Slug/bail tests were conducted in sand layer (sbt-1 well), silty sand layer (sbt-2 well), and mixed sand and silty sand layer (sbt-3 well). Hydraulic conductivity and specific storage coefficient were estimated through slug/bail tests. Pore volumes of groundwater level drawdown zone for bail test were estimated by using hydraulic conductivity and specific storage coefficient. KGS model was most suitable interpretation method of slug/bail tests. Average hydraulic conductivity for slug/bail tests were estimated to be $6.65{\times}10^{-5}$ m/sec in sbt-1 well, $6.33{\times}10^{-6}$ m/sec in sbt-2 well, and $3.72{\times}10^{-5}$ m/sec in sbt-3 well. Average specific storage coefficient for slug/bail tests were estimated to be 0.0225 in sbt-1 well, 0.0177 in sbt-2 well, and 0.0259 in sbt-3 well. Dimensionless time and dimensionless wellbore storage were estimated by use of transmissivity, storativity, test time, and specification of test wells. And, dimensionless drawdown were selected by parameter ${\alpha}\;and\;{\beta}$ parameter from Cooper et al. (1967). Radius of influence were estimated by estimated dimensionless time, dimensionless wellbore storage, and dimensionless drawdown. The average radius of influnce for slug/bail tests were estimated to be 1.377 m in sbt-1 well, 1.253 m in sbt-2 well, and 1.558 m in sbt-3 well. Pore volume at groundwater level drawdown zone by dummy withdrawal for bail tests were estimated to be $145,636cm^3$ in sbt-1 well, $71,561cm^3$ in sbt-2 well, and $100,418cm^3$ in sbt-3 well. Pore volume excepted well volume at groundwater level drawdown zone by dummy withdrawal for bail tests were estimated to be $145,410cm^3$ in sbt-1 well, $71,353cm^3$ in sbt-2 well, and $100,192cm^3$ in sbt-3 well.

This paper deals with the correlations between the results of the physical property tests and the mechanical property tests for estimating the mechanical indexes by the physical property test results. The soil samples were taken at changweon area, Gyeon-gsangnam-do, where the structures would be placed on the alluvial clay foundation. The outcomes of the study are as follows: 1. Judging from casagrande's plasticity chart, it is considered that the almost all soil samples belong to inorganic silty clay with medium plasticity (clay 14∼62%, silt 36∼73%, sand 1∼29%). The specific gravities are between 2.61 and 2.72, the wet unit weights 1.53g/㎤ and 1.93g/㎤, the liquid limits 28% and 51%, the plastic limits 15% and 31%, the plastic indexes 7% and 27%, the natural moisture contents 33% and 64%. 2. The unconfined compression strengths are between 0.07kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 0.77kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the cohesions 0.04kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 0.37kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the internal friction angles 0$^{\circ}$ and 9$^{\circ}$. 3. The consolidation tests show that the initial void ratios are between 0.68 and 1.68, the precompression loads 0.27kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 1.15kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the compression indexes 0.12 and 0.59. 4. The correlations between the results of the physical property tests and the mechanical property tests for the soil samples are presented as follows: rt=0.011 (203-wn), Cc=0.025 (LL-27.2), Cc=0.46 (e0-0.58), Cc=0.013 (wn-23.2), C=0.021+qu/2.08, qu=2.268rt-3.635
Organic farming system in rice paddy is rapidly expanding in Korea. This study was to find out optimum japonica rice cultivars for organic farming. A field research was conducted to evaluate the characteristics of japonica rice cultivars under no-tillage paddy at Doo-ryangmyeon, Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. The experimental soil was Juggog series (silty clay loam: 56.0% silt, 31.2% clay and 12.8% sand). In experiment, ten lines of Japanese rice cultivars were tested under no-tillage amended with rye (NTR) and no-tillage without cover crop treatment (NTNT). In addition, two Korean japonica rice cultivars as check cultivars were used in this study. The grain yield in NTR was significantly higher in 6.13 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Kinuhikari, 5.30 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Komekogane, 5.25 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Kosihikari, 5.22 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Mazizbare and 5.12 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Akitakomachi compared to two Korean rice cultivars (4.57 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Hwayoungbyeo and 4.00 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Ilmibyeo) in that order. While, grain yield in NTNT was significantly higher in 4.90 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Akitakomachi 3.81 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Hinohikari, 3.74 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Umezkusi, 3.67 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Kosihikari and 3.54 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Dondokuri compared to 3.02 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Ilmibyeo and 2.36 Mg $ha^{-1}$ for Hwayoungbyeo, respectively. The number of panicle per $m^2$ and grain number per panicle were indispensible for increasing the yield of rice. These results were able to find out optimum japonica rice cultivar Akitakomachi for organic farming in no-tillage paddy.
