The following results were obtained through the experiments and study of fertility for silkworm eggs in vagina, oviduct, and ovarial base. The sample eggs were collected after leaving silkworm moth for one week from the date of treatment was given to oviporm orifice of the silkworm moth by heated needle in order to discontinue laying eggs. Those sample silkworm moths were divided into two groups. The first group was under the condition of immediately after the couplation and the second group was under the condition of after the laying eggs in some extend, and both of them were completed couplation. The sample eggs were screened in order to confirm the degree of color which normally be observed as very characteristic during hibernating. 1. About 5% of silkworm out of the total sample were identified as having 1-2 eggs. (See table 1). But, the charasteristic colour of hibernating egg was not observed. The colour was not much different as that of eggs in ovarian duct. 2. Immediately after the couplation, the eggs were not found in vagina under the condition of immediately after the couplation. 3. About 10% of the sample under the condition of after laying eggs in some extend were found having eggs in vagina or oviduct. 4. About 2% of the sample silkworm moth under the condition of immediately after the couplation were found having I fertilized egg in oviduct. 5. No fertilized egg was found in ovarian tube. It seemed that sperm did not enter ovarian tube. 6. Almost the entire eggs were found in ovarian tube under the condition of immediately after the couplation. But, eggs under the condition of after laying eggs in some extend were found around oviduct and vagina due to the continuous movement of silkworm eggs towards oviporus orifice. 7. Sperm is mainly found around seminal receptacle and vagina, and sperm goes into micropyle together with silkworm eggs which were moving towards oviduct.

Silkworm transgenesis scientists have done some genetic modification work on multivoltine silkworms, but that type of silkworms is less commercial feasible. They are easy to manipulate, because they breed all year round. But the commercial silkworm variety must undergo hydrochloric acid treatment at a high temperature to be artificially hatched. Hydrochloric acid penetrates through the holes in the silkworm eggs, fatally damaging their reproduction. So it had been thought that altering the properties of the commercial silkworm variety would be very difficult. So we have tried to make from diapause to non-diapause eggs using diapauses varieties, 'Backokjam' and 'Jam 124'. At present, our group has establishing the conditions for non-diapause eggs. Oviposited eggs after 40 ~ 60 hours were incubated for 24 hours at $15{\sim}20^{\circ}C$ with dark condition. Non-diapause eggs were completely induced. The hatching rate, molting rate and pupation rate of non-diapause 'Jam 124' and 'Backokjam' eggs showed no differences compared to diapause eggs. When transgenic silkworm using the non-diapause eggs, the hatching rate showed that non-diapause eggs induced from diapause were 40 ~ 70%, diapause eggs treated with artificial incubation were 10 ~ 30%, and polyvoltine strains, HM eggs were 30 ~ 50%. Therefore, we suggest that modification techniques of the commercial silkworm eggs adequate for silkworm transgenesis can be used to develop transgenic silkworms more easily.
Today most of farmers rear the silkworms two time a year, spring and autumn (Fig. 1). But from now on, we can rear whenever mulberry tree is grown, and it is expected that we can rear many times (Fig.2). Because the silkworm eggs can not always be hatched, we have to study a special method for rearing many times a year. The writer, in these problems, hatched the silkworm eggs from the beginning of June to the beingning of September, once every 10 days, and reard 10 times. The results are as follows; 1) The silkworm eggs for the beginning and middle of June have no difference between the double cooling method and the single cooling method. But the eggs for the end of June in the double cooling method is better. 2) For the silkworm eggs for the middle of July, the cooling method after acid treatment for eggs is better. 3) For the silkworm eggs for the end of July, the reeling method after acid treatment is better. But it is needed to study the short artificial treatment. 4) For the eggs for the beginning of August, the further study of the short artificial treatment is also needed. 5) For the eggs for the middle of August, after cooling treatment is better. The short artificial treatment is possible for them. But further study is needed. 6) For the eggs for the beginning of September, after cooling treatment is needed for further study.

The present investigation reports a phenomenon hitherto unknown in tropical sericulture, wherein dia-pause nature of bivoltine eggs is overcome through a cross with a non-diapausing race of silkworm, Bombyx mori, L. Eggs of bivoltine silkworm Bombyx mori, L. generally do not hatch under tropical conditions. To prevent diapause, they are subjected to acid treatment or low temperature hibernation scheduled. A race developed at KSSRDI is found to prevent the diapause nature of bivoltine eggs when crossed as male parent, without any acid treatment or hibernation schedule. This phenomenon is reported for the first time, being unique, opens up interesting area of research in silkworm genetics of commercial implications in the industry.
The silkworm eggs and silkworm larvae were treated with X-Rays, and then the mutations were induced artificially. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The best range of time was from 1 to 1.5 seconds to induce the mutations. 2. The silkworm-eggs treated with X-rays were almost malformes, unmoulting or radiation sick. 3. Silkworm-eggs laid by the moth-fed on penicillin in 1963 were also treated with x-rays. Many useful ones were found from them. 4. There is the possibility of silkworm improvement by inducing mutations with x-rays. Further studies are therefore needed in this field.

