Barrier ribs of plasma display panel (PDP) are glass matrix composite reinforced with alumina particles. Mechanical properties of the ribs are very crucial for the improvement in reliability of the panel as the ribs might fracture during transportation and service. In this study, therefore, the effects of filler type and content on the mechanical properties of the ribs were investigated. The fillers used include $Al_2O_3$, $TiO_2$, $ZrO_2$ and fused silica. The content of the filler was changed from 0 to 40 vol.%. The mechanical properties of the ribs measured were hardness, Young's modulus, fracture toughness, and 3-point bending modulus. The fracture toughness evaluated by micro-Vicker's indentation of the composites, in general, was measured to increase with the content of the filler until the sintered density does not decrease significantly. The improvement, however, was dependent on the type of filler employed.

Space charge formation in epoxy loaded with silica and calcium carbonate has been studied. The epoxy itself showed almost no charge at up to 40 kV/mm. The addition of fillers such as SiO$_2$and CaCO$_3$resulted in homocharge formation, which was attributed to the interfacial trapping of injected charge at epoxy/filler interfaces. The amount of charge showed a maximum at 20-40 parts per hundred resin above which the charge decreased gradually. This was tentatively attributed to the enhanced interconection of charge transport path by an increased filler content

In order to develop new insulating materials for GIS Spacer using environmentally friendly insulating gas, three kinds of dispersed liquid nano composites of solid epoxy /nano layered silicate filled material were prepared. And the epoxy/nano/micro silica composite was prepared by mixing epoxy/nano 3 phr dispersion/4 kinds of filler contents(40,50,60, 70wt%). The electrical insulation breakdown strengths of the nano and nano/micro mixed composites were evaluated by using 8 kinds of samples including the original epoxy. The mechanical tensile strength of the epoxy / nano / micro silica composite were evaluated, also. The TEM was measured to evaluate the internal structure of nano/micro composites. As a result, it was confirmed that the layered silicate nano particles was exfoliated through the process of inserting epoxy resin between silicate layers and the layers. In addition, dispersion of nano / micro silica resulted in improvement of electrical insulation breakdown strength with increase of filling amount of dense tissue with nanoparticles inserted between microparticles. In addition, the tensile strength showed a similar tendency, and as the content of microsilica filler increased, the mechanical improvement was further increased.
Mineral filler is used for resin compounds, because it increases the stiffness and thermal stability of a resin compound, and it also cuts down the cost. Calcium carbonate, silica, magnesium oxide, and others are used as filler materials in general, and the type of filler material, the size, and content can affect the physical properties of compounds. Those factors also influence the viscosity of resin mixtures and the workability, and should be adjusted by changing the contents of the filler, which depends on the size. In this study, five kinds of ground calcium carbonate, which were different in size, were used to produce polyester compounds ; the physical properties were compared with the filler size and contents. The mechanical properties were measured by bending strength and tensile strength, and the heat deflection temperature was obtained for thermal stability.

In this study, the capacitance and dielectric loss tangent of the silicone rubber which is combined with filler (30 phr~50 phr) have been measured on the range of 100 Hz~100 kHz and $30{\sim}170^{\circ}C$. It was found that when the frequency is 0.1 kHz~100 kHz and the silicone rubber is combined with 30 phr to 50 phr of filler, the capacitance of silicone rubber has increased by about 28.6 pF to 33 pF in 30 phr of filler, about 20 pF to 46.1 pF in 40 phr of filler and about 36.4 pF to 44 pF in 50 phr of filler. It seems that the volume of dielectric loss has gradually increased due to the temperature rise and the rotating of dipole in electric field through the electric dipole generated by the Si-O group which is induced by adding of filler, or the carbonyl group which is caused by oxidation. It seems that the dielectric dispersion in 0.1 kHz is caused by molecular motion of Siloxane group in main chain, and the dielectric dispersion in 10 kHz is caused by molecular motion of Methyl group in side chain.
In this study, the effects of filler particle size and shape on the physical properties of silicone rubber composites were investigated using inorganic fillers (Minusil 5, Celite 219, and Nyad 400) except silica, which was already present as a reinforcing filler of silicone rubber. Fillers with small particle sizes are known to facilitate the formation of the bound rubber by increasing the contact area with the polymer. However, in this experiment, the bound rubber content of Celite 219-added silicone composite was higher than that of Minusil 5-added silicone composite. This was attributed to the porous structure of Celite 219, which led to an increase in the internal surface area of the filler. When the inorganic fillers were added, both thermal decomposition temperature and thermal stability were improved. The bound rubber formed between the silicone rubber and inorganic filler affected the degree of crosslinking of the silicone composite. It is well-known that as the size of the reinforcing filler decreases, the reinforcing effect increases. However, in this experiment, the hardness of the composite material filled with Celite 219 was the highest compared to the other three composites. Furthermore, the highest value of 2.19 MPa was observed for 100% modulus, and the fracture elongation was the lowest at 469%. This was a result of excellent interaction between Celite 219 filler and silicone rubber.

