Microstructural characteristics of two high strength (600 MPa & 800 MPa) weld metals produced by flux-cored arc welding process (FCAW) were evaluated. The 600 MPa grade weld metal was consisted of 75% acicular ferrite and 25% ferrite which was formed at relatively high temperature (grain boundary ferrite, widmanstatten ferrite, polygonal ferrite). However, the 800 MPa grade weld metal was composed of about 85% acicular ferrite and 15% low temperature forming phases (bainite, martensite). The prior austenite grain size of 800 MPa grade weld metal was decreased by solute drag force. The compositions and sizes of inclusions which are the dominant factors for the formation of acicular ferrite were analyzed by a transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In both 600 MPa and 800MPa grade weld metals, the inclusions were mainly consisted of Ti-oxide and Mn-oxide, and the average size of inclusions was $0.7{\mu}m$. The 800 MPa grade weld metal exhibited higher tensile strength and similar toughness compared with the 600 MPa grade weld metal. This result is mainly due to a higher fraction of low temperature products and a lower fraction of grain boundary ferrite in the 800 MPa grade weld metal.

In this work, the effect of strength mismatch on plastic limit loads is quantified for similar metal weld plates with cracks under tension load, via three-dimensional, small strain elastic-perfectly plastic finite element analyses. Relevant variables related to plate geometry and crack length are systematically varied, in addition to the weld width. An important finding is that mis-match limit loads can be uniquely quantified through strength mis-match ratio and one geometry-related parameter. Based on the proposed limit load solutions, reference stress based J-integral estimates is also investigated. When the reference stress is defined by the mis-match limit load, predicted J-integral values agree overall well with FE results.
The influence of welding heat input variation(600-900J/cm) and heat-treatment condition after welding on tensile strength of butt welded joint in $175Kg/mm^2$ strength level Maraging steel(Co-free and Co-containing) sheets was investigated on the basis of hardness distribution, microstructure of weld metal and fracture surface. The obtained main results are as follows; 1. The strength of weldment (UTS, NTS), joint efficiency showed a little decreasing tendency with the increase in welding heat input, and the elongation showed a little increasing tendency with the increase in the width of weld metal. It was considered because of the plastic constraint of the high strength base metal. 2. The strength of weldment was better in the solution treatment and aging than the aging only after welding due to the disappearance of almost denverite in weld metal. 3. The hardness distribution in weldment after welding and heat-treatment was almost similar to both Co containing and Co free Maraging steel with change in welding heat input. 4. The fracture was occurred at weld metal, and the fracture surface showed a relatively shallow dimples in both Co containing and Co free Maraging steel.
In-process quality control and high reliability of the weld are the major concerns in applying friction welding to the economical and qualified mass-production. Experimental examinations and quantitative analysis were performed for the optimiaztion of similar friction welding of hydraulic valve spool steels(SNCM220, SCM435, SACM645, SCM415, ${\varphi}24). The quantitative correlations were found between the initial cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) occurring during plastic deformation periods of the welding and the fatigue life as well as weld strength and welding conditions. A real-time evaluation system was developed for the friction weld quality by AE.
JLF-1 steel (Fe-9Cr-2W-V-Ta), reduced activation ferritic steel, is one of the promising candidate materials for fusion reactor applications. Tensile properties of JLF-1 base metal and its TIG weldments has been investigated at the room temperature, $400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength of base metal (JLF-1) showed the level between those of weld metal and the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ). When the test temperature was increased from room temperature to high temperature ($400^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$), both strength and ductility decreased or base metal, weld metal and the HAZ. The longitudinal specimens of base metal represented similar strength and ductility at room temperature and high temperature, compared to those of transverse specimens. Little anisotropy for the rolling direction was observed in the base metal of JLF-1 steel.

This study investigated the creep and creep crack growth (CCG) behavior of the base metal (BM), weld metal (WM), and heat affected zone (HAZ) in a Gr. 91 weldment, which was made by a shield metal arc weld process. A series of tensile, creep, and CCG tests were performed for the BM, WM, and HAZ at 550 ℃. Creep behavior of the BM, WM, and HAZ was analyzed in terms of various creep laws; Norton's power-law, Monkman-Grant relation and damage tolerance factor (λ), and their constants were determined. In addition, each CCGR law for the BM, WM, and HAZ was proposed and compared in terms of a C*-fracture parameter. The WM and HAZ revealed faster creep rate, lower rupture ductility, and faster CCGRs than the BM, but they showed a similar behavior in the creep and CCG. The CCGRs obtained in the present study exhibited a marginal difference when compared with those of RCC-MRx of currently elevated design code in France. A creep crack path in the HAZ plane progressed towards a weak fine-grained HAZ adjacent to the BM.