The IIA(Inchon International Airport) which will function as the HUB airport in the northeast Asian region in the upcoming 21th century will be located in the reclaimed land with sand dredged in the vicinity of project area between Youngjong and Yongyu islands. The original ground is composed of soft clayey silt (ML) or silty clay (CL). The reclaimed land is classified as being SP-SM and having poor gradation of Cu<3 which resulted in the anticipation for difficulty in compaction (compaction index = 0.6~0.7). This anticipation shedded light on the necessity of performing test compactions for the thickness of 3~5meters of reclaimed land, aiming at the discovery of effective and economical compaction method. Upon the call for the test compaction performance 4 different compaction methods have been selected for trial from the research done on the international and local academic papers, past experience with compaction works, and their written materials. For the precise interparetation of test results, the ground survey and measurements have been performed. The Hydraulic Hammer Compaction has been chosen as the most optimum in accordance withe the test results.

This study was made to find several significant relations among various physical and mechanical properties including cone penetration resistance. The alluvial clay samples were taken at the Daebul Reclaimed Tideland in Samhomyeon, Yeongamgun, Jeonranamdo. The results of the study are summarized as follows; 1.Most samples belong to medium or high plastic, inorganic, silty clay(clay contents;32-64%, silt contents; 36-68%, sand contents; 0-3%). The specific gravities range from 2.70 to 2.73, the unit weights from 1.45 to 1. 75g/cm$^3$, the natural moisture contents from 45 to 77%, the liquid limits from 32 to 56%. It is certain that the foundation is weak because the natural moisture contents are much higher than the liquid limits. 2.It is known from the shear tests that the unconfined compression strenghs vary from 0.09 to 0. 38kg/cm2, the cohesions from 0.05 to 0. 21kg/cm2, the internal friction angles from 0 to 3˚. 3.The consolidation tests show that the initial void ratios range from 1.25 to 2.28, the compression indeices from 0.43 to 0.84, the preconsolidation loads from 0.21 to 0.74kg/cm$^2$. 4.Cone penetration resistances are usually less than 5kg/cm$^2$ from ground surface to the depth of about 8m, and from S to l0kg/cm$^2$ in the layer below about 8m to hard layer. 5.The cohesion and cone penetration resistance are in proportion to the depth of soil layer. 6.The correlations between various physical and mechanical properties including cone penetration resistance for the alluvial clay samples are as follows; a) Wn=0.944C+ l2.733 (r=0.829) b) LL=0. 728Cy+6. 991 (r=0. 873) c) PI=0.659Cy-8.168 (r=0.860) d) rt=0. 0077(272-Wn) =2.092-0. 0077Wn (r=0. 859) e) 60=0. 035wn-0 447 (r=0. 893) f) C=0.380qw+0.031 (r=0.816) g) qu=0.0707qc+0.029 (r=0.810) h) C=0.018Z+0.055 (r=O.802) I) qc=0. 415Z+1, 438 (r=0. 943)
This study was carried out to discuss how soils in the area planned for a forest road construction can be mechanically tested and practically applied. For this, 16 soil test samples from 8 plots(2 samples per plot) were used. The major tests are focused on unit weight before and after cut, water content, liquid and plastic limits, sieve and hydrometer analysis etc. The total unit weight(${\rho}_t$) before and after cut are $1.69g/cm^3$ and $1.19g/cm^3$, respectively. Their water contents are 21.0% and 20.5%. The coefficient of uniformity U and coefficient of curvature C obtained from sieve and hydrometer analysis are 125 and 0.42, which mean generally not well graded. On the soil classification by USCS, SM(silty sand or silt-sand mixed soil)is a Key soil, but it seems to be not good for fill material. From the standard proctor test are resulted $1.40{\pm}0.065g/cm^3$ for the unit weight(${\rho}$) in the nature and $1.88{\pm}0.049g/cm^3$ for the optimum proctor unit weight(${\rho}pr$) each. With this to say, it is necessary more powerful compaction work at earth filling, with which this soil reachs enough the ${\rho}pr$, and more earth.
Kyeonggi Bay, a macrotidal coastal embayment in the Yellow Sea coast of central korea, is fringed by vastly developed tidal flats. About 400 surface sediment samples were collected from the intertidal and subtidal zones of Kyeonggi Bay for a study of the sediment distribution pattern and the surface sediment characteristics of this environment. The kyeonggi Bay surface sediment becomes progressively finer in the shoreward direction, from offshore sand to shoreward silty sand and sandy silt. This shoreward-fining trend is repeated again on the tidal flat and, as a consequence, a grain-size break occurs near the low-water line which separates the intertidal area from the subtidal one. The intertidal and subtidal sediments differ from each other in textural characteristics such as mean grain size and skewness and this can be interpreted to result from differences in hydraulic energy and morphology between the two environments. The mineral and chemical compositions of the Kyeonggi Bay sediments are largely controlled by the sediment grain size. Smectite was nearly absent in the clay mineral assemblage of Kyeonggi Bay sediment. The contents of Co, Cu and Ni were high in the Banweol tidal flat, which suggests a continuous process of accumulation of these metals. the intertidal environment appears to respond rapidly to artificial coastal modifications, the effects of which should be taken into consideration when planning a dam construction or coastal reclamation.
