Synthesis of Size Controlled Spherical Silica Nanoparticles via Sol-Gel Process within Hydrophilic Solvent

  • In this study, based on hydrolysis and condensation via $St{\ddot{o}}ber$ process of sol-gel method, synthesis of mono-dispersed silica nanoparticles was carried out with hydrophilic solvent. This operation was expected to be a more simplified process than that with organic solvent. Based on the sol-gel method, which involves simply controlling the particle size, the particle size of the synthesized silica specimens were ranged from 30 to 300 nm by controlling the composition of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), DI water and ammonia solution, and by varying the stirring speeds while maintaining a fixed amount of ethanol. Increasing the content of DI water and decreasing the content of ammonia caused the particle size to decrease, while controlling the stirring speed at a high level of RPMs enabled a decrease of the particle size. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were utilized to investigate the success factors for synthesizing process; Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was used to study the effects of the size and morphology of the synthesized particles. To analyze the dispersion properties, zeta potential and particle size distribution (PSD) analyses were utilized.

실리카 주형을 이용한 메크로/메조다공성 탄화규소 세라믹의 제조와 비교특성 (Fabrication and Characterization of Macro/Mesoporous SiC Ceramics from SiO2 Templates)

  • 입자크기가 20∼700nm인 구형 실리카입자의 자연침강 혹은 원심분리법으로 제조한 주형체에 탄화규소 전구체 polymethyl-silane (PMS) 혹은 polycarbosilane (PCS) 고분자 용액을 함침한다음, 가교 및 1000∼140$0^{\circ}C$ 열분해하고 마지막으로 불산 (HF)으로 실리카를 식각하여 84∼658nm 기공이 3차원으로 정렬된 메크로다공성(macroporous) 탄화규소 세라믹과 불규칙적인 15∼65nm 기공을 가진 메조다공성(mesoporous) 탄화규소 세라믹을 제조하였다. 전자는 112nm 실리카 입자 주형체를 사용하여 140$0^{\circ}C$로 처리했을 때, 표면적 584.64$m^2$g$^{-1}$을 나타낸 반면, 후자는 20-30nm 실리카 주형체를 사용하여 100$0^{\circ}C$로 처리하였을때, 최대의 표면적 619.4$m^2$g$^{-1}$를 나타내었다, 이와 같이 사용된 실리카 입자, 고분자 전구체, 그리고 열처리 조건에 따른 기공특성을 SEM. TEM 및 BET으로 분석 설명하였다.

  • To fabricate dental nanocomposites containing finely dispersed silica nanoparticles, nearly monodispersed silica nanoparticles smaller than 25 nm were synthesized without forming any aggregates via a modified sol-gel process. Since silica nanoparticles synthesized by the Stober method formed aggregates when the particle size is smaller than 25 nm, the synthetic method was modified by changing the reaction temperature and adding poly(1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone) (PVP) to the reaction mixture. The size of the formed silica nanoparticles was reduced by increasing the reaction temperature or adding PVP. Furthermore, the formation of aggregates with primary silica nanoparticles smaller than 25 nm was prevented by increasing the amount of PVP added to the reaction mixture. To enhance the dispersion of the silica particles in an organic matrix, the synthesized silica nanoparticles were treated with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane ($\gamma$-MPS). A dental nanocomposite containing finely dispersed silica nanoparticles could be produced by using the surface-treated silica nanoparticles.

Effects of Ultrasonic Irradiation on Physical Properties of Silica/PEG Hybrids

  • The effect of ultrasonic radiation is reported for silica-poly(ethylene glycol) system prepared without the solvent using sol-gel processing by varying various parameters such as ultrasonic irradiation time, PEG content and HCl/TEOS molar ratio. The property of sonogel is compared with classic gel which has been prepared with ethanol as a solvent by traditional sol-gel processing. SEM, BET, DTA-TGA, density and Vickers hardness measurements are carried out for analyzing the samples. The gelation time is found strongly dependent on radiation time, PEG content and pH value, and has been discussed on the basis of existing theories. The $SiO_2-10$ & 20 wt% PEG sonogel exhibited superior optical, physical and gel properties as compared to the classic gel, hence, found suitable for device applications. The ultrasonic radiation increased the density and surface area, and also reduced the pore size which is well supported by the shift in the peak of DTA curve. The DTA thermogram was found similar to that of pure silica gel.

Characterization of Silica/EVOH Hybrid Coating Materials Prepared by Sol-Gel Method

  • In this study, the silica-based hybrid material with high barrier property was prepared by incorporating ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer, which has been utilized as packaging materials due to its superior gas permeation resistance, during sol-gel process. In preparation of this EVOH/$SiO_2$ hybrid coating materials, the (3-glycidoxy-propyl)-trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) as a silane coupling agent was employed to promote interfacial adhesion between organic and inorganic phases. As confirmed from FT-IR analysis, the physical interaction between two phases was improved due to the increased hydrogen bonding, resulting in homogeneous microstructure with dispersion of nano-sized silica particles. However, depending on the range of content of added silane coupling agent (GPTMS), micro-phase separated microstructure in the hybrid could be observed due to insufficient interfacial attraction or possibility of polymerization reaction of epoxide ring in GPTMS. The oxygen barrier property of the mono-layer coated BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) film was examined for the hybrids containing various GPTMS contents. Consequently, it is revealed that GPTMS should be used in an optimum level of content to produce the high barrier EVOH/$SiO_2$ hybrid material with an improved optical transparency and homogeneous phase morphology.

