  • This paper has analyzed Seoul metropolitan area on the basis of cluster characteristics and it is to understand the traits of each clusters. In order to modelize the area, 10 different indicators were selected among components of a city such as population, activities, land and facilities. Also through principal component analysis, similar characteristics or congenialities of the variables were derived as a common factor. The result was organized by factor score from hierarchical clustering method and as a final result, metropolitan area was clustered into five areas.

  • We have carried out JK near-infrared photometry for the central region of the metal rich globular cluster M71, whose (K, J - K) color-magnitude diagram is presented here. Using two independent methods we derive the distance modulus to M71, 12.89 and 12.86 $pm0.12$ respectively. The former is derived using the HB luminosity $M_{Ko}$(HB) = -1.15 for globular clusters having metallicity between -1.0 to -0.3 (Kuchinski et al. 1995). The latter is derived through a comparison with IR photometry of stars in the similar metallicity cluster 47 Tuc. We also estimate the reddening to M71, E(J - K) = 0.13, based on E(B - V) = 0.04 of 47 Tuc.

  • Today, the outreach of National Meteorological Service such as PC cluster based Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) technique is vigorous in the world wide. In this regard, WMO (World Meteorological Organization) asked KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) to formulate a regional project, which cover most of RA II members, using similar technical system with KMA's. In that sense, Meteorological Research Institute (METRI) in KMA developed Mongolian NWP System (MNWPS) based on PC cluster and transferred the technology to Weather Service Center in Mongolia. The hybrid parallel algorithm and channel bonding technique were adopted to cut cost and showed 41% faster performance than single MPI (Message Passing Interface) approach. The cluster technique of Beowulf type was also adopted for convenient management and saving resources. The Linux based free operating system provide very cost effective solution for operating multi-nodes. Additionally, the GNU software provide many tools, utilities and applications for construction and management of a cluster. A flash flood event happened in Mongolia (2 September 2003) was selected for test run, and MNWPS successfully simulated the event with initial and boundary condition from Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System (GDAPS) of KMA. Now, the cluster based NWP System in Mongolia has been operated for local prediction around the region and provided various auxiliary charts.

  • This research aims to find planning issues on reuse of an industrial heritage as a cultural cluster and to suggest planning factors which can be referred when designing the similar cases. Analysis standards were formed through reviewing of precedent literatures, and the selected cases(i.e Shanghai M50, Yokohama BankART1929, and Incheon ArtPlatform) were analyzed to identify both physical and nonphysical planning characteristics. By combining analyses, the following results were obtained; (1) The demand and supply of the arts coexist in one place, and the studios and galleries are designed with high ceilings; (2) The regional and historical characteristics are revealed from preserving major architectural elements of previous buildings, and open spaces are provided to promote a variety of activities for local residents; (3) Various strategies to overcome disadvantage in location are developed, and the concepts of design can be easily recognized by buildings' exterior as the reused industrial heritage and the cultural cluster; (4) Diverse supports for artists make it possible to gather many competent artists, and the cooperative networks among artists play a pivotal role in the development of cultural cluster; (5) The cluster runs educational programs reflecting the needs of local residents, and builds a strong relationship with the local community by supporting regional art industry or developing linked programs; (6) The cluster serves various functions such as cafes, pubs, restaurants, art shops, and bookstores, and hosts appealing events and festivals to attract many people even who are not interested in arts.

  • We use dense redshift surveys of nine galaxy clusters at z ~ 0.2 to compare the galaxy distribution in each system with the projected matter distribution from weak lensing. By combining 2087 new MMT/Hectospec redshifts and the data in the literature, we construct spectroscopic samples within the region of weak-lensing maps of high (70-89%) and uniform completeness. With these dense redshift surveys, we construct galaxy number density maps using several galaxy subsamples. The shape of the main cluster concentration in the weak-lensing maps is similar to the global morphology of the number density maps based on cluster members alone, mainly dominated by red members. We cross correlate the galaxy number density maps with the weak-lensing maps. The cross correlation signal when we include foreground and background galaxies at 0.5zcl < z < 2 zcl is 10 - 23% larger than for cluster members alone at the cluster virial radius. The excess can be as high as 30% depending on the cluster. Cross correlating the galaxy number density and weak-lensing maps suggests that superimposed structures close to the cluster in redshift space contribute more significantly to the excess cross correlation signal than unrelated large-scale structure along the line of sight. Interestingly, the weak-lensing mass profiles are not well constrained for the clusters with the largest cross correlation signal excesses (>20% for A383, A689 and A750). The fractional excess in the cross correlation signal including foreground and background structures could be a useful proxy for assessing the reliability of weak-lensing cluster mass estimates.

