  • To evaluate the corrosion behavior of reaction bonded silicon carbides, corrosion test was studied for various corrosive environments. Corrosion test for reaction bonded silicon carbides was conducted at 900$^{\circ}C$ under four different gas atmospehres ; air, So2-air, Cl2-O2-Ar, Cl2-N2 and investigated these samples using weight loss, bending strength, XRD, optical micrographs and EDS respectively.

  • The high temperature properties of vanadium and molybdenum added high silicon ductile iron, so called V-Mo-Si ductile iron, were investigated. The (V,Mo) complex carbides and Mo carbides precipitated at the cellular boundaries of the as-cast specimens. The microhardness of the (V,Mo) carbides were in the range of 553-619, while that of the Mo carbides in the range of 341-390. The thermo-mechanical tests were carried out with a Gleeble system at 700 and $800^{\circ}C$ under vacuum condition. The tensile strengths of the specimen tested at $700^{\circ}C$ with the dynamic deformation rate of 50 mm/sec and those with the static deformation rate of 0.15 mm/sec were 235.7 and 115.3 MPa, while the reduction in area were 23.7 and 22.4%, respectively. At the high dynamic deformation rates, the tensile strength was steeply increased due to promoting the brittle fracture of pearlite in the matrix of the specimens. But the changes of the reduction in area with the deformation rates on the same specimens were negligible. The weight gain of the V-Mo-Si specimens oxidized in the air atmosphere for 6 hours at 800 and $900^{\circ}C$ were 1.1 and 4.1.%, respectively. The cross-sectional microstructure of oxidized specimens consisted of the porous external scale layer grown outside from the original surface, the dense internal scale layer grown into the original surface, the decarburized ferrite layer between the internal scale and the matrix of base metal. The (V,Mo) carbides and Mo carbides formed in the matrix of as-cast specimen did not decompose during oxidation at 900 for 24 hours in air atmosphere.

  • Silicon carbides with self-reinforced microstructure which hore a small grain matrix and dispersed large grains with rod-like type were prepared by the liquid-phase sintering and the control of starting phases of raw materials. The specimens with self-reinforced microstructure could be obtained from the compacts with mixed compositions of $\alpha$-SiC and 10-50 % $\beta$-SiC powders and by the pressureless sintering at 185$0^{\circ}C$ for 5h. Large grains with rod or plate-like types were 4H-SiC and small grains with equi-axed type were 6H-SiC. Fracture grains with rod or plate-like types were 4h-SiC and small grains with equi-axed type were 6H-SiC. Fracture toughness of specimens with self-reinforced microstructure was increased by the crack deflection and formation of microcracking due to the existence of rod-like large grains during crack propagation.

  • The matrix changes and graphite formation in high manganese cast iron (Fe-12Mn-3.5C) are studied with increasing nickel and silicon content. Also, the decomposition of carbides and graphite precipitation are studied by adequate heat treatment. The results obtained in this work are as follows. 1. In high manganese cast iron, fine flakes graphite appeared by adding 5 wt% nickel and A-type flakes graphite can be obtained by adding 7 wt% nickel. 2. Nodular graphite are obtained by graphite spheroidizing treatment with same melt. 3. In high manganese cast iron containing 7 wt% nickel, full austenitic matrix with nodular graphite can be achieved by water quenching after 10 hours' solution heat treatment at $1050^{\circ}C$ in case of containing 2.0 wt% silicon, and 6 hours' at the same temperature in case of containing 2.5 wt% silicon.

  • Liquid phase sintered silicon carbides were obtained by sintering of $\alpha$-SiC and $\beta$-SiC powders as starting materials at 2173K and 2273K respectively. The SiCplatelet seeds of different sizes were obtained by a repeated ball milling and sedimentation. Their mean size (d50) were 2.217 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ 13.67 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 22.17${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively 6wt%Al2O3-4 wt% Y2O3 was used as the sintering additives for the liquid phase sintering. The two silicon carbides had a bimodal microstructure consisting of small matrix grains and large platelike grains when the SiCplatelet seeds were added. In the case of the $\beta$-SiC the appreciable phase transformation occurred as sintering temperature increased from 2173K to 2273K and resulted in matrix shape change from equiaxed into platelike grains. In contrast there was no shape change for the $\alpha$-SiC. The size of large grains in the $\alpha$-SiC of large grains in the $\alpha$-SiC was larger than that of the large grains in the $\beta$-SiC These results suggested that the growth of the $\alpha$-SiCplatelet in the $\alpha$-SiC matrix was more favored than that of the $\alpha$-SiCplatelet in the $\beta$-SiC matix. The three point flexural strength decreased as the added seed size increased. Fracture toughness values of samples sintered at 2273K were higher than those of samples sintered at 2173K.

  • ${\beta}$-silicon carbides with yttrium aluminum garnet of 2,5,10 mol% were prepared by a liquid--phase sint-ering and the microstructural evolution and phase transformation were investigated during sintering as functions of liquid-phase amount and sintering time. The rate of grain growth decreases with the addition of the amount of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) in the SiC starting powder however the apparent density and the aspect ratio of grains in sintered body increase. The phase transformation from ${\beta}$-SiC to ${\alpha}$-SiC were dependent on the liquid-phase amount and sintering time.

  • The T-curve, wear and erosion behaviors of two different silicon carbides, i.e., the fine grained SiC and the in situ-toughened SiC(IST-SiC). Both materials exhibited an increasing T-curve behavior, although the T-curve of IST-SiC was steeper than that of fine grained SiC. The fracture toughness of IST-SiC was larger than that of fine grained SiC at long crack regime, whereas an opposite tendency occurred at short crack regime. The rate of material removal during wear and erosion tests was higher in IST-SiC compared to fine grained SiC. The difference between the material removal rates of two materials was discussed in the light of their R-curve behaviors.

  • The inner surfaces of bundled inconel tubes from steam generators in South Korean nuclear power plants are contaminated with cobalt and abrasive blasting equipment has been developed to efficiently remove the cobalt. The principal parameters related to the efficient removal using this equipment are the type of abrasive, the distance from the nozzle, and the blasting time. Preliminary tests were performed using oxidized inconel samples which enabled the simulation of cobalt removal from the radioactive inconel samples. The oxygen in the oxidized samples and the cobalt in the radioactive inconel were removed more effectively using the blasting distance, blasting time, and a silicon carbide abrasive. Using the developed abrasive blasting equipment, the optimum decontamination conditions for radioactive inconel samples were blasting for more than 6 minutes using silicon carbides under 5 atmospheric pressures.
