  • Nodal transport methods are proposed for solving the simplified even-parity neutron transport (SEP) equation. These new methods are attributed to the success of existing nodal diffusion methods such as the Polynomial Expansion Nodal and the Analytic Function Expansion Nodal Methods, which are known to be very effective for solving the neutron diffusion equation. Numerical results show that the simplified even-parity transport equation is a valid approximation to the transport equation and that the two nodal methods developed in this study also work for the SEP transport equation, without conflict. Since accuracy of methods is easily increased by adding node unknowns, the proposed methods will be effective for coarse mesh calculation and this will also lead to computation efficiency.

  • There is a purpose of this study for the proposal of the optimum technique utilized for the vibration design initial step. The stiffened plate structure for the ship hull is made for analysis model. To begin with, dynamic characteristics of stiffened plate structure is analysed using FEM. Main vibrational mode of the structure is decided in the analytical result of FEM. The simplified equation on the natural frequency of the main vibrational mode is induced. Next, sensitivity analysis is carried out using the simplified equation, and rate of change of dynamic characteristics is calculated. Then, amount of design variable is calculated using this sensitivity value and optimum structural modification method. The change of natural frequency is made to be an objective function. Thickness of panel, cross section moment of stiffener and girder become a design variable. The validity of the optimization method using simplified equation is examined. It is shown that the result effective in the optimum modification for natural frequency of the stiffened plate structure.

  • Nodal transport methods are studied for the solution of two dimensional discrete-ordinates, simplified even-parity transport equation(SEP) which is known to be an approximation to the true transport equation. The polynomial expansion nodal method(PEN) and the analytic function expansion nodal method(AFEN)which have been developed for the diffusion theory are used for the solution of the discrete-ordinates form of SEP equation. Our study shows that while the PEN method in diffusion theory can directly be converted without complication, the AFEN method requires a theoretical modification due to the nonhomogeneous property of the transport equation. The numerical results show that the proposed two methods work well with the SEP transport equation with higher accuracies compared with the conventional finite difference method.

  • The AASHTO wheel load distribution factor (LDF) equation has been with us since 1931 and has undergone minor modifications. In 1994, an entirely new procedure was introduced in the AASHTO LRFD code based on parametric studies and finite element analyses. However, this LDF equation involves a longitudinal stiffness parameter, the design of which is not initially known. Thus, an iterative procedure is required to correctly determine the LDF value. The increased level of complexity puts undue burden on the designer resulting in a higher likelihood for misinterpretation and error. In this study, based on current AASHTO LRFD framework, a new simplified equation is developed that does not require an iterative procedure. A total of 43 representative composite steel girder bridges are selected and analyzed using a finite element model. The new simplified equation produces LDF values that are always conservative when compared to those obtained from the finite element analyses and are generally greater than the LDF obtained using AASHTO LRFD specification. Therefore, the proposed simplified equation is expected to streamline the determination of LDF for bridge design without sacrificing safety.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a simplified method that could predict the strength of concrete filled steel tube (CFT) columns applicable to high strength material under combined axial compression and flexure. The simplified method for determining the strength of CFT columns is based on the interaction curve of the section approached by a polygonal connection of the points. These points are determined by using symmetrical properties of the CFT section. For each point, a simple equation is proposed to determine the strength of the slender columns under compression and flexure. The simple equation was adjusted with results of elasto-plastic analysis results. Validation of the simplified method is undertaken by comparison with data from the test conducted at Kyushu University. These results confirm the fact that the simplified method could accurately and reliably predict the strength of CFT columns under combined axial compression and flexure.

  • The inter-turn fault (ITF) causes the negative sequence components in the d -q voltage equation due to an increase in the unbalance of three-phase input currents. For this reason, d -q voltage equation become complicate as the voltage equation is classified into positive and negative components. In this study, we propose a simplified d -q equivalent circuit of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor under ITF state. First, we proposed modeling method for d -q current based on the finite element method simulation results. Then, we developed the simplified d -q equivalent circuit by applying the proposed d -q current modeling.

  • In this study, a simplified equation for settlement evaluation suitable for the special conditions of a counter facility is suggested. Recently, counter facilities, especially breakwaters, are constructed on soft ground in distant seas as new-port development projects. A counter facility that resists the external forces by self-weight settles easily when constructed on soft ground. Settlement in a counter facility and breakwater is not an important factor for maintenance than a land facility. On the other hand, the current settlement evaluation criteria are excessive for conducting a safety inspection. A settlement evaluation from a safety inspection followed by "Detailed Guidelines for a safety inspection on a counter facility" is used. A simplified equation was proposed to calculate the maximum settlement by applying the allowable residual settlement or settlement stability evaluation results. The suitability of the simplified equation was assessed compared to the assessed rating from the settlement survey results. The proposed simplified equation showed that the settlement evaluation rating had been upgraded. The proposed simplified equation is expected to be used to evaluate the practical structural stability and functional performance.

  • Daylight is very useful to control the indoor environment, and can save energy in buildings. So it is necessary to evaluate the daylighting performance of buildings. We proposed a simplified equation that can be used in the early stages of design. And we verified the equation by using the measured illuminance data from the 1/5 scale model. We compared the calculated indoor illuminances and measured illuminance including Daylight Factors of scale model in order to verify the applicability of the simplified equation, and proved the analyzed values are acceptable. When we have a target value of the Daylight Factor, we just have to determine the window area, transmittance of the glazing system, and indoor surface reflectance, then can achieve it with this simplified equation.

  • The effect of static preload on the dynamic properties of rubber materials is rather important, especially when good isolation characteristics are required at high frequencies. However, there are still few papers for dynamic characteristics of compressed rubber components. It was demonstrated in reference (4) that for bonded rubber material of a cylindrical shape, a simplified theory equation between linear dynamic and nonlinear static behavior of rubber material was useful to predict their combined effects. This paper presents the second part of the study. It is confirmed that for the compressed rubber material, the stress can be factored into a function of frequency and a function of strain(stretch). The finite element methodis applied to analyze non-linear large deformation of rubber material and its results are compared with those of a simplified theory equation. The predicted dynamic material properties based on non-linear static finite element analyses have a good agreement of experimental results and those based on simplified theory equation.

  • Polypyrrole-Gold (PPy/Au) segment nanowires are prepared using anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates and assembled into a curved superstructure. Since the shape of the obtained superstructures can be designed to be capsule-like with inner space for containing materials, and their openings and closures can be controlled with external stimuli, these structures can be useful for a large variety of applications. Inner space of capsule-like superstructures is an important factor for their applications, and the volume of the inner space can be assessed using the generalized equation suggested by J. K. Lim (Bull. Korean Chem. Soc. 33, 2699 (2012)). In this paper, we introduce a new approach to obtain correct and simplified equation without redundant assumption which was used to induce the previous equations, and recalculate the volume of the inner space in the capsule-like superstructure using a new equation.
