Pathogenic infection in tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury is common and there is a breed specific response regarding tolerance. Hence, the tolerance level of three eco-races of tasar silkworm viz. Daba, Sarihan and Raily to Antheraea mylitta cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (AmCPV) infection was tested. The survival of Daba, Sarihan and Raily eco-races was significantly different (p<0.05) when challenged with the same concentration ($1{\times}10^5$ polyhedra/ml) of AmCPV. Daba eco-race was more tolerant to the AmCPV infection having higher survival (65.7%) and $LC_{50}$ values (1000893.17 polyhedra/ml) of AmCPV followed by Sarihan eco-race (50.7% survival and $LC_{50}$ value of AmCPV 187203.6168 polyhedra/ml) and Raily eco-race (24.3% survival and $LC_{50}$ value of AmCPV 5176.37 polyhedra/ml). The tolerance level of Daba and Sarihan eco-races against AmCPV was more than two times than Raily eco-race.
Author studied to investigate the form and character of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. which bred from double copulation. The results obtained are as follows. 1. Some eggs of silkworm were fertilized evenly 10 minutes copulation, but it was varried by the race of the worm. In silkworm eggs production, the male and female should be separated from the early stage of 5th instar in order to do not make non hybrid eggs. 2. It was very difficult to find the tendency of fertilization ratio between homo race copulation and hetero race copulation in crossing with mates of two different race for a female (double crossing).

The present investigation reports a phenomenon hitherto unknown in tropical sericulture, wherein dia-pause nature of bivoltine eggs is overcome through a cross with a non-diapausing race of silkworm, Bombyx mori, L. Eggs of bivoltine silkworm Bombyx mori, L. generally do not hatch under tropical conditions. To prevent diapause, they are subjected to acid treatment or low temperature hibernation scheduled. A race developed at KSSRDI is found to prevent the diapause nature of bivoltine eggs when crossed as male parent, without any acid treatment or hibernation schedule. This phenomenon is reported for the first time, being unique, opens up interesting area of research in silkworm genetics of commercial implications in the industry.

To understand the physical method for induction of anti-bacterial substances from the silkworm larvae, Bombyx mori, three physical methods, i.e., infrared radiation, ultraviolet radiation and ultrasonic wave, have been used in this study. The results have shown that ultrasonic wave can induce anti-bacterial sub-stances effectively than radiations in the B. mori larva. The induction of anti-bacterial substances was different from silkworm race to race. Summer-autumn silkworm race (Qiufeng${\times}$Baiyu) was easy to induce antibacterial substances. It is suggested that the ultrasonic wave is a simple and easy method for induction.

The variation in the level of immune response related gene expression in silkworm, Bombyx mori following infection with Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) was analyzed at different time intervals. The occlusion bodies of BmNPV orally inoculated to the two most divergent silkworm races viz., Sarupat (resistant to BmNPV infection) and CSR2 (susceptible to BmNPV infection) were subjected to oral BmNPV inoculation. The expression profile of gp 41 gene of BmNPV in the Sarupat and CSR2 races revealed that the virus could invade the midguts of both susceptible and resistant races. However, its multiplication was significantly less in the midgut of resistant race, while, in the susceptible race, the viral multiplication reached maximum level within 12 h. These findings indicate that potential host genes are involved in the inhibition of viral multiplication within larval midgut. The immune response genes arylphorin, cathepsin B, gloverin, lebocin, serpin, Hsp 19.9, Hsp 20.1, Hsp 20.4, Hsp 20.8, Hsp 21.4, Hsp 23.7, Hsp 40, Hsp 70, Hsp90 revealed differential level of expression on NPV infection. The gloverin, serpin, Hsp 23.7 and Hsp 40 genes are significantly up-regulated in the resistant race after NPV infection. The early up-regulation of these genes suggests that these genes could play an important role in baculovirus resistance in the silkworm, B. mori.

