  • Red phosphor in glasses (PiGs) for automotive light-emitting diode (LED) applications were fabricated with 620-nm $CaAlSiN_3:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor and Pb-free silicate glass. PiGs were synthesized and mounted on high-power blue LED to make a monochromatic red LED. PiGs were simple mixtures of red phosphor and transparent glass powder. After being fabricated with uniaxial press and CIP at 300 MPa for 20 min, the green bodies were thermally treated at $550^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to produce high dense PiGs. As the phosphor content increased, the density of the sintered body decreased and PiGs containing 30% phosphor had a full sintered density. Changes in photoluminescence spectra and color coordination were studied by varying the thickness of plates that were mounted after optical polishing. As a result of the optical spectrum and color coordinates, PiG plate with $210{\mu}m$ thickness showed a color purity of 99.7%. In order to evaluate the thermal stability, the thermal quenching characteristics were measured at temperatures of $30{\sim}150^{\circ}C$. The results showed that the red PIG plates were 30% more thermally stable compared to the AlGaInP red chip.

  • Sodium borate silicate glass of composition $10Na_2O-39B_2O_3-50SiO_2-CoO$ and $20Na_2O-14B_2O_3-65SiO_2-CoO$ were prepared by melting oxide mixtures in alumina crucible at $1210^{\circ}C$ in an electric furance in air for 2h, and then quenching in air. The dielectric behavior of the quenched glasses are the subject of the present work. Properties such as dielectric constant and resistivity as a function frequency and temperature are reported. From the dielectric spectra, the glass phase transition temperature has been found to decrease at a rate $Na_2O$ 20 mol% and the dielectric constants increase with increasing $Na_2O$ content. The frequency dependent resistivity response of glass exhibits a non-Debye type relaxation.

  • The atomic-nano scale structures of multi-component aluminosilicate glasses have not been well understood in spite of its implications fur dynamics and generation of magma in the natural system due to lack of suitable spectroscopic and scattering experiments. Here, we report O-17 MAS and isotropic projection of 3QMAS NMR spectra for quaternary Na-Ca silicate glasses $[(CaO)_x(Na_2O)_{1-x}]\;(A1_2O_3)_{0.5}(SiO_2)_6,\;CNAS)$ at 14.1 Tesla where atomic configurations around bridging oxygen (Si-O-Si, Si-O-Al) and non bridging oxygen (Na-O-Si, Ca-O-Si, (Na, Ca)-O-Si) are partially resolved. With increasing Na content, the fraction of Na-O-Si increases while those for bridging oxygens remain constant. The Na/Ca ratio apparently affects the peak widths of bridging oxygen peaks (e.g., Si-O-Si)) and thus the topological entropy as well as chemical shifts of the bridging oxygen peaks, implying that both BOs and NBOs are strongly interacting with network modifying cations The effect of cation field strength on the degree of Al-avoidance was also discussed.

  • The effects of glass composition on the wettability and reactivity with $ZrO_2$substrate was evaluated and fabrication variables and glass compositions was investigated. Various glass compositions was investigated. Alkaline earth silicate glass show good wettability and lower viscosity and crystallization of glass could be prevented by $B_2O_3$.The sealant glass begin to wet on $ZrO_2$substrate below $900^{\circ}C$ and porosity occurred in various glass compositions, the crystallization and porosity in the glass could be prevented by the addition of flux into glass composition. But flowability and reactivity of glass with $ZrO_2$substrate was enhanced. Processing variables should be optimized to reduce the porosity by enhancing the sintering of glass powder. Many silicate glasses were investigated for the applications of high temperature sealants. Wetting and bonding of glass was good enough to seal together between $ZrO_2$and other ceramic components of SOFC. But porosity and reaction layer were occurred in the sealant glass. It will be possible to produce glass sealant without porosity and reaction layer at the interface by optimization of processing variable and modify the glass compositions. In present study, wettability of glass-filler composite was investigated. The porosity, shape of filler and interfacial reactions of sealant glass with fillers were examined.

  • For self-developed alkali-alkaline earth-silicate and commercial glass melts for plasma display panel substrate, the corrosion behavior of fused casting refractory consisting of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2-SiO_2$ was examined at the temperature corresponding to $10^2\;dPa{\cdot}s$ of melt viscosity by static finger methode. The corroded refractory specimens showed a typical concave shape due to interfacial convection of melts at their flux line. However, the corrosion thickness by commercial glass melts was $6\sim10$ times comparing to that by the self?developed melts. From the view point of the glass composition and the role of alkaline earth in glass network, it was discussed the effect of alkali/alkaline earth diffusion and temperature on the refractory corrosion.