Quality of seed in the mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori (L.) is determined by many important factors, wherein unfertilized eggs play an important role. Unfertilization of eggs are caused by several reasons such as, abnormality in the sexual organs of the male and female, abnormal development of the micropylar end of the egg, unfavorable environmental conditions during spinning, cocoon preservation, imperfect handling of moths, mating, ovipostion, cold storing of pupae / moths and indiscriminate use of male moths etc. Though the presence of unfertilized eggs would in no way affect the fertilized ones and their quality directly, the frequency of their occurrence underrates the quality and brings down the hatching percentage. Lower the occurrence of unfertilized eggs, higher is the rating of seed quality. Of the various intrinsic and extrinsic factors and events involved in egg deposition of an adult silk moth, mating is an instinct and a biological obligation for the ultimate perpetuation of the species and a must to provide stimulus for oogenesis and bring about biochemical changes in the spermatophore of the silkworm in order to ensure the presence of sufficient number of normal sperms and testicular fluid in the female reproductive organ, activating ovulation and accelerating oviposition behavior and egg deposition. An attempt has been made in this article to briefly elucidate the characteristics of unfertilized eggs, causes of their occurrence and its impact as well as the significance in silkworm seed production.

The silkworm performs sexual reproduction for the production of its healthy offsprings from generations to generations. Parthenogenesis in the silkworm, Bombyx mori acquires immense use in the development of outstanding homozygouse lines with higher viability, hybrid vigour, combining ability and less phenotypic variability, and it can serve as a powerful tool in controlling sex of the offsprings as well as a useful tool in selection of breeding schemes. However, naturally occuring parthenogenesis in silkworm could not be found so far. Fortunately, artificial induction of parthenogenesis is possible in silkworm. So, it is very important to find out novel methods for induction of parthenogenesis. We investigated to attempt to get a novel parthenogenetic method. Accordingly, parthenogenetic studies on between unfertilized in vivo ovarian eggs of live silkworm moth(novel) and unfertilized in vitro ovarian eggs(conventional) taken out from live silkworm moth were investigated by hot water ($46^{\circ}C$), hot air ($46^{\circ}C$) and low temperature ($0^{\circ}C$ and $-20^{\circ}C$) treatments. The best ratio of parthenogenetic eggs was obtained with in vivo ovarian eggs of live silkworm moth rather than with in vitro ovarian eggs taken out from live silkworm moth in all the treatments. The optimum exposure time absolutely depended upon the temperatures of treatments and the forms of in vivo or in vitro ovarian eggs. From these results, we expect that in vivo artificial parthenogenetic treatments on live silkworm moth will be useful for the higher induction of parthenogenesis in the silkworm, B. mori.
Nosema bombycis was found on the both of surface and inside of silkworm eggs layed by infected female moth, maternal-mediated transmission of those pathogens via the surface or internal site of silkworm eggs were investigated. All of the meconia from infected female moths contained pathogenic spores, those concentration were 4.6(${\pm}$0.24)X106 /ml. The pathogens on the surface of nondiapause eggs were transmitted to the progeny larvae at the rate of 54.5%, however, lost their activity before hatching for the case of overwintered eggs or acid treatment(16% HCI at 46.2$^{\circ}C$ for 6 min). N. bombycis in the silkworm eggs localized at the serosa, yolk, embryo except chorion tissue in the silkworm eggs layed by infected female moths. Development of the pathognes in the eggs was synchronized with embryogenesis, which secured the safety of pathogens against environmental condition, resulting in the high transmissibility of 91.2${\pm}$1.80%.

Variations in protein and nucleic acid concentrations were observed in 24 hrs old eggs and hatched larvae of Nistari strain, Bombyx mori, exposed to starvation. Three starvation treatments of 24,48 and 60 hrs were given separately from 0 hr old fifth instar larvae. Biochemical variations were studied in the resultant hatched larvae of one time starved parent, while the eggs obtained from parents receiving starvation in two successive generations were considered for the study. In hatched larvae, protein levers in 24 hrs starvation groups remained significantly higher over control (never starved) while the same was found to be lower in 48 and 60 hrs starvation individuals. The RNA concentration remained significantly higher in all the treated lots. However, DNA content was not found to be significantly altered in hatched larvae after exposure to feeding stress. Protein, RNA and DNA concentration of 24 hrs old eggs produced by all the starved groups of Nistari, which had deceived two consecutive starvation during parental generations, showed higher concentrations of these biomolecules over control. Hence, starvation induced alterations in protein and nucleic acids in eggs and hatched Iarvae are indicative of a preparatory phase adopted by the insect to acclimatise itself and its progeny to stress situations.

The rate of oxygen consumption of the silkworm eggs was measured to set up the barometer for measuring the effect of egg chilling on diapause termination. In diapause eggs, $O_2$ uptake showed a maximum of 79.2 ${mu}ell$/mg eggs/hr, at one day after oviposition and then gradually decreased to 2.2${mu}ell$/mg eggs/hr at 9days. The rates of oxygen uptake of eggs raised immediately after HCl-treatment and reached to a maximal level of 484.5 ${mu}ell$/mg eggs/hr in 9-day-old eggs, which corresponds to 220 fold that of diapause eggs, and the hatching ability was also over 50%. In order to break diapause, eggs incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 30 days after oviposition had to be kept at least for 45 days at 5$^{\circ}C$, but chilled eggs for 90 days or longer hatched at 10 days as normal hatching periods. We also investigate periods which the value of $O_2$ uptake of eggs chilled during 15 to 120 days at 5$^{\circ}C$ reached at 200 ${mu}ell$/mg eggs/hr. As a result of that, $O_2$ uptake of eggs chilled during 15 to 45days were not reached at 200 ${mu}ell$/mg eggs/hr and longer the chilling durations are, the higher the rate of $O_2$ uptake is and the longer the chilling durations are, the shorter the periods up to hatching is. And also, hatch-ability increased rapidly as $O_2$ uptake reaches over 20/eggs/hr.