This study was measured environmental factors of flat oyster habitats and biomass of flat oyster to improve the productivity of flat oyster. Water temperature and salinity of the flat oyster habitat ranged from 5.5 to 27.4$^{\circ}C$ and from 31.2 to 33.4 , respectively. Average concentrations of DO, COD, DIN and PO$\_$4/$\^$3/ -P were 7.11 mg/l, 4.55 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at./l and 0.36 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at./l respectively. Surface sediments at the sampling area were composed of coarse sand, sandy silt and silty sand. Average level of IL, COD and AVS in the surface sediments were 2.6%, 13.70 mg/g dry and 0.33 mg/g dry respectively. In each sampling station, total standing crops of phytoplankton showed peaks twice in February and August. Dominant species of phytoplankton occurred in Haechang Bay throughout the year were Skeletonema costatum, Paralia sulcata, Eucampia zodiacus, Chaetoceros curvicetus, C. affinis, C. debilis, C. decipiens, Asterionella glacialis, Pseudonitzschia longissima, Pseudonitzschia seriata, Ceratium furca and C. fusus. Ten species of the bivalves were collected at the flat oyster habitat. Most of bivalves were the eutrophic species Ostrea denselamellosa, Crassostrea gigas, Ruditapes philippinarum, Scaphraca subcrenata, Scapharca broughtonii, Atrina pectinata, Fulvia mutica, Mytilus edulis, Protothaca jedoensis and Megacardita ferruginosa. The mean density of them was 21 inds./㎡ (479.14 g/㎡), while that of the flat oyster was at 0.25 inds./㎡ (231.25 g/㎡).
The sedimentary environments and biostratigrapy of the tidal sediments off the Mankyung-Dongjin River estuary were studied based on sedimentary facies and diatom assemblage analysis. Sediment facies from the five vibracores are mainly clay, silt, and sand facies. The clay and silty sediment facies are more dominant than the sandy facies, and contain diatom frustules. The frequency of the diatom frustules are rate to common, but not found in sandy sediment facies. Bigeneric structures such as burrow and non-bigeneric primary sedimentary structures such as laminated sand and mud or silt and mud couplets, flaser bedding, ripple-cross lamination are found in several stratigraphic levels of the sedimentary sequences. A total of 219 species and varieties, belonging to 61 genera has been identified in the present study. Among them, paralia sulcata is the most abundant species about 30 to 50% of the total diatom frustules. Another predominant species are Cyclotella striata. Thalassionema nitzschioides. Actinoptychus undulatus. Delphineis surirella, Raphoneis amphiceros. Most of the diatoms occurred in this study area are marine, marine-brackish water, and brackish water species, and are benthic and tychopelagic or meroplanktonic species. Also, most of the species are coastal to littoral and littoral to inner neritic species. The occurrences of freshwater species, about 1 to 5% is higher than that of the Namyang Bay tidal sediments. The ecological properties of the diatoms occurred in the study area and primary sedimentary structure such as flaser bedding ripple cross bedding indicate that the deposits are formed under coastal or littoral to subeditorial environments such as tidal zone which was subjected to the influenced of stream water and was more strongly influenced by temperate to warm water than cold water. The sedimentary environments have not been changed distinctively during the time of deposition. The vertical distribution pattern of diatoms in the study area is studied by Q-mode cluster Analysis using spss/pc+ (ver.4.0). The results show that the three cores (GE-3, GE-11, GE-12) are divided into two diatom assemblages, respectively. Biostratigraphic correlation using the data of Q-mode Cluster Analysis are attempt in this study.
The objectives of this study were to characterize the physicochemical properties and mineralogy of Hwangto (yellow residual soils) from the southwestern part of Korea and to understand the soil-forming processes of the residual soils from their parent rocks. Both the yellowish residual soils as well as the unweathered and weathered parent rocks were obtained from Jangdong-ri, Donggang-myun, Naju, Jeollanam-do, Korea. The soil samples were examined to analyze the said soil's physicochemical properties such as color, pH, and particle size distribution. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were performed in order to understand the mineralogy, chemical composition, and morphology of the soils. Two thin sections of a parent rock were analyzed to study its mineral composition. A particle size analysis of the soils indicates that the residual soil consists of mainly silt and clay (approximately 95%) and that soil textures are silty clay or silt clay loam. The soil colors of the residual soil are dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) through yellowish red (5YR 4/6). The pH of the residual soil ranges from 4.3 to 5.1. The major minerals of the parent rocks were quartz, biotite, chlorite, and plagioclase. The mineralogy of the sand fraction of the residual soil was quartz, biotite, muscovite and sanidine. The mineralogy of the silt fraction of the residual soil was quartz, biotite, muscovite, Na-feldspar, K-feldspar, and sanidine. The clay mineralogy of the soil was goethite, kaolinite, ilite, hydroxy-interlayed vermiculite(HIV), vermiculite, mica, K-feldspar and quartz. The mineral composition of the residual soil and the parent rock indicates that feldspar and mica in the parent rock weathered into illite, vermiculite and hydroxy-interlayed vermiculite(HIV), and finally changed into kaolinite and halloysite in the yellowish residual soils.