In this study, the thermal shrinkage and expansion stresses of filled NR and SBR vulcanizates were measured to investigate the dimensional stability at an elevated temperature. When a rubber sample was held at constant pre-strain, a thermal stress developed upon heating due to the entropic consideration. The peak shrinkage stress of carbon black or silica filled NR decreased with increasing filler content. In SBR compounds, however, the peak shrinkage stress of SBR with 30 phr filler content was higher than that of unfilled compounds. The expansion stress of carbon black filled NR was changed little, but that of filled SBR increased with increasing the filler content. The peak expansion stress of silica filled NR and SBR vulcanizates increased with increasing silica content.

The effects of particle size on the mechanical and electrical properties of epoxy/spherical silica composites were studied. The silica particle sizes were varied from 5 to 30 ${\mu}m$ and the filler content was fixed to 60 wt%. Tensile and flexural tests were carried out and the interfacial morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The electrical insulation breakdown strength was estimated using sphere-sphere electrodes with different insulation thicknesses of 1, 2 and 3 mm. The tensile strength and flexural strength increased with decreasing particle size, while electrical insulation breakdown strength increased with increasing particle size.

High porous silica aerogel/polyurethane polymer composite was manufactured by cross-linking polymerization of polyurethane foaming process. The properties of microstructure, mechanical strength, and thermal properties were investigated for its various applications. The superhydrophobic silica aerogel powders were used for highly thermal insulation filler materials. The thermal conductivities can be resulted 0.07 W/mK to 0.13 W/mK, by decreasing the contents of silica aerogels in composite materials. It is found that the polymerization formulation by organic binders can be applied to heavy industires, building materials, and various industries.
Due to the polar characteristics of silica compared to carbon black, the degree of silica dispersion, which affects the mechanical properties of rubber compounds, is an important issue. Wolff first introduced the in-rubber structure of particles (${\alpha}_F$) to express the structure development in the compounds; however, with the introduction of bifunctional silanes, his theory could not explain the 3-dimensional network structure of the compounds. Later his theory was expanded to express the composite interaction parameter (in-rubber structure of the compound) (${\alpha}_C$), which included Wolff's filler-filler interaction parameter (${\alpha}_F$), however, there was no reported experimental result proving the theory. This research first experimentally expressed the in-rubber structure of the compound ${\alpha}_C$ (= ${\alpha}_F+{\alpha}_{FP}$(filler-silane-rubber interaction parameter) + ${\alpha}_P$ (rubber-rubber interaction parameter)) upon mono- and bifunctional silane treated silica filled natural rubber (NR) compounds. Using different structure silanes, i.e. PTES, OTES, TESPD, and TESPT, the ${\alpha}_C$ value of each compound was measured and calculated. The ${\alpha}_C$ value of TESPT treated silica filled compound was 1.64, which composed of ${\alpha}_F$ (0.99), ${\alpha}_{FP}$ (0.31), and ${\alpha}_P$ (0.34).