Oral supplementation of minerals mixture of potassium bromide and nickel sulphate on $CSR_2,\;CSR_4\;and\;CSR_2{\times}CSR_4$ crossbreed races with different concentrations (70, 110 and $160\;{\mu}g/ml$) were fed to the fifth instar larvae. Two of the four normal feeds per day was substituted with treated leaves fed to silkworm at fifth instar larvae. The controls were fed with the leaves sprayed with distilled water and normal leaves. The $CSR_4$ race treated larvae showed a significant increase in silkgland weight, cocooning percentage, female cocoon weight, male cocoon weight, male cocoon shell weight, male cocoon shell ratio, filament length, filament weight, denier, fecundity, number of eggs per ovariole and length of the ovariole when compared with those of the corresponding parameters of the carrier control, whereas in $CSR_2\;and\;CSR_2{\times}CSR_4$ crossbreed races showed a significant increase in larva1 weight and other parameters similar to that of $CSR_4$ race. The results suggested that the silkgland showed good response to minerals mixture of potassium bromide and nickel sulphate only in $CSR_4$ race when compared with those of other two races of the silkworm, B. mori.
Isozyme was used to characterize general protein patterns of genetic relationships among 303 silkworm stocks preserved in National Sericultural and Entomology Research Institute, RDA. Six isozymes (esterase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, amylase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and sucrase) from hemolymph, midgut, and digestive juice were employed to construct dendograms(UPGMA method) using a polycrylamide gel electrophoresis. A cluster analysis revealed four major group, which were divided into several subgroups within each group, contained assemglages of Japanese and Chinese races. Especially, genetic differentiation in the first and second group was greatest rather than within Japanese and Chinese races repectively and was concordant with the hypothesis of phyletic sorting of initial variability in China many years ago. Hypothesized recent introgression between groups was also plausible, but the eviednce suggested bidirectional gene flow between the Chinese and the Japnaese lineages. Interpreting the results in light of evidence from the current study, the genetic diversity and relationship showed in Korean silkworm race, Hansammyun reflected early and independent evolution from the Chinese ancestor, limited addition of new variability and phyletic sorting within Korean peninsula more than 4,000 years.

By means of correlation analysis and path coefficient analysis, 18 characteristics of 325 conserved silkworm races were studied for the selecting efficiency on main silk quality characteristics. The result showed that selecting lines with heavier cocoon weight are beneficial to raise the weight of have. Choosing strains with higher cocoon shell percentage, longer filament length and better reelability percentage is good for increasing non-broken filament length. Selecting lines with medium daily weight of have produced in the fifth instar, medium cocoon shell percentage and simultaneously selecting heavier cocoon shell weight are favorable to promote reelability percentage. Choosing strains with heavier cocoon weight, higher cocoon shell percentage, heavier daily weight of bave produced in the fifth instar and heavier weight of bave but shorter filament length may hopefully breed out a race with thick filament size. And selecting strains with heavier weight of have and fine filament size are beneficial to increase filament length. Selecting lines with higher cocoon shell percentage and heavier weight of bave are favorable to raise raw silk percentage of cocoon. There are no significant direct or indirect correlation coefficient between viability and major characteristics of silk quality. It is, therefore, feasible to breed a silkworm race with excellent vitality and good silk quality as well.

Soluble proteins of silkworm hemolymph were investigated by means of isoelectric focusing (IEF). The protein spectra during ontogenesis of races and inter-races hybrids kept in Bulgaria was studied. A total of 51 protein bands in the hemolymph from fourth larval instar to imago were ascertained. Stage specific expression was established. The specific expression of some protein bands in the individual spectra manifest phenotype of gene determinate polymorphism (HP F, HP J, HP K, HP L, HP Q - in the zone with pH gradient 3.5-6.2 and HP K, HP L, HP N, HP P, HP T - in the zone with pH gradient 9.5 - 6.2). Breed specific expression was observed. On the basis of the obtained results, it was established that the investigated breeds are heterogeneous and the isoelectric focusing method is successful when specifying the inner-race and inter-race polymorphism in silkworm.