P122 steel, with a composition of Fe-10.57%Cr-1.79%W-0.96Cu-0.59Mn was arc-welded and oxidized between $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ in air for up to 6 months. The oxidation rates increased in the order of the base metal, weld metal, and heat-affected zone (HAZ), depending on the microstructure. The scale morphologies of the base metal, weld metal, and HAZ were similar because it was determined mainly by the alloy chemistry. The scale consisted primarily of a thin $Fe_2O_3$ layer at $600^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$ and an outer $Fe_2O_3$ layer and an inner ($Fe_2O_3$, $FeCr_2O_4$)-mixed layer at $800^{\circ}C$. The microstructural changes resulting from heating between $600^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ coarsened the carbide precipitates, secondary Laves phases, and subgrain boundaries in the matrix, resulting in softening of the base metal, weld metal, and HAZ.
This paper was studied on microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion characteristics of 316L stainless steel pipe welds was fabricated by orbital welding process. S-Ar specimen was fabricated by using Ar purge gas and S-$N_2$ specimen was fabricated by using $N_2$ purge gas. Ferrite was not detected in weld metal of S-$N_2$ specimen but the order of 0.13 Ferrite number(FN) was detected in weld metal of S-Ar specimen. Oxygen and Nitrogen concentration of S-$N_2$ specimen was higher than S-Ar specimen on HAZ and inner bead. The welds microstructural characteristics of S-Ar and S-$N_2$ specimens are similar. The microvickers hardness values of S-Ar and S-$N_2$ specimens welds were similar and average values of each regions were in the range of 174~194. The microstructures of S-Ar and S-$N_2$ weld metal were full austenite by primary austenite solidification. The Solidification structures of S-Ar and S-$N_2$ weld metal were formed directional dendrite toward bead center. The potentiodynamic polarization curve of STS 316L pipe welds exhibited typical active, passive, transpassive behaviour. Corrosion current density$(I_{corr.})$ and corrosion rate values of S-Ar specimen in 0.1M HCl solution were $0.95{\mu}A/cm^2$ and $0.31{\mu}A$/year respectively. The values of S-$N_2$ specimen were $1.4{\mu}A/cm^2$ and $0.45{\mu}m$/year.
Electron beam (EB) and Gas tungsten arc (TIG) welds were performed on 12.7 mm thick Ti-6Al-4V plate (ASTM Titanium Grade 5). Charpy-V toughness and hardness, as well as, microstructure of the welds and penetration from the macrostructure were studied. It appears that by EB welding rather smaller $\beta$-grains than with TIG welding can be obtained. Next to the fusion line the $\beta$-grain size in the HAZ was 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$l while in the weld metal it was 150 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Charpy-V toughness of the EB weld metal was equal or even better to that of base metal, which shows that the $\alpha$-martensite per se is not particularly brittle if only the grain size is fine enough. This is similar to behavior of low carbon martensite in steel. The grain size was studied with light optical and scanning electron (SEM) microscopes. Thus for products, for products which can be manufactured automatically with very narrow fit, the EB welding of Ti-6Al-4V appears to yield satisfactory toughness without any complex post weld heat treatment. ill this study as in earlier studies the TIG welds gave lower toughness than that of the base material due to the higher heat input and slower cooling as compared to EB welding.
The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of residual stresses on the $\Delta$K$\sub$th/ and fatigue crack growth behavior of butt weldments. For this purpose, transverse butt sutmerged arc welding was performed on SM50A steel plate and CT(compact tension) specimens which loading direction is perpendicular to weld bead were selected. Welding residual stresses distribution on the specimen was determined by hole drilling method. The case of crack located parallel to weld bead, the states of as weld and PWHT, $\Delta$K$\sub$th/ of specimens(HAZ, weld zone) was higher than that of the base metal probably because of the compressive residual stresses of crack tip. In low $\Delta$K region, it is estimated that the effects of residual stresses for da/dN are great. In region II, the da/dN of weldments in as weld state was lower than that of the base metal. Though da/dN of Weldments in PWHT state was similar to that of the base metal. The constant of power law, m in two states consisted with the base metal. Therefore , it is estimated that the value of m is not affected by residual stresses. Fatigue crack growth behavior of weldments consisted with the base metal considering the effective stress intensity factor range($\Delta$K$\sub$eff/) included the effect of initial residual stress(Kres). Thus, we can predict the fatigue crack growth behavior of weldment by knowing the distribution of initial residual stress at the crack tip.
