A procedure of free span and fatigue analysis of offshore pipelines was made per DNV-RP-F105, 2002. The new method includes the axial force and deflection load in pipelines. The screening criteria were used to calculate the allowable span lengths. The screening criteria allow small amplitudes of vortex-induced vibration due to wave and current loading. However, the induced pipe stress is very small and usually below the limit stress of a typical S-N curve. A simplified method was established to calculate the fatigue damage due to long-term current distribution. The long-term current statistics was assumed with a 3-parameter Weibull distribution. The fatigue damage was estimated for the span lengths obtained from the screening criteria for various conditions. Sample calculations show the effect of axial force for various boundary conditions.

Recently, the offshore structures are increasingly constructed to explore the natural resources. These offshore structures are to be designed to resist the repetitive wave forces. A probabilistic method for the fatigue analysis of offshore concrete structures is presented in this study. The present spectral fatigue analysis calculates wave forces first and then the transfer functions for unit waves from which stress spectra are determined. The calculated fatigue stresses may then be used to evaluate the fatigue damage of concrete structures. A simplified model for the estimation of fatigue damage of the structures, which employs only the probabilistic moments of the peak stress distribution without direct integration, is also proposed. The present study allows more realistic fatigue analysis of offshore concrete structures.

Internal defects are a major concern in the casting process because they have a significant influence on the strength and fatigue life of casting products. In general, they cause stress concentration and can be a starting point of cracks. Therefore, it is important to understand the effects of internal defects on mechanical properties such as fatigue life. In this study, fatigue experiments on tensile specimens with internal defects were performed. The internal defects in the casting product were scanned by an industrial CT scanner, and its shape was simplified by ellipsoidal primitives for the structural and fatigue analysis. The analysis results were compared with experimental results for casting products with internal defects. It was demonstrated that it is possible to consider internal defects of casting products in stress and fatigue analysis. The proposed method provides a tool for the prediction of the fatigue life of casting products and the investigation of the effects of internal defects on mechanical performance.

From the viewpoint of linear fracture mechanics, the crack propagation behavior of two different structures having the same K-a relationship could be considered identical. In this study the stress distribution in an infinitely wide cracked plate with the same K-a relationship as in a real structure is defined as the equivalent stress distribution. Fatigue life of a real structural element can be predicted by applying the equivalent stress distribution to a simple structural element, and performing a fatigue crack propagation analysis. The K-a relationship for a structural member can be estimated by a finite element method or a simplified prediction method. The validity to obtain effective crack driving stresses by using the equivalent stress-distribution is examined.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and to identify factors affecting malnutrition in hemodialysis patients. Methods: Data were collected from a convenience sample of 125 hemodialysis patients who agreed to participate in the study, between August 1 and October 4, 2014. Five structured questionnaires were used: Patient-generated Subjective Global Assessment, Simplified Nutritional Appetite Questionnaire, Self-rating Depression Scale, Fatigue Scale, and Family Support Scale. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, ${\chi}^2$-test, and stepwise multiple regression analysis by using SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. Results: Of 125 patients, 30.4% were found to be malnourished. Malnutrition was related to age, family household income, depression, fatigue, social support, appetite, and levels of C-reactive protein and serum albumin. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that appetite, C-reactive protein level, fatigue, and albumin level were significant factors affecting malnutrition in hemodialysis patients. Conclusion: Regular and consistent nutritional assessment is essential in hemodialysis patients. Nurses who care for hemodialysis patients need to consider the factors identified from these findings when assessing their patients' nutritional status and needs.

With developing the next generation high speed railway, there need to be plans to make sure of running safety though researchs on the crack and break of rail by rolling contact fatigue. Therefore, this study performed the parametric analysis effecting on the fatigue life of rail using simplified equations. It analyzed the internal stress of rail according to the track quality, train velocity, wheel radius, track stiffness, sleeper space, wheel load. For the more, via the finite element method, it analyzed shear force on the rail head which could be changed by the early length of crack, angle of crack and temperature. As a result, this study continued the main parameter effecting on the fatigue life of rail.
Different versions of a damage index (DI) along with a formulation to find the number of cycles at failure due to fatigue, applicable to reinforced concrete (RC) structures are presented. These are based on an energetic analysis method and applicable to both global and local levels. The required data can be found either from the numerical simulation of structures or from the experimental tests. A computer program has been developed to simulate numerically the nonlinear behavior of RC columns under cyclic loading. The proposed DI gives a regular distribution of structural damages up to failure and is validated by the results of the tests carried out on RC columns subjected to cyclic loading. In general, the local and global damage indices give approximately similar results, while each of them has its own advantages. The advantage of the implicit version of DI is that, it allows the comparison of the results with those of the monotonic loading case, while the explicit version makes it possible to estimate the number of loading cycles at failure due to fatigue, and the advantage of the simplified version is that; the monotonic loading data is not needed for the cyclic loading case.
Fatigue life prediction methodology of the rubber component made of vulcanized natural rubber under variable amplitude loadings was studied. The displacement-controlled fatigue tests were conducted at different levels and the maximum Green-Lagrange strain was selected as damage parameters. A fatigue life curve of the rubber represented by the maximum Green-Lagrange strain was determined from the nonlinear finite element analysis. The transmission load history of SAE as variable amplitude loading was used to perform the fatigue life prediction. And then a signal processing of variable loading by racetrack and simplified rainflow cycle counting methods were performed. The modified miner's rule as cumulative damage summation was used. Finally, when the gate value is 30%, the predicted fatigue life of the rubber component agreed well with the experimental fatigue lives with a factor of two.

Two stroke low speed diesel engines are widely used for marine propulsion or as power plant prime mover. These engines have many merits which includes higher thermal efficiency, mobility and durability. Yet various annoying vibrations occur sometimes in ships or at the plant itself. Of these vibrations, torsional vibration is very important and dictates a careful investigation during the engme's initial design stage for safe operation. With the rule and limit on torsional vibration in place, shaft strength fatigue due to torsional vibration however demands further analysis which possibly can be incorporated in the classification societies' rule and limit. In addition, the shaft's torsional vibration stresses can be calculated equivalently from accumulated fatigue cycles number due to transient torsional vibration in time domain. In this paper, authors suggest a new estimation method combined with Palmgren-Miner equation. A 6S70MC-C ($25,320ps{\times}91rpm$) engine for ship propulsion was selected as a case study. Angular velocity was measured, instead of shaft's strain, for simplified measurement and it was converted to torsional vibration stress for accumulated fatigue cycle numbers in shafting life time. Likewise, the accumulated fatigue calculation was compared with shaft fatigue strength limit. This new method can be further realized and confirmed in ship with two stroke low speed diesel engine.

An analytical scheme for predicting the crack aspect pattern of materials which contain twin surface cracks was developed. Fatigue tests were performed on twin surface cracked PMMA plate specimens to obtain the interaction factor accounting for the interference effect of adjacent cracks. Here, the interaction factor is defined as the ratio of the stress intensity factor for twin surface cracks to that for a single surface crack. From the analysis of the fatigue test result, the interaction factor was presented as the ninth-order polynomial expression having a function of dimensionless crack spacing ratio. Then the polynomial expression was incorporated into the prediction program of the crack aspect pattern for twin surface cracked materials. And, the interaction effect and the coalescence condition of adjacent cracks were simplified in the newly developed prediction scheme of the crack aspect pattern. The predicted crack growth pattern using the prediction scheme was compared with test data from PMMA specimen. The predicted pattern agreed well with the test data.
