strength to the member. This suggests that omitting the top flange entirely could be a means to lower the cost of the beam without greatly reducing the strength. The purpose of this investigation is to research flexural strength and behavior of the composite beams with reduced top flange of steel. Five specimens with H and inverted T steel section were tested. As the test results, comparison of the experimental to computed full-plastic moment, and variations of flexural strength with reduced top flange were analyzed.

  • This paper presents an efficient and accurate coupled beam model for piezoelectric bimorphs based on improved first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The model combines the equivalent single layer approach for the mechanical displacements and a layerwise modeling for the electric potential. General electric field function is proposed to reasonably approximate the through-the-thickness distribution of the applied and induced electric potentials. Layerwise defined shear correction factor (k) accounting for nonlinear shear strain distribution is introduced into both the shear stress resultant and the electric displacement integration. Analytical solutions for free vibrations and forced response under electromechanical loads are obtained for the simply supported piezoelectric bimorphs with series or parallel arrangement, and the numerical results for various length-to-thickness ratios are compared with the exact two-dimensional piezoelasticity solution. Excellent predictions with low error estimates of local and global responses as well as the modal frequencies are observed.

  • In this study, free vibration analyses of symmetric laminated cantilever and simply supported damaged composite beams are investigated by using finite element method (FEM). Free vibration responses of damaged beams are examined using Euler Bernoulli beam and classical lamination theories. A computer code is developed by using MATLAB software to determine the natural frequencies of a damaged beam. The local damage zone is assumed to be on the surface lamina of the beam by broken fibers after impact. The damaged zone is modeled as a unidirectional discontinuous lamina with $0^{\circ}$ orientations in this study. Fiber volume fraction ($v_f$), fiber aspect ratio ($L_f/d_f$), damage length ($L_D$) and its location (${\lambda}/L$), fiber orientation and stacking sequence parameters effects on natural frequencies are investigated. These parameters are affected the natural frequency values significantly.

  • In this study, free vibration analysis of an edge cracked multilayered symmetric sandwich beams made of functionally graded materials are investigated. Modelling of the cracked structure is based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics theory. Material properties of the functionally graded beams change in the thickness direction according to the power and exponential laws. To represent functionally graded symmetric sandwich beams more realistic, fifty layered beam is considered. Composition of each layer is different although each layer is isotropic and homogeneous. The considered problem is carried out within the Timoshenko first order shear deformation beam theory by using finite element method. A MATLAB code developed to calculate natural frequencies for clamped and simply supported conditions. The obtained results are compared with published studies and excellent agreement is observed. In the study, the effects of crack location, depth of the crack, power law index and slenderness ratio on the natural frequencies are investigated.

  • This paper presents a theoretical investigation in free vibration of sigmoid functionally graded beams with variable cross-section by using Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The mechanical properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the beam, and obey a two power law of the volume fraction of the constituents. Governing equation is reduced to an ordinary differential equation in spatial coordinate for a family of cross-section geometries with exponentially varying width. Analytical solutions of the vibration of the S-FGM beam are obtained for three different types of boundary conditions associated with simply supported, clamped and free ends. Results show that, all other parameters remaining the same, the natural frequencies of S-FGM beams are always proportional to those of homogeneous isotropic beams. Therefore, one can predict the behaviour of S-FGM beams knowing that of similar homogeneous beams.

  • The aim of the investigation described in this paper is to study the nonlinear parametric vibrations and stability of a simply-supported viscoelastic beam with an intra-span spring. Taking into account a time-dependent tension inside the beam as the main source of parametric excitations, as well as employing a two-parameter rheological model, the equations of motion are derived using Newton's second law of motion. These equations are then solved via a perturbation technique which yields approximate analytical expressions for the frequency-response curves. Regarding the main parametric resonance case, the local stability of limit cycles is analyzed. Moreover, some numerical examples are provided in the last section.
