The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of the suspended matter caused by dredging at the northeastern part of Kwangyang Bay and to determine the effect of the single silt protector for it. According to the direction of the tidal current, six sampling stations were chosen from the dredging site to the southeast. At the high tide, the high concentration of the suspended matter was observed below the mid-depth near the dredging site. As the tidal currents were stronger. its concentrations below the mid-depth at the inner stations of the single silt protector were rapidly increased, but those of the outer stations did not show any significant change. The concentrations at the inner stations of the silt protector at that time were from 20~140mg/l and those of the outer stations, which was only about 30 m apart from the inner station, were from 20~30mg/l. It suggests that the large amount of suspended matter caused by dredging were moved to the inner stations near the silt protector at the ebb tide and that the silt protector is very effective for the suspended matter.
The purpose of this study was to identify the controlling factors to construct tidal flat ecosystems having similar characteristics as natural ones. We transplanted the soil in a constructed tidal flat to a natural one and vice versa. Parameters monitored after these transplantations were silt content, organic matter, bacterial population and oxidation-reduction potential. Moreover, the relationship among silt content, organic matter and bacterial population was investigated by laboratory column experiment. The silt content, organic matter, bacterial population and vertical profile of oxidation-reduction potential in the soil transplanted from the constructed tidal flat to the natural one changed to similar values to those in the natural one. On the contrary, all the parameters for the soil transplanted from the natural tidal flat to the constructed one changed to similar values as those in the constructed one. The silt contents in thses two transplanted solis were in proportion to the organic carbon contents and bacterial population. Similarly, the bacterial population in laboratory column experiment increased with the increase in silt and organic matter contents. It seemed to be important to select a place to enhance accumulative of silt and/or to maintain the silt content by hydrodynamic control of seawater in order to construct a tidal flat having similar characteristics as natural one.

Resuspended dust from paved roads in Seoul and Incheon metropolitan areas is regarded as one of the major $PM_{10}$ sources in these areas, according to the recent emission estimates using the emission factors compiled in AP-42. It is well known that the AP-42 model for estimating $PM_{10}$ emissions from paved roads requires information on silt loadings of particular paved roads. The conventional AP-42 method (vacuum swept method) for road silt sampling, however, is expensive, time consuming, and dangerous. These drawbacks led us to develop a Mobile Dust Monitoring System (MDMS) capable of doing real time measurements of silt loading of paved roads, thereby we could get higher resolution silt loading data both in terms of time and space without too much human efforts and danger. In this study, for the real-time measurement of silt loading of paved roads, the principle used in the TRAKER method of U.S. Desert Research Institute was employed and the entire sampling systems including data acquisition system were designed for theses purpose and mounted on a SUV. The correlation between the silt loading measured by vacuum swept method and the speed corrected ${\Delta}Dust$ was derived for the vehicle-based silt loading measurements, and then the variations of silt loading on paved roads were surveyed using the MDMS in test routes of Seoul and Incheon. From the results of real-time measurements, temporal and spatial variations of silt loading data together with the existence of hot spots were observed for paved roads in Seoul and Incheon. The result of this study will be employed to estimate fugitive dust emissions from paved roads.
The densified mixture design algorithm (DMDA) was employed to manufacture high-performance lightweight concrete (LWAC) using silt dredged from reservoirs in southern Taiwan. Dredged silt undergoing hydration and high-temperature sintering was made into a lightweight aggregate for concrete mixing. The workability and durability of the resulting concrete were examined. The LWAC made from dredged silt had high flowability, which implies good workability. Additionally, the LWAC also had good compressive strength and anti-corrosion properties, high surface electrical resistivity and ultrasonic pulse velocity as well as low chloride penetration, all of which are indicators of good durability.
The effects of water temperature, salinity, and silt and clay on the photosynthetic activity of Porphyra yezoensis were measured. The rate of photosynthesis of P. yezoensis increases as the water temperature rises in the range of $8{\sim}16^{\circ}C$ and begin to decrease at $18^{\circ}C$. In the salinity range of $21.5{\sim}33.5\%0$, the rate of photosythesis of P. yezoensis was increased in the sea water of $29.5\%0$ salinity and decreased in $21.5\%0$ salinity. The rates of photosynthesis of P. yezoensis were significantly decreased with increase of the concentration of silt and clay and the time of exposure to suspended silt and clay. Of the combined effects of salinity, and silt and clay on the photosynthetic activity of P. yezoensis, the effects of silt and clay were higher in the low salinity of $21.5\%0$ and $33.5\%0$. The wet weight of P. yezoensis showed a remarkable loss with increase of the concentration of silt and clay and the time of exposure to silt and clay.
It is well known all much information for evaluation on possibility of liquefaction and lateral flow for sand over the world. Recently, it is started to be known that liquefaction happens on non-plastic silt, too. But cyclic and post-cyclic characteristics for non-plastic silt is a few familiar to the world. Specially, it is not aware of the estimating method for lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The main purpose in this paper is to propose the evaluation for liquefaction and lateral flow on non-plastic silt. The method used in this research is that possibility for liquefaction on non-plastic silt was evaluated with cyclic direct simple shear test, and then residental strength was estimated with static shear test. Through the test results liquefaction on non-plastic silt is well not happened but strength decreases rapidly with increasing shear stress. With the proposed method it can be evaluated possibility of liquefaction and propose lateral flow.
The results from normally consolidated isotropic drained and undrained triaxial compression tests (NCIU and NCID) on sand with high silt content were presented in this paper. The experiments were performed on specimens of Nak-dong River sand with 63% silt content under effective confined pressures, 100 kPa to 400 kPa. From test results, Sandy silt became initially compressive but eventually appeared to provide dilatancy response throughout the entire stress-strain curve The behavior of sandy silt was more difficult to characterize than that of clay and sand due to lower plastic characteristic. Especially, the samples exhibited dilatancy development during shear after failure. The shear behavior and shear strength parameters of sandy silt can be determined as stress-strain behaviors are described by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The shear behaviors were observed increasing dilatancy volume change tendency with strain-softening tendency after failure. In this paper, the behavior of dilatancy depends on not only sand content but also fine content with low-cohesion during shear in the samples of sandy silt.
The vertical drain method generate the disturbed zone, because the drainage should be penetrated into the in-situ ground. The characteristics of the smear zone generated cause the problems that the coefficient of permeability decreases and the consolidation time anticipated in the design is not properly shortened. In this study, in order to understand such influence, the laboratory test were carried out so as to reasonably determine the coefficient of consolidation in silt. For that procedure, mandrel of a diversity were penetrated into the soil tube with silt, and then the variation of pore water pressure was measured with the pore pressure meter, Then, the range of smear effect on silt was estimated with monitoring data through the laboratory test, and also analyzed with inputting the coefficient of consolidation into the theoretical equation.

This paper presents results of an experimental study which investigates the effect of industrial pozzolan made from calcined silt of dam at $750^{\circ}C$ for 5 h, on mechanical properties and durability of ordinary mortar, compared to the silica fume. Mortar specimens prepared with 5, 10 and 15 % of calcined silt to substitute cement were evaluated for their compressive and flexural strength, sulfate, acid and penetration of chloride ions resistance. The results were compared with ordinary mortar (without addition) and mortar containing 10 % of silica fume. The results obtained showed that the calcined silt of dam has a high potential to be used as a pozzolanic material, it improves the strength and the durability of mortar and compete the silica fume.