  • Interactions between the galactic interstellar medium (ISM) and the intra cluster medium (ICM) are believed to be one of the main processes affecting galaxy evolution in cluster environments. The aim of our research is to study the molecular gas properties of a galaxy under the ICM pressure in the cluster environment. It has been well known that cluster galaxies are deficient in atomic hydrogen gas (HI gas) compared to their field counterparts and now there is much evidence that low density ISM is being removed by ram pressure due to ICM wind. Meanwhile, no significant molecular gas deficiency of the cluster galaxy population has been found yet they show overall lower star formation rate than galaxies in the field, and it is still puzzling how the star formation could decrease without stripping of dense molecular gas. To address this issue, we probe the detailed molecular gas properties of NGC 4402, located near the cluster center, as part of a study of four spiral galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. NGC 4402 is well known undergoing ram pressure stripping with a truncated HI disk($D_{HI}/D_{opt}$ - 0.75 and only 36% of HI gas compare to field galaxies of a similar size) and a disturbed gas morphology. Comparing the high resolution 12CO and 13CO data of NGC 4402 from the Sub Millimeter Array (SMA) with existing other wavelength data, we probe the spatial distribution and a physical condition of molecular gas under strong ICM pressure. We discuss the star formation activity might have been altered and hence how the global color of NGC4402 would change in the future.

  • Cluster based wireless sensor networks have a characteristic that the cluster heads collect and aggregate data from sensor nodes and send data to sink node. In addition, between the adjacent sensor nodes deployed in the same area is characterized to the similar sensing data. In this paper, we propose a transmission algorithm for improving the energy efficiency using these two features in the cluster-based wireless sensor networks. Adjacent neighboring nodes form a pair and the two nodes sense data on shifts for one round. Additionally, two cluster heads are selected in a cluster and one of them alternately collects data from nodes and transmits data to the sink. This paper describes a transmission rounding method and a transmission frame for increasing energy efficiency and compared with conventional methods. We perform computer simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, and show better performance in terms of energy efficiency as compared with the LEACH algorithm.

  • We present the results of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) HI imaging study of seven late-type galaxies. They are located in the outskirts of the Virgo cluster, possibly along a filament connected to Virgo from the north-west. Most galaxies in this region are found to be HI-rich, containing more HI gas compared to field galaxies with similar size and optical luminosity. The positions of the sample with respect to the cluster and their high HI mass-to-light ratios suggest that the selected galaxies might be accreting more gas from their surroundings while falling into the cluster. By high-resolution HI imaging, we aim to find evidence that galaxies are pre-processed by gas accretion from the intergalactic medium and/or gas-rich neighbors. We probe the detailed HI morphology/kinematics and the star formation properties of the sample. All of these galaxies are found with a large HI disk which is quite extended compared to their stellar disk. Together with kinematical peculiarities, this strongly suggests that cold gas accretion is responsible for active star formation in these galaxies.

  • Pseudomonas putida KCTC 1639 was newly identified as a potential producer of biodegradable medium chain length polyhydroxyalkanoates. It exhibited a carbon assimilation pattern quite different from other known P. putida strains, but a more similar pattern with P. oleovorans, which assimilates the carbon sources mainly through ${\beta}$-oxidation rather than the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway. The PHA synthesis gene cluster from P. putida KCTC1639 was composed of two gene loci; the PHA synthase gene locus and granule-associated gene locus, which were cloned and deposited in the GenBank under accession numbers AY286491 and AY750858 as a new nucleotide sequence, respectively. The molecular structure and amino acid homology of the new gene cluster were compared with those from Pseudomonas species, including other P. putida strains and P. oleovorans, and a higher than $90\%$ homology was observed.