  • We studied whether chemical strengthening can heal the flaws on soda-lime silicate glass. Artificial surface cracks were introduced on the glass by sharp indentation with various loads of 0.1 to 10 N. Then, the glasses with flaws were treated by ion-exchanging in KNO3 melt. The change in the dimension of the crack on glass was measured by a digital microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The chemical strengthening treatment enhances the strength of the glass with flaws. It is thought that the melted KNO3 not only forms the depth of the compressed layer of 7.5 ㎛, but also heals the cracks by infiltrating them and expanding the glass on both sides of the cracks. The critical length (2c) of the cracks on soda-lime glass that can be healed by chemical strengthening is 50 ㎛ or less.

  • Transparent bulletproof windows play an important role in the munitions industry. The thickness of bulletproof windows including soda-lime silicate(SLS) glass, polyvinyl butyral, poly urethane, main defense(200MD), and safety film was reduced from 40mm to 29mm by adjustment of SLS glass laminated array. Borosilicate glasses generally have lower surface density and more excellent mechanical properties than SLS glass. Borosilicate glass was strengthened by ion exchange in the $KNO_3$ powder. The maximum mechanical properties were observed at $550^{\circ}C$ for 10min. The Vickers hardness, fracture toughness and 3-point bending strength of ion exchanged samples were about $775kg/mm^2$, $1.91MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ and 764MPa each, which are about 27%, 149% and 249% higher than parent borosilicate glass, respectively. The penetration depth of K+ ion at $550^{\circ}C$ for 10min was $59.8{\mu}m$. As a result, the transparent bulletproof windows were predicted to be more lightweight by ion exchange of borosilicate glass. If the SLS glass for bulletproof windows is replaced by ion exchanged borosilicate glass, the bulletproof windows can be expected to be lightweight and thinner.

  • We have been investigated the effects of the initial pH of the aquous solution, reaction temperature and time for the flaking of the soda-lime glass container. Flaking of glass occuurred in the cases of the $121^{\circ}C$, above pH 11 of solution with no $Mg^{2+}$ ions in solution. The pH of the solution approached to pH 10 under the conditions of below pH 9 of start solution. The flaking mechanism of the glass seem to be composed of formation of leached layer of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Na^{2+}$ ion and separation of these layers during the cooling by the difference of thermal expansion between leached layer and glass surface. The leaching of alkali ions in glass depends on the pH condition of the start solution and the temperature. In the case of $Mg^{2+}$ ions are added, $Mg^{2+}$ ions accelerate the flaking of the sodalime glasses and forms the magnesium silicate compound which result in the decrease of the pH of the solution.

  • Glass composites containing ceramic fiber have been developed for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) seals. Effect of glass type, loading pressure and thermal cycle the leak rates of composite seals was investigated. Seal performance of two commercial glasses was compared with that of $SiO_2BaO-B_2O_3$ glass synthesized in this work. The leak rate for seals made of pyrex(R) increases from $\~0.0005\;to\;\~0.004sccm/cm$ as the gas pressure increases from 10 to 50 kPa. The soda lime silicate glass seal shows the leak rate two times higher than the one made of pyrex(R) or $SiO_2BaO-B_2O_3$ glass. The viscosity of glass at the seal test temperature is presumed to affect the leak rate of the glass seal. As the applied loading pressure increases from 0.4 to 0.8 MPa at $750^{\circ}C$, the leak rate decreases from 0.038 to 0.024 sccm/cm for composite seals. It has been found that during 50 thermal cycles between $450^{\circ}C\;to\;700^{\circ}C$ leak rates remained almost constant, ranging from 0.025 to 0.03sccm/cm. The results showed an excellent thermal cycle stability as well as sealability of the glass matrix ceramic fiber composite seals.

  • The Mg-enriched magnesium aluminum silicate (MAS) glass is known for its higher mechanical strength and chemical resistance. Among such glasses, cordierite ($Mg_2Al_4Si_5O_{18}$) is well known to have a low thermal expansion and low melting point. Polycrystalline engineering ceramics such as alumina can be strengthened by a surface modification with low thermal expansion materials. The present study involves the synthesis of cordierite by a sol-gel process and investigates the effect of glass penetration on the surface of alumina. The cordierite powders were prepared from $Al(OC_3H_7)_3$, $Mg(OC_2H_5)_2$ and tetraethyl orthosilicate by hydrolysis and condensation reaction. The cordierite powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD, Rigaku), scanning electron microscope (SEM, JEOL: JSM-5610), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS, JEOL: JSM-5610), and universal testing machine (UTM, INSTRON). The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the synthesized particles were ${\mu}$-cordierite calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The shape of synthesized cordierite was changed from ${\mu}$-cordierite to ${\alpha}$-cordierite with increasing calcination temperature. Synthesized cordierite was used for surface modification of alumina. Cordierite powders penetrated deeply into the alumina sample along grain boundaries with increasing temperature. The results of surface modification tests showed that the strength of the prepared alumina sample increased after surface modification. The strength of a surface modified with synthesized cordierite increased the most, to about 134.6MPa.