Electrical and thermal properties of polyamideimide-colloid silica nanohybrid for magnetic enameled wire

  • Polyamidimide (PAI)-colloidal silica (CS) nanohybrid films were synthesized by an advanced sol-gel process. The synthesized PAI-CS hybrid films have a uniform and stable chemical bonding and there is no interfacial defects observed by TEM. The thermal degradation ratio of PAI-CS (10 wt%) hybrid films is delayed by 100 ℃ compared with pure PAI sample determined by on set temperature range in TGA. The dielectric constant of PAI-CS (10 wt%) hybrid films decreases with increasing CS content up to about 5 wt% but increases at higher CS content, which is not explained simply by effective medium therories (EMT). The duration time of PAI-CS (10 wt%) hybrid coil is 38 sec, which is very longer than that of pure PAI coil sample. The PAI-CS (10 wt%) hybrid film has a higher breakdown voltage resistance than the pure PAI film at surge environment and exhibits superior heat resistance. The PAI-CS (10 wt%) sample shows the advanced and stable thermal emission properties in transformer module compared with the pure PAI sample. This result illustrates that the advanced thermal conductivity and expansion properties of PAI-CS sample in the case of appropriate sol-gel processes brings the stable thermal emission in transformer system. Therefore, new PAI-CS hybrid samples with such stable thermal emission properties are expected to be used as a high functional coating application in ET, IT and electric power products.

다공성 실리카 지지체 제조 및 Sol-Gel법에 의한 TiO2코팅 (Preparation of Porous Silica Support and TiO2 Coating by Sol-Gel Method)

  • 슬러리 발포법을 이용하여 다공성 실리카 지지체를 제조하였으며, 지지체 표면에 졸-겔법을 이용하여 TiO$_2$을 코팅하였다. TiO$_2$ 코팅층에 대한 XRD, SEM 및 BET 측정 결과, 열처리 온도가 50$0^{\circ}C$에서 TiO$_2$의 anatase 결정상이 나타나기 시작하여, $700^{\circ}C$에서 그 피크가 최대가 되었다. 이 때 결정 성장한 TiO$_2$ 입자의 크기는 약 1$mu extrm{m}$ 정도로 판명되었다. 또한, 촉매지지체로 활용성을 검토하기 위해 TiO$_2$코팅 전후로 지지체의 굽힘 강도와 기체 투과율을 측정하였다. 강도의 경우, 코팅 전 2.4 MPa에서 이후 3.9∼4.3MPa로 증가하였으나 열처리 온도의 영향에 의한 변화는 나타나지 않았다. 한편, 투과율은 코팅 전 770${\times}$$10^{-13}$ $m^2$에서 코팅 후 363${\times}$$10^{-13}$ $m^2$로 감소하였고 열처리 온도의 증가와 함께 감소하는 것으로 나타났다.

  • 유기 금속화합물을 출발물질로 이용하는 졸-겔 방법으로 균열이 없는 유기-무기 복합 실리카 박막을 제작하였으며, 코팅방법, 조성비, prebake, postbake 온도 등의 제작조건에 따른 박막의 두께 및 굴절률의 변화를 체계적으로 조사하여 재현성 있는 제작조건을 확립하였다. 특히 광개시제를 첨가하였을 때 자외선 노광량에 따른 광학적 성질변화를 세 가지 광개시제에 대하여 측정, 비교하였다. 또한 졸-겔 박막으로 다중모드 간섭을 이용한 광 파워 분배기를 제작하여 광소자로의 응용 가능성을 살펴보았다.

  • We report on the polarization-insensitive design and fabrication of an arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG's) using sol-gel derived silica glass films formed on fused silica substrates to provide cheap and stable tools for better design. An arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexer with raised structure is fabricated in order to effect polarization sensitivity. Since polarization is usually not known after propagation in an optical fiber. passive WDM components such as monolithic wavelength demultiplexer have to be polarization insensitive.   • In this study we investigated the gelation time of sol which containing mixtures of TEOS with H2O, ethanol, HCl in the preparation of monolithic silica glass through Sol-Gel method. In this case apparent activation energies were observed by Arrhenius equation. We investigated the conversion from gel to glass in drying and heat treatment stages using DT-TG, FT-IR, XRD analysis and dried gel conversed to glass by heat treatment up to 85$0^{\circ}C$. The results of this experiment showed that the gelation time of solutions were promoted when increasing the amount of addition of H2O and HCl catalyst for TEOS and high reaction temperature of solution.
