Magnetic resonance imaging has been used in the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) primarily to define morphology and positional relationship of associating structures. This report examines signal intensity characteristics of the posterior attachment as they related to the severity of internal derangement. Fifty six joints in 35 patients with a history of TMJ dysfunction were imaged writ MR using $T_1$-weighted spin echo sequence. According to disk position, ability to reduction, and the presence of osteoarthritis, the joints were categorized into three groups. A group 1 was anterior disk displacement with reduction; a group 2 was anterior disk displacement without reduction; a group 3 was anterior disk displacement without reduction and condyle had osteoarthritic change. The control group was determined by the clinical absence of any signs or symptoms of current or past TMJ pain and dysfunction. Calculated the relative value of MR signal intensity in posterior attachment and disk to cerebral cortex of temporal lobe by means of computer program, we have compared them with each groups. The result showed statistically little significant difference of disk signal intensity among each groups. but, signal intensity from posterior attachment in group 2 and 3 were significantly(p<0.05) decreased than control group. this might reflect an fibrosis or hyalinization of posterior attachment, which was part of remodeling process that occurs in disk displacement without reduction. However, this study could not demonstrate histologic confirmation of the decreased signal intensity in the posterior attachment. So, further investigation could be needed to understand the association between them.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the relative signal intensity of TMJ retrodiscal tissue in T2-weighted MRI as diagnostic marker of temporomandibular disorder(TMD). 58 temporomandibular joints from 29 TMD patients (14 men & 15 women) were evaluated. The relative signal intensity of retrodiscal tissue in T2-weighted MRI was referenced to brain gray matter same size of the region of interest(ROI). The collected data was compared to disc positions (normal, anterior disc displacement with reduction, anterior disc displacement without reduction), the presence of joint effusion. The relative signal intensity of retrodiscal tissue was significantly increased when the disc was displaced without reduction. And the relative signal intensity of retrodiscal tissue was significantly increased when joint effusion was present. The results suggest that evaluating the relative signal intensity of TMJ retrodiscal tissue using a T2-weighted MRI is valuable as a non-invasive tool for diagnosing the procession of TMD.

The speech intelligibility is one of the most important factors in communication system. The speech intelligibility is related with speech to noise ratio. To enhance the speech to noise ratio, background noise reduction techniques are being developed. As a part of solution to noise reduction, this paper introduces directional microphone using beamforming method and speech filtering method. The directional microphone narrows the spatial range of processing signal into the direction of the target speech signal. The noise signal located in the same direction with speech still remains in the processing signal. To sort this mixed signal into speech and noise, as a following step, a speech-filtering method is applied to pick up only the speech signal from the processed signal. The speech filtering method is based on the characteristics of speech signal itself. The combined directional microphone and speech filtering method gives enhanced performance to speech intelligibility in communication system.

Windowing routines have as their purpose the reduction of the sidelobes of a spectral output of the FFT or DFT routines. Windowing routines accomplish this by forcing the beginning and end of any sequence to approach each other in value. Since they must work with any sequence they force the beginning and ending samples near zero. To make up for this reduction in power, windowing routines give extra weight to the values near the middle of the sequence. The difference between windows is the way in which they transition from the low weights near the edges to the higher weights neqr the middle of the sequence. Signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) can be determined by the ratio of the output noisy signal variance to the input noisy signal variance of a window. Standard deviation of noise is reduced by windowing. Thus, the windowing operation improved the SNR of the noisy signal. This paper shows a performance estimation of windowing on a single tone with added Gaussian noise and uniform noise.
Recently, mobile devices with touch display panel are widely used. Accuracy and reaction speed of touch signal are very important in touch devices. Therefore, we need to develop an effective algorithm to reduce touch noise quickly and accurately. This paper proposes a touch noise reduction algorithm using Kalman filtering in consideration of signal motion. First, a specific pre-emphasis processing is applied to an input signal so as to maximize the effect of Kalman filtering. In other words, a pure signal in the touch signal increases but noise in the touch signal decreases. Next, motion of the signal is detected. Motion estimation is performed only if motion is detected. If we detect motion by using the only neighborhood of the signal, we can reduce about 75% of the computation in comparison with examining the entire area. Finally, Kalman filtering using the previous state of current signal is performed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm suppresses touch noise sufficiently without degradation of the pure signal

In this paper, we present the design method of noise reduction circuit in telephonic system. The circuit consists of compressor, expander and a filter. The basic idea of a proposed method compresses the audible signal in order to mask the channel noise during transmission and then expand at the reverse rate the transmitted signal to naturally recover the original signal. Of course, there should be no distortion or other degradation of the audio itself in passing through companding(compress/expand) cycle. In the compressing process, the gain of compressor is automatically controlled by the envelope level of input signal in order to increase the effective dynamic range of input signal and to improve the signal to noise ratio. The compressed rate is the root time of a audible signal. The compressed signal should be expanded at the square time of the signal to recover a original signal. Simulation shows the proposed method improves the performance of the noise reduction of a channel noise as well as stability.
In this study for relieving traffic congestion on the main arterial in Pusan using TSM Techniques, the travel system, roadway system and signal system analyses were dine. Through these above analyses, it was shown that the peak-time periods on the main arterial were shaped between 10 : 00 and 11 : 00 in the morning and between 15 : 00 and 16 : 00 in the afternoon for the business and shopping trips. Especially, there appeared to be about 23% reduction in the average delay when roadway system management including left-turn links increased were done, about 29% reduction in the average delay when signal system management including the signal phases and timings readjusted were conducted, and about 48% reduction in average delay when roadway system and signal system management were taken into consideration simultaneously. Based upon these results, it was concluded that there might be considerably better results in the average delay if the progressive signal system analyses on the arterial were applied with the land and road widths balanced, the difference on the turning vehicles and mid-block volumes readjusted, and roadside parking traffic prohibited.

In this paper, four different types of pulsed eddy current(PEC) probe are designed and their performance of detecting wall thickness reduction is compared. By using the backward difference method in time and the finite element method in space, PEC signals from various thickness and materials are numerically calculated and three features of the signal are selected. Since PEC signals and features are obtained by various types and sizes of probe, the comparison is made through the normalized features which reflect the sensitivity of the feature to thickness reduction. The normalized features indicate that the shielded reflection probe provides the best sensitivity to wall thickness reduction for all three signal features. Results show that the best sensitivity to thickness reduction can be achieved by the peak value, but also suggest that the time to peak can be a good candidate because of its linear relationship with the thickness variation.
In this paper, we propose a residual echo and noise reduction scheme by using linear predictor for hands-free telephony applications. The proposed scheme whitens residual echo by the linear prediction during the non double-talk. But whitened residual echo signal still has speech characteristics. In this scheme, the whitened residual echo signal is more whitened by using the power of the linear prediction error signal and the linear predicted signal. After whitening process, near-end speech and ambient noise is present during double-talk but white noise will appear during non double-talk situation. By linearly predicting again the combined signal of the near-end speech and the whitened signal, the ambient noise is removed. Through computer simulation, it is shown that the proposed method performs well at the side of AIC (acoustic interference cancellation).
A noise reduction technique to reduce background noise in corrupted voice is proposed. The proposed method is based on linear prediction and takes advantages of periodicity of voiced speech. A voiced sound is regarded as a periodic stationary signal in short time interval. Therefore, the current voice signal is correlated with the voice signal delayed by a pitch period. A linear predictor can estimate only the current signal correlated with the delayed signal. Therefore, the enhanced voice can be obtained as output of the linear predictor. Simulation results show that the proposed method is able to reduce the background noise.
