  • In hierarchical mobile IPv6 networks, when an inter-domain handover occurs, mobile nodes suffer from excessive signaling traffic and long handover latency, resulting in possible disruption of ongoing connections. Further, the selection of MAP and its load status critically affect the overall system performance. Therefore, we propose a dynamic MAP selection scheme that seeks to distribute load among MAPs as well as reduces inter-domain handovers. Performance is evaluated from not only an analytic model of average signaling cost but also simulation. The analytical and simulation results show that our proposed scheme improves load distributedness and reduces inter-domain handovers and signaling cost compared to another existing IETF based approach.

  • In this paper, we investigate how to do resource allocation to guarantee a minimum user data rate at low signaling overhead in multi-cell orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) wireless systems. We devise dynamic resource allocation (DRA) algorithms that can minimize the QoS violation ratio (i.e., the ratio of the number of users who fail to get the requested data rate to the total number of users in the overall network). We assume an OFDMA system that allows dynamic control of frequency reuse factor (FRF) of each sub-carrier. The proposed DRA algorithms determine the FRFs of the sub-carriers and allocate them to the users adaptively based on inter-cell interference and load distribution. In order to reduce the signaling overhead, we adopt a hierarchical resource allocation architecture which divides the resource allocation decision into the inter-cell coordinator (ICC) and the base station (BS) levels. We limit the information available at the ICC only to the load of each cell, that is, the total number of sub-carriers required for supporting the data rate requirement of all the users. We then present the DRA with limited coordination (DRA-LC) algorithm where the ICC performs load-adaptive inter-cell resource allocation with the limited information while the BS performs intra-cell resource allocation with full information about its own cell. For performance comparison, we design a centralized algorithm called DRA with full coordination (DRA-FC). Simulation results reveal that the DRA-LC algorithm can perform close to the DRA-FC algorithm at very low signaling overhead. In addition, it turns out to improve the QoS performance of the cell-boundary users, and achieve a better fairness among neighboring cells under non-uniform load distribution.

  • Link-by-link and end-to-end signaling affect the probability of inefficient trunk seizure, the usage of backward signal features, post dialing delay, total signal information processing load, each differently. Considering the circumtances of the domestic public switched telephone network, we conclude that end-to-end signaling is better suited to the domestic network.

  • As the number of the mobile nodes (MNs) increases in the networks, the signaling traffic generated by mobility management for MNs will increase explosively, and such a phenomenon will probably affect overall network performance. In this paper, we propose a novel analytical approach using a continuous-time Markov chain model and hierarchical network model for the analysis on the signaling load of representative IPv6 mobility support Protocols such as Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) and Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6). According to these analytical modeling, this paper derives the various signaling costs, which are generated by an MN during its average domain residence time when MIPv6 and HMIPv6 are deployed under the same network architecture, respectively. In addition, based on these derived costs, we investigate the effects of various mobility/traffic-related parameters on the signaling costs generated by an MN under MIPv6 and HMIPv6. The analytical results show that as the average moving speed of an MN gets higher and the binding lifetime is set . to the larger value, and as its average packet arrival rate gets lower, the total signaling cost generated during its average domain residence time under HMIPv6 will get relatively lower than that under MIPv6, and that under the reverse conditions, the total signaling cost under MIPv6 will get relatively lower than that under HMIPv6.

  • The integrated core network architecture and various mobile subscriber behavior can result in a significant increase of signaling load inside the evolved packet core network proposed by 3GPP in Release 8. Consequently, an authentication signaling analysis can provide insights into reducing the authentication signaling loads and latency, satisfying the quality-of-experience. In this paper, we evaluate the signaling loads in the EPS architecture via analytical modeling based on the renewal process theory. The renewal process theory works well, irrespective of a specific random process (i.e. Poisson). This paper considers various subscribers patterns in terms of call arrival rate, mobility, subscriber's preference and operational policy. Numerical results are illustrated to show the interactions between the parameters and the performance metrics. The sensitivity of vertical handover performance and the effects of heavy-tail process are also discussed.

  • HMIPv6 draws lots of attentions in recent years for providing an efficient handover and reducing the signaling overhead. HMIPv6 employs MAP(Mobility Anchor Point) in order to minimize a signaling overhead and a local mobility management. MAP completes an efficient mobility management in HMIPv6 network environment with frequent handover. However, HMIPv6 causes load concentration at a paricular MAP and may have unnecessary latency between HN(Mobile Node) and CN(Correspondent Node) within the same network. A MAP may also disturb the route optimization in HMIPv6 network because all packets must be transmitted through a MAP. In this paper, we propose a scheme to optimize the route in HMIPv6 networks according to MAP load. We configure a threshold in order to support the better service into MAP domain. The packets do not pass through MAP and are directly transmitted to AR(Access Router) if the number of current MNs attached to the MAP exceed the desired threshold. We simulate the performance of the proposed scheme and compare with HMIPv6. Resultly, the proposed scheme reduces signaling costs and mitigates concentration of a paticular MAP as well.

  • Since the radio spectrum is limited, future wireless system will have micro cellular architecture in order to provide multimedia traffic services on personal communicatons network. The small coverage area of micro cellular systems results in frequent hadnoffs and location updates. We focuse on network load and terminal power due to frequent location updates and propose a location tracking scheme using embedded-pager PCS terminals. The proposed scheme is expected to minimize theconsumption of PCS terminal powr and improve the receiving rate of callee because of the power saving mechanism and the embedded-pager PCS terminal. This paper proposes signaling flows among the network elements for the proposed location tracking scheme. The signaling flows are accomodated to not only the existed network architectures but alsothe ATM backbone network arcitecture. To verify the signaling flows, we used petri-Net model. The resutls show that the signaling flows are suitable to our proposed location tracking scheme.

  • Network Mobility (NEMO) handles mobility of multiple nodes in an aggregate manner as a mobile network. The standard NEMO suffers from a number of limitations, such as inefficient routing and increased handoff latency. Most previous studies attempting to solve such problems have imposed an extra signaling load and/or modified the functionalities of the main entities. In this paper, we propose a more secure and lightweight route optimization (RO) mechanism based on exploiting the firewall in performing the RO services on behalf of the correspondent nodes (CNs). The proposed mechanism provides secure communications by making an authorized decision about the mobile router (MR) home of address, MR care of address, and the complete mobile network prefixes underneath the MR. In addition, it reduces the total signaling required for NEMO handoffs, especially when the number of mobile network nodes and/or CNs is increased. Moreover, our proposed mechanism can be easily deployed without modifying the mobility protocol stack of CNs. A thorough analytical model and network simulator (Ns-2) are used for evaluating the performance of the proposed mechanism compared with NEMO basic support protocol and state-of-the-art RO schemes. Numerical and simulation results demonstrate that our proposed mechanism outperforms other RO schemes in terms of handoff latency and total signaling load on wired and wireless links.

  • In this paper, we hve compare the performance of DAR(Dynamic Adaptive Routing) with that of FSR(Flooding Search Routing) to select an adequate routing protocol in circuit-switched networs. As a performance factor, we have considered call setup time, which is the key factor of performance evaluation in circuit switched networks. We have evaluated the performance of two methods in grid topology circuit-switched networks using a commn channel signaling scheme, as application examples. As results, FSR method shows better performance than DAR method under light traffic load, when the number of links by which call has passed increases, but DAR method represents better performance than FSR method under heavy traffic load or large networks because of redundant packets.
