  • Recently, the Korea National Railways (KNR) is undertaking a program of electrification of the existing railway routes. In order to implement the ongoing plan, KNR authorized a preliminary engineering study of its electrical systems. This effort included a comprehensive analysis of new grounding networks. The new grounding system runs in parallel with the rails and is connected to all metal structures such as rails, overhead protection wires and substation grounding grids etc., creating an equipotential ground network. This paper presents a study on coupling levels that can disturb signaling and telecommunications in adoption of the new grounding network The simulation for the study is carried out using Matlab software, Several different scenarios are analyzed, including the load condition and a few fault conditions with different fault locations. The induced potentials on the communication cables are computed. The effect of the buried ground wires is also analyzed by comparing the results with and without the presence of the ground wires, The results presented in the paper can be used as a reference for estimating coupling levels in similar rail systems.

  • In a wireless mesh network, there are two types of nodes: mesh routers and mesh clients. These two contradistinct network entities will be characterized and modeled depending on their role in the network. Mesh routers are essentially not mobile unlike the mesh clients. The differences on these nodes should be noted in any protocol design. In this paper, we present a mobility management for wireless mesh network (WMN). This mobility management handles movement of wireless mesh clients as it leaves from a coverage area of a wireless mesh router to another. We consider signaling overhead and mobility as performance metrics.

  • When the Mobile IP is applied for mobility management protocol in the next-generation mobile communication networks, it can cause a serious performance degradation called micro-mobility problem. In this paper, we propose ANMM(Access Network Mobility Management) to efficiently support micro-mobility in the IP-based wireless access network. The ANMM scheme can reduce the handoff latency and signaling overhead resulting in performance enhancement by managing the mobility of mobile nodes within access network.

  • In recent, the railway system consists of subsystems as rolling stock and infrastructures as signaling, telecommunication, power supply, overhead contact and platform screen door, etc. Furthermore, each subsystem has complicated interface so as not to understand these relationship. Consequently, to operate the railway system continuously with required safety and availability, the failure data should be corrected and analyzed systematically during operation. To achieve this object effectively, this paper presents the method which is evaluating the operational risk quantitatively using failure data, and selecting the critical equipment. Following this analysis, the improvement plan is established and applied to reduce the operational risk on system or equipment. From this study, the critical equipments of system could be determined and prioritized by risk analysis. Also, the effective maintenance to prevent critical failure could be implanted by this suggested methodology.

  • Even after the standardization of VVC completed in 2020, continuing efforts for developing even better video coding technology are still under way. In this context, the Joint Video Experts Group (JVET) is developing various video compression technologies under the name of enhanced compression beyond VVC capability which has reported BDBR gain of -6.75%, -14.05%, and -15.25% on its test model, ECM version 5.0, respectively in Y, Cb, and Cr channels by just having a few new or improved intra coding tools. The current activity has so far adopted 11 intra coding tools beyond VVC which can generate more sophisticated predictors, reduce signaling overhead, or combine various predictors. In this tutorial paper, we will review these techniques.

  • In this paper, we propose the extension of the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (TS) header for efficient adaptation of multi-layer coded video such as scalable video coding (SVC) and multiview video coding (MVC) in the HTTP streaming. First of all, the limit of the existing TS in terms of flexible adaptation of multi-layer video is investigated, and the signaling by extending TS header is proposed to provide efficient adaptation in a TS level. The proposed extension utilizes the private data field in the adaptation field of TS header to signal scalability and/or view information, which enable us to support diverse adaptation that suits underlying constraints of client capabilities, network conditions and user preferences. In short, the extension enables adaptation of scalable video with full scalability as well as view selection of multiview video in a TS level while keeping backward compatibility with the existing TS syntax/semantics. The performance of the proposed extension is compared with the existing adaptation using PID (packet ID) in terms of efficiency and complexity of adaptation. Furthermore, the increase of TS overhead caused by proposed extension is analyzed and an extension scheme to minimized the overhead is proposed.

  • In Hierarchical Mobile Ipv6 (HMIPv6) networks, the mobility anchor point (MAP) handles binding update (BU) procedures locally to reduce signaling overhead for mobility. However, as the number of mobile nodes (MNs) handled by the MAP increases, the MAP suffers from the overhead not only to handle signaling traffic but also to Process data tunneling traffic. Therefore, it is important to control the number of MNs serviced by the MAP, in order to mitigate the burden of the MAP. We propose an adaptive load control scheme, which consists of two sub-algorithms: threshold-based admission control algorithm and session-to-mobility ratio (SMR) based replacement algorithm. When the number of MNs at a MAP reaches to the full capacity, the MAP replaces an existing MN at the MAP, whose SMR is high, with an MN that just requests binding update. The replaced MN is redirected to its home agent. We analyze the proposed load control scheme using the .Markov chain model in terms of the new MN and the ongoing MN blocking probabilities. Numerical results indicate that the above probabilities are lowered significantly compared to the threshold-based admission control alone.

  • 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is the progressing standardization of the narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) system to support massive devices for the Internet of Things (IoT) services. The NB-IoT system uses a coverage class technique to increase the performance of the NB-IoT system while serving massive devices in very wide coverage area. A moving device can change the coverage class according to the distance or the channel state between the base station and the moving device. However, in the conventional NB-IoT standard, the performance of the NB-IoT system degrades because the coverage class is changed based on the fixed criterion. This paper proposes the coverage class adaptation schemes to increase the performance of the NB-IoT system by dynamically change the coverage class according to the location or the channel state of the device. Simulation results show that the proposed coverage class adaptation scheme decreases both the signaling overhead and the PDCCH decoding error rate in comparison with the conventional coverage class adaptation scheme in the 3GPP standard.

  • OFDM is one of the promising modulation candidates for a fourth generation broadband mobile communication system because of its robustness against inter-symbol inteference(ISI). The OFDM transmission technique has the inherent flexibility to adapt the modulation scheme on each subcarrier according to the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR). In this paper, the adaptive modulation scheme of OFDM system is proposed in broadband mobile channel. The proposed algorithm allocates initially the number of bits in each subcarrier using the threshold SNR according to the target BER and controls the total number of target bits using the well-known algorithm of Chow et al. In addition, the subcarriers of the proposed algorithm are clustered in blocks, that the signalling overhead can be reduced for the bit allocation of subcarriers. For the simulated experiments, this paper presents an evaluation for the effects of target BER, the various numbers of subcarriers in the subband block, and Doppler frequency on the performance of adaptive OFDM in broadband mobile channel.

  • Recently, various proposals for supporting network mobility, which provides efficient Internet access when a network formed within a vehicle moves around as a unit, have emerged. The schemes in those proposals, though, manifest some major drawbacks with respect to scalability: If the number of mobile nodes within a mobile network is large, the handoff latency would increase greatly, causing communication disruption; Data delivery to a node within a nested mobile network nay suffer extremely inefficient pinball routing. We propose a scalable network mobility supporting mechanism named SNEMOS (Scalable NEtwork Mobility Support), which resolves the above two major problems of the existing schemes. The performance of SNEMOS is compared with the existing schemes through extensive simulations. The numerical results show that SNEMOS outperforms the existing schemes with respect to handoff latency hop counts of routing paths, packet delivery time, header overhead in data packets, and signaling overhead.
