  • Low-speed gas flows in micro-channels are investigated using a kinetic theory analysis. The Boltzmann equation simplified by a collision model is solved by means of a finite difference approximation with the discrete ordinate method. Calculations are made for flows in simple micro-channels and a micro-fluidic system consisting of two micro-channels in series. The results are compared well with those from the DSMC method and an analytical solutions to the Wavier-Stokes equations. It is shown that the present method is a useful tool for the modeling of low-speed flows in micro-channels.

  • The compressive behavior up to failure of short concrete members reinforced with fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is investigated. Rectangular cross-sections are analysed by means of a simplified elastic model, able also to explain stress-concentration. The model allows one to evaluate the equivalent uniform confining pressure in ultimate conditions referred to the effective confined cross-section and to the effective stresses in FRP along the sides of section; consequently, it makes it possible to determine ultimate strain and the related bearing capacity of the confined member corresponding to FRP failure. The effect of local reinforcements constitute by single strips applied at corners before the continuous wrapping and the effect of round corners are also considered. Analytical results are compared to experimental values available in the literature.

  • The present work reports on a numerical simulation of a compartment fire. The fire was modeled using a simplified approach, where combustion is simulated as a volumetric heat release. Computations were performed with the commercial code CFX 5.6. Radiation was modeled with a differential approximation (P1 model), while turbulence effects upon the mean gas flow were dealt with a SST turbulence model. Simulations were carried out using a transient approach, starting at the onset of ignition. Results are provided for the temperature field time evolution, thus allowing a direct comparison with the analytical and experimental data. The high spatial resolution available for the results proved to be of great utility for a more detailed analysis of the thermal impact on the steel structure.

  • The first diagonal cracking and ultimate shear load of reinforced girder made of ultra high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) were investigated in this paper. Eleven girders were tested in which eight girders failed in shear. A simplified formulation for the first diagonal cracking load was proposed. An analytical model to predict the ultimate shear load was formulated based on the two bounds theory. A fiber reinforcing parameter was constituted based on the random assumption of steel fiber uniform distribution. The predicted values were compared with the conventional predictions and the test results. The proposed equation can be used for the first cracking status analysis, while the proposed equations for computing the ultimate shear strength can be used for the ultimate failure status analysis, which can also be utilized for numerical limit analysis of reinforced UHPFRC girder. The established fiber reinforcing theoretical model can also be a reference for micro-mechanics analysis of UHPFRC.

  • Beam string structures(BSS) are one kind of efficient structure system because the bending moment in the beams is reduced greatly through the struts and the strings. As the struts in BSS are used as middle supports to the beam and always in compression, the buckling of the struts should be avoided. This paper investigates the lateral buckling of the struts in BSS. Firstly, the strut of a one-strut BSS is simplified into an analytical model by considering load is formulated and some special cases of the model are analyzed. Finally, the lateral buckling load of the strut is numerically examined by means of parameter studies. It is known that, because on end of the struts is jointed to the beam while the other end is connected to the strings, the buckling of the struts not only depends on the length of the struts and the stiffness of the joints, but also depends on the rise and the lateral stiffness of the beam, the layout of the strings and the number of the struts.

  • We present for one-dimensional model for elastoplastic bar with combined hardening in FPZ - fracture process zone and softening with embedded strong discontinuities. The simplified version of the model without FPZ is directly compared and validated against analytical solution of Bazant and Belytschko (1985). It is shown that deformation localizes in an area which is governed by the chosen element size and therefore causes mesh sensitivity and that the length of the strain-softening region tends to localize into a point, which also agrees with results obtained by stability analysis for static case. Strain increases in the softening domain with a simultaneous decrease of stress. The problem unloads elastically outside the strain-softening region. The more general case with FPZ leads to more interesting results that also account for induced strain heterogeneities.

  • In the present study an elastic-plastic strain analysis is carried out for fibrous composites by using numerical modeling. Application of homogeneous transversely-isotropic model was chosen based on problem solution of a square plate with a circular hole under uniaxial tension. The results obtained in this study correspond to the solution of fiber model trial problem, as well as to analytical solution. Further, numerical algorithm and software has been developed, based on simplified theory of small elastic strains for transversely-isotropic bodies, and FEM. The influence of holes and cracks on stress state of complicated configuration transversely-isotropic bodies has been studied. Strain curves and plasticity zones that are formed in vicinity of the concentrators has been provided. Numerical values of effective mechanical parameters calculated for unidirectional composites at different ratios of fiber volume content and matrix. Content volume proportions of fibers and matrix defined for fibrous composite material that enables to behave as elastic-plastic body or as a brittle material. The influences of the fibrous structure on stress concentration in vicinity of holes on boron/aluminum D16, used as an example.

  • Deep excavation may have impact on the adjacent tunnels. It is obvious that the excavation will adversely affect and even damage the existing tunnels if the induced deformation exceeds the capacity of tunnel structures. It hence creates a high necessity to predict tunnel displacement induced by nearby excavation to ensure the safety of tunnel. In this paper, a simplified method to evaluate the heave of the underlying tunnel induced by adjacent excavation is presented and verified by field measurement results. In the proposed model, the tunnel is represented by a series of short beams connected by tensile springs, compressional springs and shear springs, so that the rotational effect and shearing effect of the joints between lining rings can be captured. The proposed method is compared with the previous modelling methods (e.g., Euler-Bernoulli beam, a series of short beams connected only by shear springs) based on a field measured longitudinal deformation of subway tunnels. Results of these case studies show a reasonable agreement between the predictions and observations.

  • Fluid-elastic instability is believed to be a cause of the large-amplitude vibration and resulting rapid wear of heat exchanger tubes when the flow velocity exceeds a critical value. For sub-critical flow velocities, the random turbulence excitation is the main mechanism to be considered in predicting the long-term wear of steam generator tubes. Since flow-induced interactions of the tubes with tube supports in the sub-critical flow velocity can cause a localized tube wear, tube movement in the clearance between the tube and tube support as well as the normal contact force on the tubes by fluid should be maintained as low as possible. A simplified method is used for predicting fretting-wear damage of the double $90^{\circ}$U-bend tubes. The approach employed is based on the straight single-span tube analytical model proposed by Connors, the linear structural dynamic theory of Appendix N-1300 to ASME Section III and the Archard's equation for adhesive wear. Results from the presented method show a similar trend compared with the field data. This method can be utilized to predict the fretting-wear of the double $90^{\circ}$U-bend tubes in steam generators.

  • In precision laser microfabrication, focusing is essential to acquire good machining precision and uniform machining quality. If it does not perform, laser machining cannot be realized. So, confocal scanning method with high depth resolution is used for focus detection technique. This paper is concerned with a procedure for design, analysis and performance test of an autofocus fine actuating stage, which is composed of flexure-hinge type lever mechanism and piezoelectric actuator. Through series of analytical design, the stage is simplified as a rigid bodies(lever and main body) and springs(flexure hinges). The simplified model was applied to determine the dimension of flexure hinges and lever. After structural analysis confirmed design requirement, an actual stage was made and verified through an experiment on the static and dynamic characteristics(maximum stroke and 1st natural frequency). The fabricated stage was satisfied with the design requirement.
